- wupike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Hardly what I call "Hardcore".
I really think Honda missed the ball on this one. "Club Racer" means you intend on tracking it more so than a normal s2k... The CR has waaaaay too many things you wouldn't find in say a Exige Cup Car (another factory club sport model). Who needs cruise control on the track? - tarjan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16No, the stock vette actually actually does handle quite well, on and off the track (with left AND right turns).
At VIR that s2k will not hold a candle to a new base corvette, with equal level of drivers of course. Body roll is definitely more on the vette, but that just means that turn 5-6 and maybe at the oak tree the s2k could probably be an issue. The climbing esses would be in the vette's because of the increased power and grip with the wide tires. Of course that could be fixed by simply getting the z51 sway bars for 150 bucks and swapping them, but box stock it would still be faster.
In a skid pad I believe they will be equal, but it remains to be seen what those re070s do on that car. My guess is .89g.
Plus it would be quieter on the outside roads, and safer with a higher roof member if you flip it on the track. Those roll bars are short in the s2k, short enough that VIR and most tracks will require the full aluminum (but not structural) roof to be on when racing.
I get 28mpg highway btw. 17-20 in town. - dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And it has a ricer wing FROM THE FACTORY! Just great.
- strangeion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'll probably get dugg down, but I can't resist. Every so often I see messages asking you to sign a petition, "to get Acme Company to do gigawatt transcoding with their flux capacitor." Do you really think Honda cares about your petition? They might take a look at it and have a good laugh, but at the end of the day they're going to do what they want. But, everyone needs a cause so why not this one.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Go ride a bike
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ferrari will not allow you to put 22" DUB spinners on your Enzo. We do not want to be associated with the perception that model brings.
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I have been in both cars at Texas world speedway. The Vette is faster hands down. But don't let that stop you from digging down my comments.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7seriously...are you 5 years old?
- 1KrazyKorean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I dugg the article since its a S2000 and I have own 4 of them...But The wing and front lip is just hideous..
- copec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have seen S2000's competitive on Mazda Speedway against Corvettes. The S2000 seams to really come on with some modifications. It seams the fastest guys are running new suspension and maxing out the width of wheels and tires as well as some aerodynamic modifications. Even with those things price wise it is worth it to me. I love the feel of the S2000 and it seams it has a much better finish then the vette's interior. Vette's are very fast though...
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7People please dig this story down. As a former S2000 owner I can tell you this car is NOT a hardcore track car. Its got the same engine, and the car weighs 90 lbs less ONLY IF YOU LEAVE THE ROOF OFF.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This thing is damn ugly, especially the back. I actually like how the S2000s look, and I hate Hondas. This one just doesn't have it.
- Hilton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even More Pics and Features @ http://news.taume.com/World-Business/Auto/Honda-S2000-Club-Racer-848
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kind of missing the point. This S2000 is what the MAZDASPEED editions are to the Miata/Protege.
Some beefed up mods (the ones that tweakers are most likely to do anyway), but still a sweet everyday driver too. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14I'm not a fan of the S2000, but by 'run circles', do you mean that the vette will beat it in a drag? cuz i'm pretty sure the s2000 will handle better than a ***** base-model vette.
"This story will never see the front page." ...really? that's where i found it! - wupike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ tarjan
Of course the 400HP/400TQ $45K base vette will beat a 237HP/162TQ $34k base s2k at VIR... you can't deny the power advantage, especially with a front straight that VIR has. Put them on a tighter course where the vette can't stretch it's legs as much and it will be a much closer race. Either way, s2k's can't run at VIR without an aftermarket rollbar. period. Even w/ the OEM hardtop (which is what comes with the CR), they will not allow you to run. Sucks.
There's always Summit/BeaveRun - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He said 5'7"... not 6'7"
I'm 6'0" and fit in it fine. I'm sure that I would still be comfortable with another 3-4 inches of height.... not at 6'7 though. At 6'7" you will have trouble fitting into most cars... that is why my friend drives a Buick LeSabre. - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You obviously never attempted to fit in one. I am 6'2" and have no issues at all. There is plenty of space to even put a helmet on and go racing with the top up.
The fact that the car fits you snug does not mean it's small. If you're used to sliding around in an armchair of a F150, you're definitely not going to get that experience in an S2K. - mexmiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Subaru is better than Honda
- strangeion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And another person with a cause! A crusade against Honda you say? I agree with Youandwhosearmy, if you don't like the car then don't buy it. There's a lot of other alternatives out there to an S2000. Honda has to be doing something right because these cars sell like hotcakes at the dealerships.
