- scoottie, on 11/15/2008, -0/+35"NASCAR driver David Gilliland accidentally crashed the car in the Arizona race."
good thing he didnt crash it on purpose - Kirschey, on 11/14/2008, -2/+37The irony is so clean here.
1.Don't spend tax payers money on racing.
2.The digital TV switch coming in 2009.
3.The effectiveness of the current administration. - Chairboy, on 11/15/2008, -2/+33They spent $350,000 of OUR money on that race car.
- piper999, on 11/14/2008, -4/+30They got their money's worth as far as I'm concered seeing as I would never watch a NASCAR race in a million years but yet I have read this article and heard their message.
- Khast, on 11/15/2008, -0/+24This vehicle complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following 2 conditions: (1) This vehicle may not cause harmful interference, and (2) This vehicle must accept any interference received including interference that may cause undesired operation.
I am guessing #2 happened.... - duggdowncatisad, on 11/15/2008, -2/+23wtf, $350k on a race car? No wonder they ran out of space on the national debt clock.
- JakeKreber, on 11/15/2008, -1/+22your tax dollars at work.
- wstrucke, on 11/15/2008, -0/+17... it's not "their" money, it's our tax money. completely inappropriate.
- kvgirard, on 11/15/2008, -0/+16it could be worse. like having the government give our tax dollars to organizations that dont function properly..........oh
- JakeKreber, on 11/15/2008, -1/+15Because we're computer geeks, not mechanics?
- zendegany, on 11/15/2008, -0/+12My vote is for # 3.
- System6, on 11/15/2008, -2/+11BWAAAAAAHA HA HA HA HA HA!
- Memitim, on 11/15/2008, -0/+8At least we finally got to see some of it go up in smoke in a more literal fashion than usual.
- davidsmero, on 11/15/2008, -2/+10"HA HA"
-nelson muntz - nicksorrells, on 11/14/2008, -1/+7I'm glad I was finally notified of an entity called the FCC though
- Pake, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5Think of it as the first bail out that didn't go to bonuses and vacation retreats. You might hate NASCAR, but a lot of people are employed in racing and at least that $350,000 went to a company actually using it for the purpose they were given it instead of paying for bonuses and vacation retreats.
- xcheats, on 11/15/2008, -1/+6Because its NASCAR and whenever someone sees NASCAR you have to make fun of it and explain why it isn't a sport and how everyone associated with NASCAR is a hillbilly or redneck.
(Proud NASCAR Fan) - geekwithsoul, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5"Glad no one got hurt."
-- that's how you know it wasn't Cheney - scoottie, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5no i am just saying the word accidentally is not needed. if he crashed on purpose then you say that, but a crash is always assumed to be accidental until otherwise said
- rolf, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4You'd think maybe the big three (ABC, NBC, CBS) would make their own time to advertise their programming won't work anymore soon for a crap load of viewers. You know, it being in their self-interest and all.
But no, spend government money on race cars on the absurd quest to spread the message. They freakin' control the airwaves! - iridesce, on 11/15/2008, -1/+5So, if I understand this, the federal government has $350 thousand dollars to spend on a car with DTV.com on it to, I assume, refer people who have 10 year old TVs to check a website ???
Again, the irony would make me laugh if the waste didn't make me cry ... - inactive, on 11/15/2008, -6/+9 The car isn't on fire. It's unburned fuel in the exhaust. Why are people on Digg so ignorant about simple automotive engineering?
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -9/+12This fire was started by a macbook in the passenger seat.
- defektiv, on 11/15/2008, -2/+5I bet Cheney staged this. I don't know why that should make any sense, I just don't like him.
Glad no one got hurt. - Wreckage, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Karma is a bitch
- BlatheringIdiot, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3You know- I DO watch NASCAR and was wondering why I had a hankering to buy a FCC product.
What do they make again? - Memitim, on 11/15/2008, -1/+4And a touchy NASCAR fan as well, apparently, since not a single thing that you said had anything to do with the ignorance of automotive engineering on the part of the average Digg user. Or were you just looking for the flimsiest possible excuse to post that drivel so you chose to respond to the very first post that posed any sort of question at all?
