- WNW3, on 05/24/2009, -1/+17I was trying to figure out why Danica Patrick was getting so much commentary. Even when she was in 10th all that the commentators talked about was her. At first I though it was the whole "She's a girl!" thing but considering there were other female drivers that they didn't talk about at all, that couldn't be it. Then I figured maybe she's going to do some crazy kick-ass driving but that REALLY wasn't it. I'm pretty sure she didn't make an actual pass during the entire race, gaining position only by fast pitstops and other people in front of her screwing up. Then it dawned on me. They were talking about her so much because she is in 90% of the ads they were running.
- rerato, on 05/24/2009, -0/+13Because it's another thing you are unable to do.
- JakeBC, on 05/24/2009, -3/+16I'm happy for him. It was nice to see so much genuine emotion at the end. Congrats Helio!
- superkeer, on 05/24/2009, -0/+11Kind of like 7 of the 17 IRL tracks are, also. Yes F1 is a superior class all around, but yes the Indycar drivers also race on those precious twisty-turny courses, too.
- Synergy65, on 05/24/2009, -1/+12Danica Patrick is hot.
- Pake, on 05/25/2009, -0/+9You can't compare F1 to the IRL, WRC, Le-Mans, or NASCAR. In fact, you honestly can't compare any of them to each other, because the vehicles are vastly different and require different skills to operate.
It's quite annoying to see people who know dick about racing act like they do, when majority of the time they don't even watch the sport they think is superior. - slicecom, on 05/24/2009, -1/+9Do you think you could avoid going to NEWS sites if you're trying to avoid NEWS?
- Maksx, on 05/24/2009, -1/+9when i read "the best finish by a woman", it felt hilariously sexist
- thecosmicpope, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7The Indy 500 has nothing to do with NASCAR.
- computershack, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6For people who watch WRC, Latvala won Rallye Sardinia today. He made many turns in both directions over a massive number of different changing road surfaces which both raised and fell with some dramatic jumps that had lots of random obstacles placed in the way, spending a great deal of the time exceeding the speed of the F1 pansies tootling around Monaco, despite being on a gravel course with large boulders hidden under the surface and rocks and trees inches from the car and with wildlife running across the stage.
- FreddieD, on 05/24/2009, -1/+7Rule #1 of a sports league is to showcase your most marketable people. NBA players were pissed at the Magic and Bird hype when they were rookies, until they found that those two vaulted the NBA into new heights.
- yevkasem, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6all jokes aside, this isn't a man's sport. that's just ignorant. if this had been football and she was a 350lb linebacker dominating, fine. but there's no physical/natural limitations to overcome here.
- omgukk, on 05/24/2009, -1/+6Don't call it a cell phone!!
- Jensaarai, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5I just got back from my first Indy 500. It was a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.
- lowe0, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4"If anything, she's giving up valuable pounds on her racecar by not being a guy and that actually gives her a bit of a competitive advantage."
IndyCars are weight-equalized (car+driver). Danica doesn't have much of an advantage due to her weight - the only real benefit she gets is that the team can place the ballast wherever they like on the car, as opposed to someone like Tony Kanaan who has to deal with his weight being wherever the seat is. - jc7012, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4DON'T CALL IT A PHONE, *****!
- DivineMonkey, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3It's the same here in F1, all the commentators talk about is Lewis ***** Hamilton. Even when he's dead last and having a sunday drive. The only consolation is that he is usually dead last these days =D
- tomj88, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3Apparently he has 2 fractured vertebrae, hoping Meira a speedy recovery.
- GARussell, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Low budget Panther finishes second again!
- computershack, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Get *****. WRC pisses all over F1. F1 is just a procession from start to finish with the only real overtaking being done mostly at pit-stops. At least in WRC, there's some spectacle to watch.
- Brentg7, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2There are only two sports bull fighting and auto racing. Everything else is just a game.
Ernest Miller Hemingway - FreddieD, on 05/24/2009, -1/+3Perhaps you haven't seen pictures of her in a bikini... to call those things A-cups would be generous. And that's after a typical professional photoshop job.