- trip9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The s2000 is nice and everything but I would really like Honda to bring back the prelude. Make it v6 and rwd like the s2000 and I would be all over it.
- anj747, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Mugen S2000: http://www.mugen-power.com/street/s2000/index.html
- jsuther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gronkers is right about the littleness of the S2000. I've been shopping around for a roadster since last fall. Just put a deposit down on a Z4 3.0si. I'm only 5' 10" but with the S2000 I had to ***** my head way to the side to see stop lights with the top up or look over the windshield with the top down. Neither the Solistice or Z4 feel as cramped as the S2000.
- WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where the hell is a Type-R?
- wupike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at 5'10" and 205 I have zero problems sitting in or getting in/out of my S. Even tracking/autox top up w/ a helmet (and I have a big head too so that doesn't help,) I can fit inside w/o issue.
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is a disaster. Honda owners everywere are up in arms about how distasteful and tacky this model is shaping up to be.
We have started a petition to scrap the release.
http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=119&t=477773&st=0#entry10192085
http://www.petitiononline.com/NCS2KCR/petition.html - kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13I had an s2000 for two years. I drove it at Texas world speedway and many other Texas tracks. The Vette annihilates it. The off chance that this stupid story made the front page is a complete fluke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are exactly right. This is a Japanese car made for Japanese-sized people. I don't even know how it made it to the US/EU markets. Even the Miata has more room inside or (my first car) a 1981 RX7.
- jsuther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The modified Spoon version is better http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=7&article_id=5059
- wupike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ rworn
I'm a s2k owner ('03 Silverstone/Black) and Community Organizer on s2ki :)
IMO for the money and sole purpose of having a track-day s2000, I would pick up an AP1 and start stripping (I'll need the money for mods, right :p) with the right mods the s2k is a beast on the track (with or without the race weight treatment). - hpsmasher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I won't argue with a price comparison. The vettes are definitely more expensive, but still a lot faster. Dont get me wrong though, I love hondas. I have an SI (with no wings or stickers :)) and 600rr.
- alex4u2nv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually the new gen Honda seems to have a lot of influence from the American Honda Engineering dept. Have you seen the replacement for the NSX?
- rworne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wupika:
You got most of it. I'm an S2000 owner & S2KI member and was looking at what the CR had to offer. What we got was not what most of us wanted. In fact, it seems the majority of the S2KI community was panning the new CR.
The car has absolutely no performance upgrades to the power train. Most of the track time gains are gained by using a better set of tires. There's an improved suspension, tighter turning radius, and some stiffener bar added where the soft top was removed. The rest of it is all for looks - a factory body kit and some trim changes and the ability to delete the A/C from the base configuration. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahahahahahahahahahahaha
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you want to read the main thread on this model, hop over to S2ki
http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=471604&st=675 - semenski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0terribly disappointed.
- hondakit, on 12/24/2007, -0/+0http://technorati.com/blogs/hondakit.blogspot.com
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Vettes also cost at least 2x (3x for the Z06) than the S2K. There is no competition in the $30k price range.
- chuhsi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Supported. I've never been so sad about a honda before. At least I don't want to buy a new S2000
- TonyDramaWang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mmm thats sexy~
hope they bring it back~ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't digg this guy down. I'm 6' 7" and I can't even get into the car on the driver's side. The passenger side has my knees mashed into the dashboard and there's no way to make any more room since the seats are 'fixed' i.e. they don't slide backwards, only forwards, and even then it's maybe 3 inches.
Definitely not a tall man's car. - wily6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3HARDCORE!
- YouandWhoseArmy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4It's not like Honda is releasing this car and FORCING you to buy it. If you don't like it don't buy it. IMO it doesn't look that bad.
- digitalutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0still looks rice
- hpsmasher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I'm not a fan of the S2000, but by 'run circles', do you mean that the vette will beat it in a drag? cuz i'm pretty sure the s2000 will handle better than a ***** base-model vette."
Yeah right, anyone who has even glanced at the cover of a car magazine in the last 2 years knows that the new vettes (especially z06) pretty much own everything less than $200k. - gronkers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3BTW Americans prolly will not fit in the S2000.
not the fat problem, the height issue. if you are over 5'7" ferget it.
I could not even fit in one to drive it in an emergency, let alone with the top on.
I will stick with my 60/70s era Datsun roadsters. Plenty of room! - alex4u2nv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1no text (dig down)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I like the new S2000. I know a lot of people hate the bodykit but I actually like it. I think it's the color that makes it look ugly. Go to http://automobiles.honda.com/s2000/exterior-colors ... and you will see that it looks MUCH better in other colors.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm sure you do.
- RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Better yet... Why do strippers need to race on a track?
