- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -2/+23No substance? She recently won the 2008 Indy Japan 300, making her the first woman winner in an Indy race. If you can make money off spreading your legs AND winning races, why the hell wouldn't you?
- tortfeasor, on 05/24/2008, -1/+18This article is worthless without pics.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2008_swi ... - wh3873, on 05/24/2008, -1/+17I wish there was a way to reply to two comments at once but since I cant I'll just say it here. She drives INDY car not NASCAR.
- slstsang, on 05/24/2008, -0/+11Strategy is ALSO a part of the race, driving a faster car does not mean victory, it is a combo of good driving skill and team work.
- Eric3k, on 05/24/2008, -4/+13Indy car is NOT NASCAR. It's far more dangerous and the drivers are probably more talented. Only a few bother to bump someone who pisses them off. May possibly kill them and yourself. The talent pool is worldwide and not just quarter midgets like NASCAR. Granted that probably lowers the appeal as well.
Danica can drive. So can Sarah Fisher. Many of the boys have come and gone since these two. Sarah is an owner driver... very cool either for the boys or girls.
As for sex selling... male athletes have always had groupies. Plenty have used their good looks in ads as well.
I have lived in Indy my whole life or the area. I find the difference, as a racing fan, that Indy Car is much cooler than NASCAR. I would choose it over NASCAR if only one were to survive. Watching oversized, poor handling American sedans is like watching a Clydesdale horse race. And the format of having 3/4th of the races halted in the last 10 laps so the slowest horses can catch up at the end is just stupid. Well for me it is. Obviously not for the masses.
I am lucky living here in a way. With the Indy 500, the Brickyard 400, the defunct F1 race, The US National Drags and starting this year, formula motorcycle racing, I get the opportunity to see a lot of what is reserved for larger cities of the world. We have the equivalent of the Superbowl every year. Lots of celebrating, lots of celebrity. Lots of weird people from all over the world. Lots of good looking women. The best technology of the day. Racing is a lot of fun... maybe not on TV as much, but in person it beats going to the museum or seeing CATS. - Coffeedemon, on 05/24/2008, -0/+8Not sure... does it have something to do with the fact that this story isn't about Nascar at all?
- jeddyftb, on 05/24/2008, -2/+9What the hell is this and why is it on the front page and why is the description absolutely no help?
- Rabbittt, on 05/24/2008, -1/+8Don't blame Danica because racing fans are superficial idiots.. She's a damn good businesswoman..
- Sanis, on 05/24/2008, -2/+9Too long and too boring of an article. Hell, even the pics are boring.
- footodors, on 05/24/2008, -3/+10I don't get her appeal. She ain't that hot, seems kind of a snot and those big sunglasses she wears makes her look like some kind of alien bug like creature.
- mcquitty, on 05/24/2008, -0/+6Nascar? It's Indy.
- kidcodea, on 05/24/2008, -0/+6IRL actually... f1 test soon probably....
- netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -2/+7You really should research what race drivers endure, in all classes, including IRL where she races, not nascar.
again...
http://www.pafoa.org/forum/imagehosting/thum_62464 ... - netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Yep. I'm not even a Danica fan, and I agree to that.
- deanlowe, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Fuel management is part of the game.
- eliotmat, on 05/24/2008, -3/+8It's funny that she's mentioned in the same light as Tiger Woods and Mike Tyson. Mike and Tiger were both exceptionally gifted atheletes that dominated their sport.
When she stops running people over with her car and wins more races I'll take her more seriously. As for her being "the first woman to do " I don't give a flying *****. I give people credit based on accomplishments as a human being these days. - kh99, on 05/24/2008, -1/+5I don't see what that has to do with being taken seriously as a driver. She's got something that's worth money and she's cashing in on it. I don't blame her at all.
I think some people confuse the attention she gets with the idea that's she's a great driver - she's not, no one's really saying that. I think her record shows she's a good driver, through, so I wouldn't say "no substance". - netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4why in the hell would any chick agree to wearing this on a photo shoot....
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2008_swi ... - woody24, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3Too many words.
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3Being a couch potato requires no qualifications
- skribble, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3Because there is a learning curve between driving a sleek, aerodynamically designed, Indy/Formula 1 car, and a NASCAR (Comparing a rocket ship to a tank comes to mind). Montoya has won Races in both IRL/F1/ *and* NASCAR. Tony Stewart is a Former IRL driver who doesn't suck at NASCAR. Hornish and Franchitti (aka. Mr Ashley Judd) are in their first year in NASCAR and will come along.
Keep in mind when NASCAR Drivers switch they don't do so hot either (Thinking a few years ago when Jeff Gordon tested a F1 car... Did ok, but wouldn't have been competitive in a F1 race at all even with a McLaren (which is what he was testing... it was Montoya's car at the time)... (The best is wen he used the breaks and almost hit his head on the steering wheel and was like... "Holy *****, NASCARs don't break like that").
