- slapded, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34remove the restrictor plate for big races, build a 10 mile track and let them go 300mph. done.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -13/+34I had hoped before coming here that I wouldn't see these types of comments, but I'm not surprised. If you don't bother to be open to learning what NASCAR is all about, then yes, it'd be pretty boring. Until then, don't waste your time on a comment page that clearly doesn't concern you.

THIS is a race.
Lets see a NASCAR driver do this. - Demagogue, on 10/11/2007, -16/+31All of you diggers who post on here hating NASCAR should just keep to themselves. You are all extremely ignorant and obviously don't know a single thing about racing. While NASCAR isn't my favorite series or even close I still respect it as a sport.

Actually, throw a fat little bastard in a nascar driving seat with the fire suit and everything....and he'd be guaranteed to probably lose about 10+ pounds in the course of a single race.
I think we may be on to something...
Defeat childhood obesity by having every NASCAR driver team up with a fat kid "copilot" - roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Good.
It may not be up to its best performance yet, but its proven itself a stable platform. No need forcing teams to develop 2 cars at once, or continue to develop the current car only to have it terminated at the end of the season. Not to mention the racing is much better with it.
The cars stay closer together, the new bumper design allows for a little more bumping without lifting someone's rear off of the ground. The side force generators have greatly reduced the ability to loosen up a car just by getting behind it...
All and all, a better race for the fans, and that's all that matters. (not to mention the front splitter just looks cool as hell). I can't wait to see it on a plate track, thats where it's true beauty will shine through. - timothdd, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20Is it just me or does it seem ironic that the "Car of Tomorrow" uses technology that is over 50 years old...carburetors, push rod engines...
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23Nascar is the new Apple on Digg. Those who love it are hardcore and defending it to the grave while those who hate it get a boner by making snide comments about what they know nothing about.

One thing you'll find is that alot of people that like Nascar, like the other motorsports too. F1 is lower on that list usually because of lack of competition.
However, I love Rally, I've been to some American events in the Shenendoa Mountains, and out in Colorado (all minor stuff). Its great skill and awesome driving, but I don't know if you can call it a race. A race, and this is just my opinion, involves cars racing each other. In rally, you're racing the track, and the clock. Indirectly, yes, you're competing with each other for the best time...but I don't know if that's really "racing" or just "competing".
Think of it in terms of this. If I say "race you to the mall!", you would assume I meant that we'll start at the same time and place, and race to the mall. If I said that, and you made it to the mall first, But I said, well, it took me 10 seconds less than you....did I win?
And it would be interesting to see a nascar driver to that. Nascar drivers know more about car control that most other racing series. You have a car that too heavy, too loose, and with too much torque at the rear when you stand on it, and unlike f1, you dont get traction control and abs....you drive as much with your foot as you do your hands, which is a big part of rally.. I would bet a nascar driver would fair well in rally, actually. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13basichuman...
Sounds exactly like an NFL or MLB game ...
Only instead of doing it when the cars go by, they do it on a hit, or a goof reception - dlm85, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I used to bash NASCAR a lot until I bought a steering wheel, foot pedals and a NASCAR Sim for my PC. After running several races against 42 other cars I realized how difficult it must be driving in a real race. Getting in to the pits during green flag racing with wrecking is a challenge. The racing sim is the game I own is the only game that will cause me to break a sweat.
There isn't much difference between the gear head and the computer geek. They just use different toys. What is the difference between getting the most out of your PC and getting the most out of your car? Not much, expect for a couple thousand pounds. The amount of tweaking you can do to the car in the sim is a geeks wet dream. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15I still dont get what the point of having manufactures are now, all the cars are still labeled as a specific model, but they are all the same exact shape. lame.
- doodlebumm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14"All of you diggers who post on here hating NASCAR should just keep to themselves."
