- LowHz, on 05/22/2009, -2/+41Even in 1929 it was better than NASCAR.
- robjohnston, on 05/21/2009, -0/+25agreed, older videos run at a different frame rate to our modern video, giving the impression things are happening faster than they are. However, yes, a chaved up renault clio would still get pwned
- cloudberries, on 05/22/2009, -0/+19In '29 mechanical handshaking devices were all the rage. Why, you were the laughing stock of the neighbourhood if your handshake was anything less than "vigorous" or "shoulder-loosening".
- GTC55, on 05/22/2009, -1/+18In 1929 it was better than F1 now!
- Regulator980, on 05/22/2009, -0/+14Sure that seems fast, but it doesn't come anywhere near the sense of speed your experience driving in one of these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf3cJRkeEqE - TalkingMuffin, on 05/21/2009, -2/+15It seems to me that this video is not being run at the proper speed. Examine the handshake at 0:43. Unless that guy has some sort of mechanical handshaking device attached to his arm, there's no way that's a realistic speed for this video.
(Not taking away the death-defyingness of it all, those mofos were crazy. Death awaited spectators and drivers alike at every point along the track in those days) - shadows88, on 05/22/2009, -0/+7Is anyone else annoyed by the phrase "after the jump"? There's NO jump, the article does not continue in another section or another page which is what the phrase is supposed to be used for. They might as well say "after this sentence".
- draggy73, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6credible but wrong. http://stason.org/TULARC/movies/production/2-5-1-3 ...
- pyro0, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6Commentary: ".. driver stopped for new tires and fuel and lost 5 minutes."
Epic. - ifruit, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6LOL, no Helmets.
- ryancawdor, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6Benny Hill music is missing from the first clip.
- zombiecarlin, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5Looking forward to Monaco, this has been an exciting season so far, here's hoping that continues.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5Dugg for bitter truth. Die Max Die.
- sebedard, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4the standart for silent film of the time was 16 Frames per second. this film is played at either 24 or 30 frames per second.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4I miss Senna.... In Monaco he was fastastic.
- somedudemanguy, on 05/22/2009, -2/+61929 was 70 years ago?
- Badfish2, on 05/22/2009, -2/+6he shoulda used a red shell
- sharkd, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4197.6 miles over 3h 56m 11s equals an average speed of approximately 48 mph for race winner William Grover-Williams, driving a Bugatti Type 35B.
(Bear in mind that the total time, includes stops for fuel.)
The fastest lap (2m 15.0s) was driven at an average speed of 52.69333333mph. - nilsalb, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4The GP is on Sunday!
- dodgejon, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Typical racing fan...having difficulty with counting....1929 would make it 80 years.
- xptical, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4While the films may be sped up (a common practice in early file to make action more dramatic), you can still look at the lap times and try to replicate those on a sim like GTR or Forza.
Their lap times are pretty decent... - ifruit, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Thanks for making me LOL Cloud.
- pstroll, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Thanks to Bernie and Max the 2010 Monaco GP will suck
- techdever, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3http://www72.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=(2009*1995+ ...
It's 70 - sharkd, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Ah, shifter carts... there's nothing like doing 65-70mph with your ass two inches above the asphalt.
- zombiecarlin, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3If I'm not mistaken this is where most F1 drivers get their start?
- NiftyG, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3It was 10 years ago.
- acklefutz, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I would agree but the video is broken.
Talk about mud flaps my girls got em. - DecoyQ, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Perhaps. Let's check http://www.wolframalpha.com/
- t4m5t3r, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2even thought this is not a fraction of the speed of current racers youv got to have some respect for these guys, after all they where racing in cars with all the safety features of a plank of wood with wheels!
- dsmx, on 05/21/2009, -2/+4Pfff this isn't that important the link just to the right of the vids though is
http://www.asylum.co.uk/2009/04/06/spinal-tap-anno ... - tava0002, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2If you like old racing like this check out the movie Grand Prix from 1966 with James Garner or Le Mans with Steve McQueen, the racing scenes are great.
- fafaforza, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1How can you honestly tell? Were you watching all 70 laps of it on T.V.? Did you attend them in person? Did you then make a direct comparison to today's race? The reality is that probably half the field would retire with mechanical difficulties, and you'd have a fight for the lead between two cars. Dunno about you, but I was on the edge of my seat up until the last corner of last season's Brazilian GP, watching Hamilton win it by the skin of his teeth in 5th.
Many people look at the days of yore with nostalgic glasses, and the past is held up in a light that doesn't reflect the reality. - Disgod, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2Speaking of the current Monaco GP, anybody else chuckle when Nico stopped in the P1 position at the end of practice. You could almost read his thoughts and desire to get P1. I hope either he or Hamilton gets pole.
- fafaforza, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I assume the tracks you're using would be the same layout as that in the old days, withI assume the tracks you're using would be the same layout as that in the old days, without many of the chicanes.out many of the chicanes. I also think the last chicane before the start-finish -- the whole complex after the short straight -- did not exist then. In the 60's it was instead a double 90-degree righthander.
- ajv205, on 05/24/2009, -0/+0Modern day race with enormous balls required: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVXc29ZgutI
- hollywoodphony, on 05/22/2009, -4/+2Pfft, my Civic could beat those guys.
