Metallurgy, carbonfiber, engine thermodynamics... where to start....
With the exception of NASCAR there probably isn't one thing that your car hasn't been affected by motor sports.
- FunFactor100, on 05/10/2009, -2/+7Too bad some motor racing bodies hold back some technology....I can only imagine where rotary engines would be today if they hadn't been banned from so many racing bodies.
- pk386, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4Yea the Mazda 787 was BADDD a$$
- warriorscot, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4F1 has advances in different ways and most restrictions are fairly recent or not relevant to transferability of technology. There are also plenty of other motor sports where there are very few restrictions and the needs are different and more relevant to standard road vehicles.
- borez, on 05/10/2009, -2/+5Agreed, but I can't see that sitting to well on this site.
- gilbertj9, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3Wat? Perhaps the prius? I know the technology isn't identical but, anything that recovers kinetic energy from a car can only be good for fuel economy.
- disappointed, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3KERS has yet to prove itself. Only some F1 teams have it so they have to limit how much it can be used. If/when everyone has it, we'll see how much fuel it really saves.

Good luck seeing KERS anytime soon in your own car. - absolutzombie, on 05/10/2009, -2/+5Unless they come out with something totally pointless like KERS.
- warriorscot, on 05/10/2009, -1/+3Hard not to. At this point almost all of modern cars will have used either research or parts derived from racing. Lightweight engines are probably the most obvious.
- FunFactor100, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1A 2622 cc engine that puts out 700 hp....not too shabby! Now if only they'd let them keep competing so some serious development could be done.
- tehdriver, on 05/11/2009, -1/+2I wish I could only half dig you, KERS has a lot more potential than you might think. This year was optional for F1 with only a small amount of horsepower allowed. In the next few years that rate will be increased to where the added weight is a lot less of a disadvantage.
But yes, WRC is much > F1 - Entroper, on 05/16/2009, -1/+1KERS is just turning F1 cars into hybrid vehicles, which have been around for a decade now (Honda Insight was introduced in 2000).
- inactive, on 05/10/2009, -3/+3How about some real examples and proof instead of a BS promotional PR video. Point me to the research and specific items then I will believe you.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/10/2009, -2/+2Even the allegedly advanced series (F1) imposes rev limits, and doesn't allow AWD, dual-clutch transmissions or active aerodynamics, all of which are available on multiple street cars.
Sometimes racing advances cars, but right now, cost and speed controls in racing are the order of the day, while street cars advance toward easier driveability every year. - HappyScrappy, on 05/11/2009, -2/+2Sadly, there aren't.
There are no significant "anything goes" series right now.
3 of the 4 restrictions I listed are 10 years old or more. And I didn't even list differential braking (fiddle brakes or stability control) or "sucker cars". So I feel that your assertion that the restrictions are fairly recent is incorrect. - nVious, on 05/10/2009, -3/+2A trailer then a long buffering? Hahaha buryed.
- Greg2k, on 05/10/2009, -3/+2I can just see it now:
I'm happily driving my Mercedes Benz, minding my own business, and I get pulled over by an ugly old white-haired little ***** sat next to a Nazi BDSM fetishist. I get $100,000 taken from me and my driver's license revoked. The explanation given to me by these guys involves something about diffusers and flexible wings, letting this one guy overtake me and ***** like that.
Whilst this is happening I see this Ferrari doing donuts, speeding, pushing other cars off the road. These two just hand the driver a large wad of cash and request him to move along.
Yeah, let's hope some things remain exclusive to motorsport.