If the title weren't so misleading, I'd agree. But it was misleading. "NASCAR" should have been in the title, so that all the haters could "steer" clear. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+19@ basichuman
So, you went to a race and just watched the fans? You could say the same exact thing about, baseball, football, and soccer fans too. (C'mon Jeter you can do it!!!) see, same thing. You obviously have never been to one. - aradorn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Racing in the rain for nascar is way to dangerous than it is for indy or f1 because of the cars. A stock car (remember NASCAR is the National Association of STOCK Car Auto Racing) weights twice as much as a F1 and Indy car and the tires on an indy/f1 car are probably twice as wide. This allows for more grip and better performance in these conditions. If you were travelling at 200 mph at Daytona in wet conditions you would more than likely slide right up the track and into the wall because the cars do not have the grip. (Hell they do this now in dry conditions)
They also do not have windshield wipers so if its raining how will they see? And instead of requiring everyone to have them they just red flag the race instead.
Oh and for those saying NASCAR is stupid because they go in circles all the time. I once heard Dale EarnhardtJr. say that he makes between 80 and 100 moves between turn 1 and turn 2 at Daytona. You have to realize these guys are going over 180 mph on most tracks and are within just a few inches of hitting each other while simultaneous passing or being passed by the cars around them. - Summader, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11@plaunie
Watkins Glen and Sonoma..... - brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19"To all the yuppie douches who bash nascar at every chance they get, go to a race and then come back and tell us what you think...."
I've been to a Nascar race. It was the most boring thing I've ever seen. Seriously, how can you think that watching cars doing nothing but making left turns is entertaining? - PhantomRogue, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11How do you figure that? It links directly to nascar.com, anyone who watches/reads about Nascar knows about the Car Of Tomorrow... Not sure how the Title could get any clearer.
- fireflash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Restrictor plates are only run in 4 races, on the super speedways of Daytona and Talladega. The reasoning behind the plates is simple. They have to restrict the air-flow in the carburetors to keep the speeds below 200mph. Once these cars go over 200 mph, they tend to take off, and it would be very bad for someone to wreak in one of these things doing over 200 mph, because they'd become airborne, and could end up anywhere. Yes, cars will still become airborne even at a non-restrictor plate race if the right conditions present themselves, but it's a rare event, and they don't stay up for very long. It's a safety thing for the drivers and the fans.
And for all you NASCAR bashers out there who still think all NASCAR fans are toothless beer-bellied rednecks, you really need to pull your heads out of your asses and take a look at the real world for a chance. I'm neither toothless, beer-bellied, and I'm from Michigan, so I'm also far from a "redneck". You'll find the same fan-base in every sport, from the rich well-to-do, to the toothless beer-bellied types. Just because the sport's origins are based in the south, and yes, there are a lot of redneck fans, doesn't immediately make all of us rednecks. It's like with any sport, if you don't understand it, then you won't like it. I'm not a fan of many of the 'ball' sports, because I don't understand them. I find watching them boring. Yet I enjoy what goes into a NASCAR race, and enjoy watching them make left turns all day. I personally believe that there is a lot more talented people in motorsports racing, than in any other sport. And I'm not just talking about the drivers. Look at the bigger picture. You've got engineers who build these cars, and the crews who work on them. The driver also has to be very talented, because I'm sure most of you would ***** your pants if you were going around a track at 180mph inches away from 30 other competitors. - wm2010russ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7timusca
then you should realize that the frontpage is a compilation of the top stories from every category- you are going to be reading stories from all sorts of topics that you normally wouldnt read. its how digg works. any more problems? - TJENN, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8The COT is a lot different than the regular stock car used in Nascar. The nose now has a area underneath the grill to channel the air. No longer does the front of the car depend on aero dynamics. Also, they now sport a wing instead of a spoiler. The COT is newer because it doesn't depend so much on aero dynamics. I don't quite think most teams have the COT down, but Hendrick Motorsports seems to know how to win using it.