- WNW3, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2Yeah, in case you were wondering why you were getting buried it's probably because the guy in that car is now in the hospital. I'm not passing judgment, I'm just saying.
- inactive, on 05/24/2009, -2/+4I'm guessing the IRS is going to closely track his winnings this year.
- Jensaarai, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Except Monaco is as boring as it is prestigious. When you look back at the two most famous races there, one involves a driver desperately going off track to make the ONE pass of the race, and the other involves the second place driver, despite "showing the performance of the car" to be superior, was unable to pull off a pass on what it essentially a one lane track because the slower car could block him. I'd rather have exciting oval racing performance than a 2 hour pace lap.
- Metalaco, on 05/24/2009, -0/+2It was one of the best to watch!
- gdo01, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2@dafragsta
Actually her advantage has been negated since last year by the "Danica Rule" which mandates that the combined weight of the car and driver must exceed a certain amount. Last year, she was forced to carry around 35 pounds of dead weight in her car. - Brentg7, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Thank you (would digg you twice if I could)
- shrontzy, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Dugg for not using "Breaking" in the title.
- MacEnvy, on 05/24/2009, -2/+3That was amazing ... I can't believe they let him back out just seconds after the whole car was engulfed in flames.
'Course, he bit it later on anyway. Last I heard he's still in medical, complaining of severe lower back pain. Hope he's okay.
And for the record, WAY TO GO DANICA! - aviazn, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1The ballast is still a significant advantage--witness F1 drivers dropping upwards of 5 kilos in the offseason just to give the engineers more ballast to set the car up.
- chorizo1, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1I love BSG!!!! GO HELO!!!!!!!!!!! Ohhhhhhhh...HELIO, who the hell is that?
- lowe0, on 05/24/2009, -1/+2What an amazing race, but hopefully Vitor Meira's okay. Quite a hit they took.
- Vespa299, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Great job Helio, wins Pole, Pit stop challenge and the 500!!!
- o3man, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1What about MANica Patrick, I mean man-in-car.....
- Brentg7, on 05/25/2009, -0/+12 broken vertebrea
- hwood, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1I tried to watch it, but found the oval track much too boring to keep my attention.
- nbressette, on 05/25/2009, -1/+2You know morons like you used to say the same thing about open wheel racing in general... how often do you need to be proven wrong?
- jawni, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1She drove to a third place finish.....and then drove to the set of her next godaddy commercial
- denindallas, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Danica was running a very good race...very un-Danica-like. She had a legitimate run going and could have closed on Wheldon given another 10-15 laps. Helio was unstoppable towards the end. Wish Will Power wasn't screwed in the pits because he could have easily been #2 or #3 for sure.
- tpirfan28, on 05/24/2009, -3/+3Great race. Gotta say that Vitor Meira's pit fire + spectacular crash was something, though.
- inactive, on 09/04/2009, -1/+1Actually, there's at least one thing they have in common... Insurance providers and extended auto warranty companies - http://www.warrantywatch.org/ - are hesitant to cover their cars for obvious reasons .
- anixmander, on 05/28/2009, -0/+0Doubtful, she mentioned in after-race interviews that her car was just not fast enough to overtake Wheldon.
- anixmander, on 05/28/2009, -0/+0Damned straight.
I'd Digg you up twice if I could too. - SRSco, on 05/24/2009, -3/+2I'm sorry Generation Y doesn't appreciate stuff like this. She's a woman in a man's sport who is doing very well. That's worth talking about.
- dafragsta, on 05/24/2009, -4/+3If anything, she's giving up valuable pounds on her racecar by not being a guy and that actually gives her a bit of a competitive advantage.
- SRSco, on 05/24/2009, -3/+2His GF is hotter than Danica.
- noizeuk, on 05/24/2009, -7/+4people will bury this because theyre afraid of motor sport which involves more than 2 corners.jkl
F1 is obviously miles ahead of this toshbollocks and is proven with the technology, professionalism and fitness of the drivers. - dmcbride, on 05/24/2009, -5/+2Because boobs make you drive slower...third place even against all odds. Fantastic job!
