I am glad to see the return to diesels to America... yes they burn oil but they get that great torquey feel with great mileage and now thanks to new innovations they are also very clean...

The French are going to take the fight right to Audi with the Peugeot 908. The Pug is another diesel powered car, a twin turbo 5.5 liter v12, closed cockpit (coupe).

They dominate almost every style of race entered (le mans, touring car, rally, etc). Even after stricter rules enforced because of their dominance, they still usually pull it off. Great drivers/team and great technology and cars.

- 13B1303, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Diesel is almost 15% more energy dense then gasoline. Not sure about the race fuel the other cars were running though. This weight reduction and minimized refueling is a huge advantage in endurance races like this.

I'm American. Most Americans I see that watch any racing event watch ***** Nascar. Their cars are carburated. F1, LeMans, et. al. are much more than going in circles over and over. And beyond that, they're not simply carburated big blocks. They try out new technology on them, pushing forward the auto industry. But Nascar adds nothing, it just makes dumb ass people who are susceptible to dumb ideas think "carburated is better than fuel injected." - bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They were winning before they shrunk the gas tank. The 10% reduction was supposed to make them take approx as many pit stops as all of the gassers. But you're right, that penalty actually works to their advantage in other ways.

They shouldn't burn oil, not if they're maintained. You shouldn't be burning more than about a half quart every 10,000 miles, at which point you need to change it anyway. To compare, my gasser, goes through about that much every 3,000 miles.
Modern TDIs like VW sells run a leaner mixture than older diesels. They'll only make a puff of black if you really lay on the accelerator. - bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Oops.. wrong reply... This is why digg needs a threading system.

The R10 exists because of the class regs, and nothing else. If you didn't have restrictions on the gas cars, no Diesel could compete on engine weight or size for a given power. - Harvey_Mushman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Audi may take their fancy technology elsewhere because of that small fuel tank and weight penalty. They are spending a ton to develop top-notch, LMP1 machines that are hobbled by the ALMS rules. ALMS is trying to manufacture a winner from the LMP2 Acuras and Porsches. Why have the LMP1 class at all then? I wouldn't blame Audi if they took the R10 back to Europe for good.

The most distinct and amazing thing about it is the sound. I was near the pit exit when it launched to race speed. All you hear is a high pitched whine and the car is gone before you realize what even happened. One of the coolest things I've ever seen and heard.

- essjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@30trip .. No one is saying its the answer, but as far as solutions go, its the best we've got. Consider this, my VW derived TDi (its a Seat actually, with a VW engine) gets around 50miles to the gallon (uk gallon). Compare this with a decent petrol which gets 40ish and the Prius which gets about 45. Now ignore all the adverts, I actually get 50+mpg where a prius, doing the trip I do would get closer to 30, probably less as its extra-urban. Electrics aren't there yet and hydrogen is a pipe dream (a very wise man one said that five miracles need to happen before hydrogen becomes a viable fuel source). I'd recommend doing your homework.
- antiundersteer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The smaller fuel tank on this car is to try and balance the difference between diesel and petrol motors. Per unit of fuel, diesel contains more energy than petrol.
In sportscar racing you can have a variety of engines to choose from, the rules that the ACO (the French governing body of Le Mans) makes to try and make all the engines more or less equal in potential. - bufmike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wanted to get a diesel last year, but new "the nanny state" york won't let you get a new diesel. - antiundersteer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The R10 is one of the coolest racecars I have seen in a while. Its also super quiet, mostly just some turbo noises.
While at Sebring for the night practice on Thursday I saw one of the sister cars get loose and nail a wall hard.
If you ever get a chance to check out the 12 hours of Sebring in person, its well worth it.
This was my fifth year attending.

Since the R10 does better mileage on the race track a 10% smaller gas tank is a huge advantage.

They did this before to Audi in the 80's when the quattro came out. It was the only all wheel drive cars on the circuit. They were finishing really well in normal races. When it rained, they came in first, second, and third every time. They banned all wheel drive.

- dakboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same thing happened to Dodge in NASCAR in the early '70s. Ford & Chevy couldn't keep up, so they got the rules changed to the point where Dodge only had 2 choices - build a new engine from scratch, or get out of NASCAR completely.