Oh the reason they switch to NASCAR... Mostly for money, and some just for something different. - MOJIRA, on 05/24/2008, -2/+5She's so not good looking...
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2My grandmother
- jebudas, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2@Chewie67,
"Why does posing half-naked in a magazine make her any less of a Role Model?"
Because it makes a young woman believe that the only legitimate way to achieve fame and success is through selling her body. Seriously, are you just trying to justify your gawking at Miss Patrick or do you really not understand that? - hwy9nightkid, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2Yea, her Mom and Dad.
- netburnr, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3http://www.pafoa.org/forum/imagehosting/thum_62464 ...
- Kratos76, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Thank You Tort! I totally agree, I kept scrolling and scrolling and no pics.
- BDOUG, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2Lower back tattoo on a pretty woman. Blech.
- hottcarl, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2@Flair1 - There have been some drivers with crossover success - you forgetting Tony Stewart?
@Eric3k - I honestly think its difficult to compare the two in terms of skill. I love both series; they're just different styles of racing. We could just as easily say that IndyCar isn't as hard as F1, but I think thats a dumb assumption too. Just different styles of racing.
(Also, your comment on Jr, I don't think anyone would try and say he's the most talented in NASCAR; however, obviously Tony Stewart can race IndyCar, and I'm sure a handful of other drivers can too (Jeff Gordon coming first to mind) - inactive, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Somebody gets it.
- th3heretic, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Fail.
- gerriediaz, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2i figured there would be pics to back up this argument :(
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Paid endorsement from Depends?
- charlie55, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2right but it isnt enough to just be an ok driver. unless you are really really hot. but danica is just plain looking.
- hwy9nightkid, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2It's all about MotoGP in California!
- crossmr, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Race.. not races..she's won 1..in japan..
- deanlowe, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3And you qualified where??
- swordedge, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3the real question for danica's so called ability is can she mix it up with other front runners and win. Curt Calvin of the Indy Star says she will not win again this year. Average driver with great equipment.
And the worst part is that Janet Guthrie and Lynn St; James are guiding about 20 women through the system. Most are as good as or better drivers than Danica. But now they are asking if they have to take their cloths off to get a ride. The answer is NO. - mrsteveman1, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2I'm not complaining.....
- evodevo1, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Wait, you have to have athleticism to drive a car? Come on...maybe people should start exercising instead of complaining that Danica has a advantage because she weighs less.
- stone2020, on 05/25/2008, -1/+3Cause she won a fake race? Must have finished in the fake season top ten last year then too. Get over it. A female drives a race car. Maybe some day you can talk to a female
- brucealmighty, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1She gets attention mostly because she is so unusual....an attractive woman who enjoys and excels in an environment filled with speed, noise, danger and testosterone. It's not likely there will be many more like her. And BTW she was with Rahal for two seasons, not one and did fulfill her contract there. She had as much right to sign with a better equipped team as any other free agent in any other sport. Careers in the pros are short and you can't afford to waste any opportunities, on or off the field.
- Eric3k, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Who says they won't? They are good enough to race both plus F1... I would have to suspect that Dale Jr. couldn't race all three. I did say argueably more talented. Remember those all star races where they used Camaro's to pit drivers from different series to see who was "better"? They never used open wheeled cars because the stock car drivers couldn't run them..and probably wouldn't. For safety sake, as they just never laid hands on that type of car, they just wouldn't. A stock car was the lowest common denominator. I think the crossover to stock cars is the easiest transition as that has always been the flow rather than the way... even when Indy cars was more lucrative and NASCAR was new and totally a niche racing format. Now NASCAR makes more money. That means crossover to Indy will not be happening anytime soon. So I suppose it is sort of moot other than for the fun of the discussion.
- crossmr, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1I tend to agree. There seems to be a bit of a trend where any remotely famous girl willing to take a picture in something skimpy attracts huge attention when they're not really that good looking. There are far too many "hot" girls who end up digg who are really not that special in the first place and Danica doesn't even approach their level.
- randumbusername, on 05/24/2008, -1/+2i didn't like the pics but she definitely is bangable. she's got that dark-haired, sultry, "ill make you feel good" look that i like.
she look better on television. - hoopy22, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2She's hotter than most of you will ever get.
- xdevit, on 05/24/2008, -1/+2You do know that she qualified 5th and is in row 2 of tomorrows Indy 500.
http://www.indy500.com/grid - cgruber, on 05/24/2008, -2/+3butterface
- swordedge, on 05/24/2008, -1/+2has best equipment in the league
38 races to find the podium
40 to find second place
50 to find a win and that on fuel strategy alone
Average driver with top notch equipment. Most of the drivers in the league with that much money spent on them would have won long before 50 races. - kc23266, on 05/24/2008, -3/+4(yawn) wake me up when Danica actually dominates a race and really wins (/yawn)
