- exploresports, on 06/18/2008, -5/+51That's Richard Petty in the picture. NOT Jr.
- Ghurks, on 06/18/2008, -1/+42How many people will try this in the city, and wind up locking their steering column?
- jcaino, on 06/18/2008, -1/+24Also not to mention that when your motor is not running, it no longer creates vacuum - a key component that makes your power brakes work.
- cawpin, on 06/18/2008, -2/+16Hence, the "power brakes" part of his sentence.
- mcool119, on 06/18/2008, -2/+13It seems like doing that would be a great way to piss off everyone driving around you... Here in the suburbs, the speed limit is almost always 40 mph, and you better be going 40-50 or you're gonna piss some people off. It's basically unacceptable to drive 5 under the speed limit. People going 50, then coasting all the way down to 30mph, are seriously going to piss people off.
- byah, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11THAT just happened
- ozid, on 06/18/2008, -0/+10i think it would piss more people off when people lock up their steering wheels and crash into them.
- smotpoker, on 06/18/2008, -16/+25Dugg for helping illustrate benefits of ecofriendly techniques - though the fact I had to digg NASCAR too made a piece of me die inside.
I guess we all have to make sacrifices for the environment.. - aflaks, on 06/18/2008, -7/+16so you are saying that Dale Earnhardt Jnr was Eco friendly during that race? By which you mean instead of 500 gallons of fuel, he only used 499?
- betasp, on 06/18/2008, -3/+11Actually, he broke the rules and passed the pace car.
- Kanuhduh, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7Ah, The Magic Man and El Diablo. The greatest combination since Cocaine and waffles.

- angrycat, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6You can safely do P&G in a traffic using a manual transmission. Just keep the car in gear while coasting. The throttle body remains closed, hence no air entering the engine = no fuel being injected. If you're worried about stalling out, the ECU will force the injectors back on as the revs begin to approach idle speed, if your car is light enough you can feel a very slight surge in momentum as this happens.
- cawpin, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6People in Phoenix can't drive worth a ***** anyway. It won't make any difference.
- Chakat, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6Suburban avenues and boulevards, not residential streets.
- exploresports, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7So you're telling me he has the rights to a picture taken at least 15 years ago and found http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1229/1366627809_0a9 ... here?

If your going to try to insult something, be smarter than it. - insertAliasHere, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6"Taking the key out locks the column...not turning the engine off..."
Depends on the make. My chevy pickup locks the column when the key's in the off position. - roosterjm2k2, on 06/18/2008, -3/+8Taking the key out locks the column...not turning the engine off...
Its still a dumb thing to do, you do lose power steering, but as long as your moving, its not bad without PS ... but still...the wear on the stuff is too much, especially the starter...
Now, if you drive a stick...you can get by with popping the clutch in gear when you're still moving and avoid using the starter...but then you wear the clutch down AND slow yourself down a good bit, negating the desired efffect anyways... - diggitydoc, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5if you live in the US, then you know he is not talking about the standard suburban street lined with houses... he is obviously referring to the primary roads through many suburbs, not highways, but not residential streets either... the ones with lights instead of stop signs... maybe it is a secondary road.
secondly, screw your kids who don't stay out of the road...little johnny should never have chased that kickball into the street anyway. - gannondork, on 06/18/2008, -3/+8As if hybrid owners weren't annoying enough already now they will be pulsing and gliding and then mutually masturbating each other at their hippy love fests.
- WilliamDavis, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5FTA: "While it may seem counter intuitive, Earnhardt’s victory clearly shows that it’s a viable technique."
What kind of clown wrote this article? While it may be a viable technique, his victory clearly showed nothing. The technique is about gas mileage, not speed. - SoxFanNH, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4This is just another idiotic way to create more traffic. Just keep going the same speed and everything flows much better. These hypermilers are taking it a bit too far.
