- omgroffles, on 12/19/2007, -10/+147I'm sure he was safer going 122 than an Asian woman going 40
- zeromancer, on 12/19/2007, -6/+88122? i don't see why anyone cares? a stock accord can do 122. so he happened to be an F1 driver. in fact, i'd rather have him doing 122 around me than some punk ass 16 year old that just got his license (in his integra with green lights on the hood and a ridiculous body kit and a fart can on the back).
- jimbobaii, on 12/19/2007, -3/+55Police - who does he think he is like? Lewis bloody Hamilton? ... ohh.
- Altron21, on 12/19/2007, -1/+31he's having withdrawls in the off season...
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -13/+43So what? He was sitting on the motorway driving well within the car's limit and his ability.
Speeding doesn't kill its bad drivers that kill. - chris9902, on 12/19/2007, -4/+26Alonso? is that you again?
- d686, on 12/19/2007, -1/+21welcome to france. in the past when top gear has filmed ***** here, french cops usually pull up alongside and urge the guys to speed more.
- Pake, on 12/19/2007, -1/+20Ferrari better sign this cop to a multi year contract!
- ghm101, on 12/19/2007, -3/+21fairly common speed on Frances motorways
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+17yeah his car must have had british plates, usually the french police don't care.
- Tenoq, on 12/19/2007, -1/+17But only one month? Locally that would get you walking for 12 months, court appearance, $2000 fine and vehicle impounded. :p
- colonelbuckshot, on 12/19/2007, -0/+13Gilles Villeneuve used to get away with it by signing autographs for the Carabinieri.
- GeorgeStone2, on 12/19/2007, -2/+10Didn't he say on top gear that he does the speed limits?
Lol owned.
I don't care though.
He can do 122mph if he wants. - chris9902, on 12/19/2007, -3/+10His road license has nothing to do with his F1 career.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8he wasn't driving a stock car he was driving a $500,000 CLK from what i've seen. 122 is nothing with that combination.
- auxide, on 12/19/2007, -2/+8ever think of a career change?
- cawpin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6You're kidding, right?
- neeob, on 12/19/2007, -1/+7It happened in france, not in the usa...
- benguild, on 12/19/2007, -2/+8Win.
- AuburnTigers, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5shocking.
- cawpin, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6That actually happened to Tony Stewart, the Nascar driver. One of my buddies is his cousin and worked for him for a short time. It was around Indianapolis 500 time and he was pulling his camper through the streets of Speedway going a little too fast. He got pulled over and the cop said, "Who do you think you are, Tony Stewart?" He handed over his license, the cop looked at it and saw "Anthony Stewart" and sheepishly handed the license back and just said "Have a nice day."
- lazyeyesam, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6Not every country in the world has the same sterotypes. In Asia, i'm sure she'd be considered quite good!
- bjornski, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6He's getting the "Britney and Paris" treatment.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Kmi, Montoya and even Schumacher have been in the news for doing this in the past.
- aaarrrggghhh, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6You explode above 100mph in the states apparently. Just watch any yank 'driving' film, Gone in sixty seconds or Too Fast too *****, by the time your into 12th gear and you've hit the nitrous your pulling 90, amazing. Tossers. Oh and by the way, Yank cars suck donkey balls, all flash and no idea.
- rabidbob, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4It's true. I see plenty of drivers in France doing a lot faster than 120mph. As the poster above, I'm not going to jinx myself.
- MerryMortician, on 12/19/2007, -5/+9The thing that tripped me out was that the police gave him a ride back to the hotel. If that would have been you or me, we would have been tased, shackled and thrown in Guantanamo.
- Sogui, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5I dunno if its the time of the day, but the fact that the original comment is getting dugg up and the replies are getting buried says something about the attitude of diggers.
- Sogui, on 12/19/2007, -3/+7In terms of making mistakes, you're right... an F1 racer going 122 is probably less likely to make a mistake than a new driver going the speed limit.
However, what happens when that said bad driver makes a mistake and ends up dead because the F1 racer was going some ridiculous speed.
The bad driver may cause the accident, but the speeder makes sure that they both end up dead. - Grimdotdotdot, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5Wrong. You can't hold a racing license without a legal driving license.
- scorchedearth, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4I remember driving around in France and seeing people do 180 km/h on the highways regularly.
- mjPayne, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3That's Europe. Road are better and not too far away there is the Autobahn where 122 mph IS legal. I've driven 180 Kph (that around 115 mph) on the Autobahn and is no big deal. I don't claim to be great driver, there are lots of drivers driving at that speed.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4nascar: i don't see how driving around a banked oval requires skill, frankly, i can do it
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3F1 license and road license are a different thing.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3This innocent question was surely worth digging him down to Oblivion over.
- plingboot, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4I'm sure if this had happened in the UK the police would've let him off.
- i4ybrid, on 12/19/2007, -5/+8If anyone should be allowed to speed, it's F1 racers! Give him his license back, he can obviously drive!
- k0nz, on 12/19/2007, -3/+6He's not the Stig, they drive different lines in the Star in a reasonably price car challenge.
- kowalzki, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5Speed limit says nothing about safe speed.
When the conditions are fine you can go twice the speed limit and it's still safe. when the conditions are poor you sometimes have to go 1/10 of the speed limit and even that might be too fast.
Have you ever driven on ice, snow or gravel road? The speed limit won't help you there. Good judgment is what counts. - Pake, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3The potential for human error increases as the speed increases... So yes, speed is one of the deciding factors.
- KataLieb, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Of course not :)
I do what I love. Like in the Wild West - Its best to die with your biking shoes on! - demonstro, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2And what's wrong with a BMW Diesel?
- ivantalboys, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2They drove the same lines, Lewis is the only F1 driver to follow the same lines as the Stig so far and that is probably why he beat the other drivers.
- mmm_linux, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3weird, i can only get my accord to 120.
- jasz, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2what? like going 130mph on the florida turnpike? meh...
- TheDiceMan, on 12/19/2007, -2/+4riiiiiiiiiiiiight
- jtizzle, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3dugg up for fart can
- KataLieb, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3Yeah I know, and I dont like any of them any more..
When you bike everywhere you get to see Mr.Death up close enough times because of people like this. You dont appreciate it much after a while, I can assure you.
But hey, its a nihilist individualists world nowadays, right? - TheDiceMan, on 12/19/2007, -2/+4East Londoner - he's not above the law you idiot
- zbeast, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3Its not the driving error that will get you it's the quality of the roads..
I've driven my R1 at over 170mph on local freeways but only on the good sections.
hitting bad road sections at that speed will hurt the bike.. -
