He then proceeded to blame the race organizers for it.

It was complete lucky who got to that and who didn't. Had the camera man not flagged down Roma, he would have went over and onto Saniz car and the rescue crew down there. Lucky to get away with it.
This entire event has been a farse anyway. 2 canceled stages, 1 death from a rider who was reported as finished when he wasn't, checkpoints which were not on the route plan. If the organisers insist on keeping it in South America then they have some major problems to sort. Sainz was not in the lead at this point, he had been passed (on the road, he was still far in the lead overall). The driver in front of him (in a BMW) avoided it, and Sainz did not.

- thecosmicpope, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Roma almost crashed at the same point and only didn't when a cameraman on top of the edge of the drop flagged him down and stopped him going over. 2 other cars later said it wasn't on the route map. It wasn't marked on the pace notes the co-drivers had. There was no way of knowing it was there. Since it was on an open part of the stage it was pot luck who found it and who didn't, and Sainz was the first car on the road.
