- Richandler, on 12/30/2008, -3/+34"Motorcycles may deliver 70 mpg or more, but they can be 10 times more polluting per mile than passenger cars."
I have a hard time believing that. The logic used in the article source is that the more energy pulled out of the gas the more the emission. - Heywoodj, on 12/30/2008, -4/+30I get close to 50mpg and use my bike as my basic transport for close to 7 months a year I'm doing my part for the "green" thing (Thats not why I ride)
Do not pussify my bike. Especially with this fuzzy logic as a reason to try.
Diesel? good bye acceleration( that will get you dead)
Electric? stone silent (that will get you dead)
Come near my bike with a catalytic converter? (that will get you dead) - muckemuck, on 12/30/2008, -2/+20Some people just don't want anyone to have fun. Nevermind that motorcycles make up an insignificant percentage of pollution (the linked article about emissions admits this) - they still want to regulate a recreational industry out of existence. Two stroke dirt bikes are almost completely gone. Now they're going after any motorcycle that burns gas. Buncha sick bastards need to go climb a tree and stay there. .. ;)
- avsfan987, on 12/30/2008, -4/+21Seriously?
The environmental movement is turning to motorcycles now? This has got to be a ***** joke.
Here's an accurate estimation to what percentage of pollution motorcycles contribute to: .0000000001%
Now ***** off - gizm0duck, on 12/30/2008, -0/+16uhh... I don't know about other manufacturers, but all Harley models (touring and softail) with the exception of the Dyna family have a catalytic converter in the muffler.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 12/30/2008, -5/+19This is where I draw the line. The greeners need to let this one go. Bikes are already environmentally friendly. The greeners need to stop egging everyone's house, and start worrying about the big picture for once.
- FXNGLAS, on 12/30/2008, -1/+14I'll keep my 600RR, fuel efficient or not.
- FXNGLAS, on 12/30/2008, -1/+11I'll be sure to donate my nuts to your mouth if I'm ever killed.
- noderunner, on 12/30/2008, -3/+11>>Electric? stone silent (that will get you dead)
Are you referring to the long debunked myth that "loud pipes save lives"?
Sorry, but cars not checking their blind spots and cards not stopping in time at intersections are the primary culprits. - Pete1the1gamer, on 12/30/2008, -2/+9Me thinks malonetdi has never operated a motorcycle other than in a video game...
- vilago, on 12/30/2008, -1/+8most motorcycles built today have cats.
- tgui, on 12/30/2008, -4/+10"loud pipes save lives", silent?
Riddle me this, which direction do your pipes point? Out towards the back?
Hmmmm, that might explain why motorists still don't notice you. Loud pipes are a ***** excuse for weekend riders to show off their extensions. It pisses me off when I hear a bike tearing through downtown rattling windows and disrupting everyone, or better yet waking me up a night. I really REALLY love it when I have some Harley A-Hole with loud pipes tear by me in traffic, only to be noticed by me as he passes while only succeeding in making me wish that he gets clipped in the next intersection because my left ear is ringing.
Loud pipes are for the ignorant small dick types. - pdxa4, on 12/30/2008, -1/+7Neither does my truck and it still passes emissions tests.
- musntSurfatWork, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5I hope no one will ever have to!, Ride safe!
- duewydo, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6Green Bikes wont make much an impact on our environment, just piss off a lot of riders. We need to be focusing on cars and big rigs.
- frequentFlyer, on 12/30/2008, -3/+8You'll pry my 35mpg ZX-10R from my cold, dead fingers.
That didn't sound good. - MasterPat, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7I agree with Haywood here on this one. I ride too and all of his concerns are very valid points.
Diesel would not make a great MOTORCYCLE fuel because the engines are just not developed enough for moto use. Malonetdi makes mension of new diesels in cars. Diesel cars have had decades of tinkering and developments. I would think that a first gen diesel engine in a bike would not be such a great thing.
The silence factor is a huge deal on a motorcycle. I'm a huge fan of 'Loud Pipes Save Lives'. Motorcyclists have to ride like they are invisble. I have a sportbike and the exhaust is loud as can be above idle, and still it's like I don't exist on the street. You have to make yourself visible, not just visually but audidbly as well. An electirc engine doesn't output much (if any) noise. That's one less way to get noticed on the street, and would only lead to higher crash and or fatality rates for motorcyclists.
Just some factors to consider when trying to push green to everything under the sun. I would hate to ride an electric or diesel powered bike anytime soon. - FXNGLAS, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7Nobody will take away current bikes, but the government will eventually force manufacturers to reach unrealistic expectations with what they create, leaving the end buyer with an expensive (but not fun) creation known as a motorcycle.
And now, I'm going to bury you because I'm juvenile. - duewydo, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Torque doesn't mean acceleration. HP is closer associated to acceleration potential. Torque basically means that it will perform the same with a 100 pound load as it would with a 200 pound load. Bikes being light and usually not pulling much a load doesn't make it an ideal diesel platform. Not saying that it wouldn't work just not as ideal.
- AmnesiacJack, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7No motorcycle talk for another 3 months please, its much to cold for me to go riding out there and this only makes me want to try and brave the cold at 60mph.