Also, it seems I have to prove a point once again. Sighs...Nascar is a sport. Drivers have to have good upper body strength to be able to steer the car that's going close to 200MPH in turns that are banked 20-35 degrees. Not to mention that they have to be able to control the car when they do spin out or wreck. Also, those who don't consider Nascar a sport and that it is boring and blah blah blah, try climbing into a car wearing a fire suit, racing for 500 miles non-stop with the track temp close to 90 degrees and the inside of the car temp close to 150 degrees. You get no break except for the periodic 13 second pit stop. Contrary to popular belief, Nascar DOES to RIGHT. Tracks like Watkins Glen and Infenion Raceway allow drivers to turn LEFT and RIGHT. Another thing is Nascar isn't all "rednecks", "hillbillies", and republicans. Nascar has quite a few drivers and fans that don't listen to drunk country singers. They don't live on farms and ranches. They don't drive pick-up trucks. They live in the cities, drive cars, listen to hip hop, heavy metal, classic rock, pop, and alternative music. So to all those ignorant Diggers who felt like they needed to click on an article they know nothing about, leave stupid remarks, why don't you all do us mature and smart people a favor....go play in your sandbox. - Bhatch514, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9There should be alot of old Nascar cup cars for sale now for cheap since they can not compete in Bush or Nascar now....should make a great weekend car.
- brainjuice, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I agree, even motorcycle races continue when it rains.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7"I'd change my mind if all the tracks weren't the same."
That's like complaining about football because all the fields are the same :)
Most tracks are very different. The 'sameness' comes in the fact that most of them are generally circular. They are different distances around, different bank angles and approachs, different lentgsh of sections of the track. All these add up to the fact that you can't really race any track like any other and they have to be each approached differently. Like playing football on a field where one week the filed is 110 yards and the next it's only 75; it's sorta the same but a lot different - SecularG, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6IndyCar all the way baby!
- kibiz0r, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14It can be a sport, for all I care, but it seems like a large waste of fuel and something of a symbol of how little America cares about the environment...
I clicked on the link hoping that Car of Tomorrow meant better fuel consumption, but no. Just more entertaining for the sport.
Yes, you'll be dying from global warming while sitting in the stands, but at least you'll be able to see those cars continue going in a circle... - roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8"more crashes = all that NASCAR fans care about."
I dont even think the word "ignorant" does you justice. I just cant come up with one that does. - TrueXtremeIcon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I suppose Chevy has to be good at -something-.
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9My views on Nascar have nothing to do with being stoopid, a yuppie, or ignorant to cars or racing. Rally racing, Le Mans, and just about every form of European racing is much more entertaining and enjoyable if you really are a car/racing enthusiast. So please save the "you don't understand!" and "go to a race, you'll see" B.S.
I have relatives who work for racing development companies who design parts for a number of cars that race in Nascar, they don't even really get into it. I have yet to have any Nascar fan actually explain succinctly what it is that they enjoy about the sport. Please, I'd be happy to get "pwned" on this one... - mlvassallo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It doesn't fly?
Tomorrow sucks. - basichuman, on 10/11/2007, -15/+19@Bowl
I've been to a Nascar race and it was exactly as I thought it would be, if not worse. Lots of drunk men (with shirts off) AND women that hold up their beers and shout at the cars as the go by. (C'mon Rusty you can do it!!!) Soooo much better in person. I have no desire to go back to another race. But hey, if you like that's all that matters. - btgoss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I am a Nascar fan, but F1 is bigger. Of course a good part of that is nationalism for a certain driver or manufacturer, but it is much bigger than Nascar. Both formulas are very strict, and Nascar is built to produce racing, while F1 is built to produce a technical demonstration, that being said... I would love to see Kimi in a dirt track sprint car. That would be awesome.
And as any fan knows, the best racing is the local stuff, at the local track. - brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Ummmm.....ever hear of Marketing?
Lots of people eat at McDonald's, too. That doesn't mean their food tastes better. - HarveyBar, on 10/11/2007, -14/+18Do people still watch NASCAR?