- N00F, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3In a modern, fuel injected car, just let off on the accelerator and the injectors no longer feed fuel to the engine. Simple as that. Once you are nearing a full stop, push the stick into neutral and then turn off the key. wait for the light to change, start and away you go. Fuel injected engines also don't use any significant extra fuel to restart a warm engine.
- lexington86, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3That was a pretty good race at MIS.
- vawksel, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3That was a really stupid joke, really, really stupid.
- drazen77, on 06/18/2008, -4/+7When will people realize that conservation is all well and good... but you can't escape the basic fact that we need energy for todays modern society.
It's quite ridiculous to expect to change the habits of 7 billion people on the planet. It simply isn't going to work. Rather than waste energy trying to "enlighten" people to be more concious of the energy we use, how about supplying the energy we need while at the same time looking to technology to fill in the shortfalls by constantly improving the efficiency in which energy is delivered and consumed? Oh dear god there is a novel thought. - therealkdog, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3And its the most annoying thing ever while driving.
I HATE when people slow down speed up repeat. - EffYoo, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Don't do it, I tried to drive like a nascar driver and my license is suspended until next October.
- strangewill, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Usually you keep enough of a vacuum for a few good strong brake presses, hopefully you're not doing this technique where you need to brake often.
- Sube6491, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3To keep your column from locking in most cars after you have shut off the engine, you have to put it back in the ON position (which is where it is when you're normally driving). Also, as long as you're not a frail little grandma, you don't need PS or power brakes, as long as you're above 5 MPH, the steering turns fairly easily, and the brakes just require more pressure to use.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 06/18/2008, -7/+9That P&G ***** will get you beat up. If you want to save fuel then ride a bike, ride the bus but do not subjugate the rest of us to your *****.
- mrzeero, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I was being sarcastic. I am sure it will just make it worse.
- antonio97b, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3It wont wear on the starter at all. If you're rolling you just have to put it in gear and release the clutch. Same technique of push starting a car when you STARTER FAILS.
- drewbudd, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I use P&G on my bike. It saves me money because I am using less food energy. Good thing for me, compared to the cars that drive around me, going between 20 mph and 10 mph doesn't matter to the cars around me that are going 35-45 mph. No matter what I am slow.
- ZenMojo, on 06/18/2008, -2/+4So, basically, "Gimme gimme gimme, I want it now" as a philosophy for living. How about a little personal responsibility?
- Jensaarai, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3Funny thing is, these techniques are so ancient in racing, that had you been watching NASCAR races all along, these ideas would have spread even faster.
So now, of course, the solution is simple. You must watch next week's race (It's at a road course, at least) for the greater good, to pick up more "tips." Heh. - inactive, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3Well, he didn't have much of a choice. Everyone was doing it - he just happened to be leading the race, directly behind the pace car.
- brad3378, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2There's a check valve between the engine and the vacuum reservoir to maintain vacuum if your engine stalls.
The next time you shut off your car, try pressing on the brake a few times and you'll see that you get a few vacuum assisted pumps of the pedal before your pedal goes hard. - vawksel, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Hybrid's automatically P&G already. The Prius engine shuts off all the time.
- elTito, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I think some of the hardcore hypermilers have looked at things like wear on the starter and found that it isn't significant. But consider the source I suppose.
- mllawso, on 06/19/2008, -1/+3Alts are fun.
- sq2shooter, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Hypermiling = I am a poor college student.
- mrzeero, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3I can't wait for everyone to start doing that on the freeways here in Phoenix.
- mcool119, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Most definitely.
- chenley1, on 06/18/2008, -4/+6Buried because the has absolutely NOTHING to do with being eco friendly and as exploresports said, it is the wrong picture! Damn hippies.
- acosta814, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2To get this straight, is this technique going to piss people off?
- Technoidatx, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2I posted :Oh for the love of Baby Jesus, and NASCAR why on Gods green earth would you use a picture of Richard Petty’s Car when reporting on Jr’s race.