- duewydo, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Did you RTFA? Bikes, not cars...
- oldhick, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6Hippies with dreads riding motorcycles?
- Xearis, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4wait...this article is bs.
- Cloned, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Why don't BMW riders wave back?
Because they're too busy being pompous and trying to figure out their GPS. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4+1 for 600rr owners!
- MarshyTheKid, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4So you're the ***** that leaves a cloud of black smoke in the intersection for a 5 minutes! :p
- amous, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5i will not even think to try it
- kinderwood, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Really? Because I'm looking out my window at my motorcycle's cat converter right now. Yamaha's entire lineup has cats. Even the R1.
- mcnees287, on 12/30/2008, -7/+11I love driving my F-350 around town without anyone else in the car.
I always try and see how fast i can get to the speed limit when accelerating. - spritom, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4The Honda VFR has been meeting the requirements for automobiles for years.
- SuperOmegaSlack, on 12/30/2008, -2/+6KTM is working on a pretty cool electric bike:
http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2008/10/ktm-pres ...
I think going electric is a good idea, electric engines would work great for racing because of their high torque. The only problem is power... current batteries suck. As soon as ultra capacitors replace current batteries, then I can see electric bikes becoming competitive... I hope - Slovenian6474, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4And i'm sure your car doesn't have anywhere near the acceleration or performance of your bike.
- frequentFlyer, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Kawis come in green.
- FXNGLAS, on 12/30/2008, -1/+4Motorcycles aren't very aerodynamic? I can't even think of something to say that will demean you in the proper manner.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -2/+5there was a video on digg a few months ago about an electric dirtbike vs a 2 stroker. it sucked.
there is no need to make our natural gas usage 100% gone. things like recreational use like this should be just fine. - one2gamble, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3that thing only gets 35mpg?
- mcquitty, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3My R1, FJR1300, CBR1000RR all have catalytic converters. Hmmm...
- PrintScrn12, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2However sports bikes are much more common for riders than equivalent sports cars are for cars.
- spritom, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2I think the instant torque of an engine from Tesla in a GSX-R frame would be a riot. It wouldn't be very useful though. Maybe fuel cells or other technology can change that. But for now, modern bikes are already efficient and clean. That "10-times" worse thing is for two-strokes and perhaps the Hyosungs or something.
- Slovenian6474, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2It all comes down to money.
FTA: "If Americans want really green bikes then they'll have to vote with their wallets, and the big manufacturers will then respond," he says.
I agree with that, although Americans don't care about green bikes. They care about inexpensive fun transportation which is exactly where the motorcycles are right now. Why would I want to pay extra for an electric motorcycle that gets 120mpg when i can get a gas one new for $6k that gets 50mpg and be able to tour across the country with it? I may not speak for the nation, but I only get truely interested in green products when they align with my interest in cost-savings. - mcquitty, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Mileage on many motorcycles is guaged by the right wrist.
On some rides, my tank will get me 150 miles. Others... significantly less, especially track days. - Cloned, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2I totalled my bike a couple months ago. I wish I could go at all.
- SuperOmegaSlack, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2That's why it's all about the power source... I used to ride in the desert and have done a few races, which are 200+ miles. I have been following ultra capacitors and the best part is that they can charge/discharge instantaneously and can last for over 10,000 cycles! You could ideally charge the bike as fast or faster than gas I believe. Produced on a nano scale, the battery can be paper thin or any shape, so the frame and plastic could be the battery. (Hopefully in about 5 or 10 years)
- AmnesiacJack, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2That sucks man, hope you came out ok. When something goes wrong with a bike it normally means disaster happened to the rider...
- PrintScrn12, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Many bikes have catalytic converters already.
- uptwolait, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Fuel injection is becoming more popular on bikes, and that will improve emissions quite a bit. Don't kill the industry with crazy legislation, just keep promoting advanced technology and things will continue to improve.
By the way, some BMW's have catalytic converters now. - Cloned, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Sport bikes (or at least inline-4s) generally get less mpg because all the power is up in the higher rpms, so it's not uncommon to be cruising around at 8k rpms, thus using more fuel.
Sure, you can cruise at lower rpms to save maybe 5 mpg, but doing so can be dangerous since you lose all your power to accelerate. - tgui, on 12/30/2008, -2/+4*****, angled out a couple degrees maybe. Mostly straight back. Show me evidence otherwise. All are pointed mostly straight back making me wonder what, if any, the relevance of your first comment.
You must be one of the types I'm commenting on. Not only have loud pipes been debunked a number of times, how about you show me proof that the majority of extra noise emitted from loud pipes makes it to cars ahead of you. Or for that matter are needed to alert cars to the side of you. I can hear any stock bike thats next to me just fine.
Remember, loud pipes are there to warn cars of your coming, not piss off the ones behind you. They only succeed in the latter.
Oh, and I'm glad you have no verbal comment, it would be kind of hard to convey a verbal comment on a forum huh? - rjey, on 12/30/2008, -0/+25 mpg is considered acceptable in the realm of semi trucks. Anything higher than that is just gravy to them.
- khaose, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2dugg down for the Vulcan 1500
