- FattyCorpuscle, on 12/12/2008, -0/+20The first cut should have been Max.
- Greg2k, on 12/12/2008, -0/+20Formula 1 is to the automobile industry what the military is to practically everything else. This sport is all about spending a ***** of money trying to shave hundredths of a second off the competition, resulting in better engine performance, tire stability, driver safety for all of us. It is in everybody's interest for there to be an elite discipline of a specific industrial field, and Formula 1 is a great example.
Not only that, it's awesome to watch. I don't care what people say about it being watered down compared to many years ago; it's still the best in motorsport and all these pit strategies and so forth make it less predictable. - ShArKSe7eN, on 12/12/2008, -2/+20These changes are going to drive away factory teams and kill Formula 1 as we know it.
Seriously, what the hell is Max Mosley & the FIA thinking? - alexvalentine, on 12/12/2008, -1/+18F1 is going to hell. I'm a big fan, but that last 3 years of constant rule changes is driving me away. The current F1 leadership is completely incompetent. Max and Bernie are an embarrassment to the sport.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+14no more high-end nazi prostitutes for max mosley :(
- jackwk, on 12/12/2008, -0/+9Bring back the canceled Canadian Grand Prix! It was one of the few events that weren't in the middle of nowhere and people always filled the stands.
- IvesMozart, on 12/12/2008, -1/+10As I said before: "Wanna slash the costs? Fire those old farts from FIA and hire Jeremy Clarkson. He will kick ass"
- jrtf83, on 12/12/2008, -0/+9And everybody knows that the coolest kid in school is the punk rockers who don't give a ***** what everbody else is doing (WRC).
- TheAcidQueen, on 12/12/2008, -0/+8People like you make me sick.
- Racer20, on 12/12/2008, -0/+8F1 as it currently stands is unsustainable. In this economy, it's only a matter of time before Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, and Renault decide that their half BILLION a year could be better spent elsewhere.
However, a spec engine is a poor idea. A better idea would be to maintain some continuity in the rules from year to year so you aren't starting from scratch every season. As it stands, a lot of work, knowledge, and money goes right down the drain at the end of every season. Plus, you'd avoid what has happened to Honda and Renault recently, where they get some small aspect of their new car not quite right and they fall from being a front runner to being a back marker instantly. Each year's car should be an EVOLUTION from the last, not a whole new car. - mirot, on 12/12/2008, -0/+8quit limiting rules and reward innovation..
wouldn't it be amazing to see different technologies competing against each other? - DoubleTap84, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7Sounds a little extreme to me. After all those proposed cuts I think F1 is going to be taking a backseat to some other motorsport in terms of the leading edge of technical advancement.
- timothdd, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7can anyone else hear that? its colin chapman and enzo ferrari crying...
- SpeedyG, on 12/12/2008, -1/+8F1 is only lonely inside the United States. Pretty much the rest of the globe has no idea NASCAR exists. There are probably more overseas IndyCar fans than NASCAR fans.
Besides, NASCAR's ratings have been sliding for a while now. The buzz has worn off. - Greg2k, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7THIS CAR IS INCREDIBLY FAST!!! IT IS LITERALLY MOVING ALL OF MY ORGANS TOWARDS MY ARSE!!!
- buffalodan, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7I wouldn't call F1 lonely. Just because a spot isn't popular here doesn't mean it's lonely everywhere. Also, have you seen Hamilton's girlfriend. Not your typical lonely guy right there.
- inchrnt, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6F1 is slowly rule-changing its way to being a spec series. How long before F1 is turned into A1GP?
- haastyle, on 12/12/2008, -1/+7no refueling in 2010....wtf
- bigpun, on 12/12/2008, -1/+7This will be terrible for the sport. Honda have already pulled out of next seasons roster, and to be honest it's going to become less and less apealling to watch. Agreed it's no fun seeing the same people win over and over, but that's not an excuse to give a hand out to the lower ranking teams to help get them going (pun intended?)
- TheAcidQueen, on 12/12/2008, -3/+8Don't be so negative. Cutting costs is best for F1, hopefully when everybody stops worrying about money, they'll be more new private teams, and this certainly isn't the end of Honda. They've been in and out of F1 since the 60's.
Plus the banning of refuelling is single handedly going to make racing so much better. - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5your ass is contributing to global warming.
- pstroll, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5RIP F1
1980s saw the peak of engine technology and fuel blends (neutered by the FIA)
1990s saw the peak of aerodynamic design (neutered by the FIA)
2000s saw the peak of computer controlled driver assist (neutered by the FIA)
F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of racing tech, but really it is becoming just another compromised spec series. - watcht, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5F1's been dying/dead long before this.