- Nedlog23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm a NASCAR fan, motorsports fan in general as I stated above.
The answer to your question is easy:
Marketing . . . . NASCAR has it almost perfected.
Also, high profile sponsorship accounts for fan base loyalties also. - zyl0x, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6This isn't grade school. Show your work.
- Namco, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They should call it the Car Of Hendrick.
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8F1 FTW.
- brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"That's like complaining about football because all the fields are the same :)"
Maybe that's why I don't enjoy football (both kinds), either. - petro62, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I have never bothered trying to defend NASCAR to people who don't like it. It is just one of those things that you enjoy or don't. NASCAR has lots of fault, but due to the way sponsorships and such for the sport work those faults will never be fixed(ie running a race for 5-6 hrs). I like watching rally races and a few other leagues, but the coverage is spotty here which makes it hard to keep up with. Either way I do feel it is unfair to consider all fans of NASCAR stupid beer drinking hicks who bow to George W. Bush(just a large majority).
Anyway about the COT. I think it was a smart move. They came up with the COT to help level the playing field and be safer and yet all they have done by adding it this year is spread the teams even further apart in competition. Too many teams don't have the resources of Hendrick,Rousch and so on to do the testing. My concern is if you slow down the race cars how long are these damn races going to last? They will still wreck each other so I don't see there be any less caution flags. Even as a fan I can not dedicate more than 3-4 on my weekend off to watch a damn race. I think NASCAR needs to look at how the truck series runs and use that for Nextel because the truck series is fast, rough, and fun. - MindTrigger, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7***** you. Go drop $1500 on the NASCAR Experience where you get to drive one of these ***** cars around the oval, and find out how "easy" it is. Once you've wiped the slobber from your mouth caused by the G's in the corners, remember that these guys are doing it with a bunch of other cars on the track, usually inches away, while watching / feeling the car's gauges and behavior and talking to their crew on the radio.
I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but I'm also no stranger to motorsports. I'm sure I've been in plenty of situations that would make yours asses pucker up into a singularity. After driving one of these cars and having tunnel vision on the road in front of me while do so, I gained a lot of respect for the drivers and the sport. It may seem like only "driving around in a circle", but until you've tried it yourself, sit down and shut the ***** up. - Sithlrd, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Roundtrack racing would be ok if they didn't make it so there were so many wrecks. Restrictor plates were put in to keep cars tightly bunched and "competitive", which makes more wrecks, which sells more tickets. Restrictor plate racing IS NOT racing, it's demolition derby. Anyone can turn left in traffic, bump into someone and cause a crash. Put these drivers in a real race and they'd be lost.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Except I never said there weren't all topics on the front page... you implied the other guy was a dumbass for being in the motorsports section of the site when all I was saying is that he may not have been in that part of the site.
- MindTrigger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I think the same thing when I see men of all ages ***** their pants over a football game a the local sports bar. How about you fat bastards go PLAY a sport instead of expressing your suppressed homosexual tendencies toward your favorite "wide receiver".
- Nedlog23, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Just for the record it is technically harder to set a car up for an oval race then a road course.
Road course racing usually means a symmetrical set-up.
Oval racing has different settings on all four corners of the car.
Take a look at sprints for example, ever notice the outside wheels are actually larger and sometimes wider than the inside tires? - Nedlog23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you think this is the worst article you've ever seen front page on digg, then take your digg diaper off because you must be new here.
- nncognito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3For the people with the tired argument of "Just making left hand turns going around in circles", I'm thinking there is more to it than that. Take Juan Pablo Montoya for example. He made the jump to NASCAR and he has really handed everybody their asses hasn't he? I mean, a high and mighty Formula 1 driver such as himself should have no problem with these backwards redneck technology bumper cars should he??? If he keeps getting into everybody he will fast replace Kyle Bush as the new officially licensed NASCAR whipping boy.