- mizatt, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Upon seeing the car burst into flames, the FCC chairman exclaimed BEEEEEP
- 0ffl1n3, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2That money was going to be spent on some form of advertising anyway, and obviously it worked as everyone who has viewed this story has now read about the DTV switch.
- defektiv, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2touche sir.
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2I guessing you've never watched a NASCAR event with the COT cars.
- thallium205, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2I do not have cable and have an TV's that require the converter. I ordered them off the internet for my self and my other family, wtf is your problem with that you douchebag?
- inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2It's call advertising, dumb ass. Have you never seen commercials talking about "the switch to digital?" Yeah, that costs money as well.
- duggdowncatisad, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2That's all true but it doesn't address the issue of why the federal government is spending money on race cars at all.
Troll. :) - punkcat, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1WTF, the FCC doesn't need to advertise.
its not a ***** consumer service people can go to.
like their logo on every damn ipod in the world isn't enough. - Chairboy, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1But why is it ok for my money to be forcibly taken from me (try opting out of your taxes some day) and given to others? Even if you make the 'government provides vital services in exchange for taxes' argument, what vital service did they perform by spending cash on racing?
Here's a question: If the government took a thousand dollars from you, then turned around and handed it over to me, would that be fair? I'd use it for groceries and stuff, just like the NASCAR folks.
I'm guessing that no, you wouldn't be ok with this. - geekwithsoul, on 11/15/2008, -2/+3Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
- MrViklund, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1ROFL
- Autodidaddict, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1geekwithsoul +1
- 0ffl1n3, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1And the National Guard, and either the Marines or the Air Force have also sponsored cars in the past.
- Abomonog, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2Umm. I am a mechanic and when we see fuel burning away in the exhaust we yell, "THAT FREAKING CAR IS ON FIRE!".
- zunipus, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Considering the consistent incompetence of the Executive Branch of the US federal government over the last 8 years, watch the mess about to be made with the $700 billion. No way would I want the Bush League mangling the US health care system. OMFG. Imagine if 'W' had gotten his way and f*cked over the social security system by dumping everyone's contributions in the 401Ks! Remember when 401Ks were supposed to MAKE you money instead of LOSE you money? Morons.
- Swellin, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1YES WE CAN!
- Th3Wh1teRabb1t, on 11/15/2008, -1/+24. ????
5. Profit!!! - TheOneTrueGod, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1off topic copy&paste-anger:
The FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, decided all by itself that radio and television were the only two parts of American life not protected by the free speech provisions of the First Amendment to the Constitution.
I'd like to repeat that because it sounds vaguely important: The FCC, an appointed body, not elected, answerable only to the President, decided on its own that radio and television were the only two parts of American life not protected by the free speech provisions of the First Amendment to the Constitution!
Why did they decide that? Because they got a letter from a reverend in Mississippi! A reverend Donald Wildman in Mississippi heard something on the radio that he didn't like...
Well reverend, did anyone ever tell you that there are two knobs on the radio? Two knobs on the radio! Of course, I'm sure the reverend isn't too comfortable with anything that has two knobs on it...
Well hey, reverend, there are two knobs on the radio! One of the turns the radio off, the other changes the station! Imagine that, reverend! You can actually change the station! It's called freedom of choice, and it's one of the principles this country was founded on! Look it up in the library, reverend, if you have any of them left when you've finished burning all the books!"
-George Carlin, What Am I Doing In New Jersey? (HBO, 1988) - inactive, on 11/15/2008, -0/+0Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Border Control, and probably a few others I cannot remember.
- AbsurdParadox, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1Neither of you guys have any clue what you're talking about, lol.
- CAMMMO, on 01/19/2009, -0/+0If this makes you mad, then have a seat, pull up google, and start looking into NASCAR for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard. And if you are still worked up, go further to research government tax funded military marketing spending in Xtreme Sports, NCAA basketball, high school football, music festivals, video games, the list goes seemingly on forever. If you want to skip a lot of the google research, then check out CAMMMO.org and get informed on why this country is in so much debt and why so many of our soldiers are finding their service experiences to be different than they had expected when they signed up.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1It could have never been taken from the taxpayers and used by people to buy food, water and clothing.