- TheAcidQueen, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5Just look back at classic F1 before there was refuelling. The racing was alot better then, granted it's not all down to refuelling, but it's a certain element which made it better. I'm looking forward to lightning quick 3 second pit stops.
The thing that'll kill F1 is forced standadized engines, and cuts on horsepower. Hopefully KERS will keep the electricfags happy for a few decades. - mooninite, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4He would force teams to dump "flappy-paddle" gearboxes for sticks. :P
- BelatedHero, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4The whole pit stop strategy battle makes the sport more boring. Races are being won in the pits rather than on the track. Eliminating refueling, along with all of the new aero regulations, should help to bring more of the fighting to the track.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4That's correct. Series with "no rules" don't last long because companies can't afford to spend the money required to stay there.
See F1. See Can Am. See Trans Am. WRC isn't far behind. - disappointed, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4The stands would be full everywhere if the fans who turned up weren't charged $200 each for the privilege of using the F1 brand name.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Actually, NASCAR is having problems too.
I don't get this idea of the nobility of F1. Have you paid attention? The greatest driver in F1 ever decided he'd try to block the track during qualification in order to ensure other drivers wouldn't qualify ahead of him so he'd have a better chance of winning.
That's meatheaded *****. - Napiertt, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3A ban on refuelling? No pit stops? Personally I enjoy the pit stop strategizing. F1 is going to look a whole lot different next year. The championship will be up for grabs.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3that would be Super Bike. WRC is like the Rocket Club Kids.
- hiPpymIck, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3FTA
In the longer term, the FIA and FOTA are to study the possibility of an entirely new power train for 2013 based on energy efficiency.
The rules will be framed to ensure that research and development of such a power train would make a real contribution to energy-efficient road transport.
The FIA believe an enhanced Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) system is likely to be a very significant element of an energy-efficient power train in the future. - mhummel, on 12/12/2008, -0/+318k rpm limit? They may as well just switch to diesel while they're at.
- SpeedyG, on 12/12/2008, -2/+5These kinds of drastic cost-cutting changes are things that should have been in motion years ago.
Now they've waited for a marquee team's pullout to give them a sock in the eye, and they have no choice but to cut costs, and they don't have the luxury of evaluating the impact of changes on competition.
That said, as long as guys like Kimi, Alonso, and even Vettel still get vehicles with which to show off their magic, this will all melt away. - aviazn, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3They've tried that, in many series over the years, from IndyCar to F1 to Can-Am. In every case it ended when 1) the costs grew too high and the teams withdrew, or 2) as in F1, the drivers essentially unionized and demanded greater safety regulations. Unlimited rules lead to two things--more deaths, and higher costs. In today's world, those are no longer acceptable to the people involved.
- psykiv, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3NASCAR... The only sport people watch to see the contestants die or have their car blow up.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4F1 is not dying. Mosley is just killing it slowly with these stupid rules. They should just revert back to the pre 2000 rules and be done with it. Sure getting rid of aero is ok but engine and chassis standardisation is something completely oppose. Hell i will stop watching if those wankers force that idocracy through. Also blame Honda because of them Max has the power to pull off such a stunt. ***** you max and ***** you Honda.
- swordedge, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3rule limits often drive innovation.... how can we get more power with these limits...
- spritom, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3FTA: "No wind tunnel testing using models exceeding 60 per cent scale and speeds of 50 metres/sec to be used after 1 January 2009."
112mph wind tunnels...interesting. - aviazn, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3What about the 1970s? F1 essentially ran a spec engine (the Cosworth DFV) and no one complained--it certainly didn't stifle innovation in other areas (Tyrrell P34) or produce ugly cars. And as for F1 being the pinnacle of tech, in the next decade, it's poised to see the peak development of energy recapture systems, which is going to be one of the major revolutions in road car design.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3that would be the awesomest thing ever.
- disappointed, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3No, it wouldn't. That's not racing, that's just a tech demo. The car industry already has plenty of those.
- MrSkills, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3I think they should make them pedal-powered and remove 2 of the wheels.
- cassaffousth, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3May be they were thinking on what happened to Honda. Money doesn't grow on trees.
- lennyrrt, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Or at least cut back to only 1 at a time.
- bigpun, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Someone pays you to jerk off your dog? Or you mean you use the dog jizz to feed to your cats? Either way, meh
- MrSkills, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2You could argue that the great aerodynamic design in the 1990s was BECAUSE of the artificial limits on engine technology - teams are forced to be innovative when they cannot just throw cash at horsepower. Those limitations can actually be an important part of keeping the sport on the cutting edge, so long as they do not go too far.
- pgouy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2It sucks to be a F1 fan right now!
- Napiertt, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4Come on! Last season was the most exciting in quite some time.
- aviazn, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Meant to reply to mirot.
