- mphree, on 11/21/2008, -3/+29That wing does look ridiculous. It's like one step forward and two steps back.
I used to love Formula One. I still watch the races and cheer Lewis Hamilton on, but I think the sport has lost a lot. It's not really a sport anymore. It used to be this big prize everyone went racing for and you only got paid if you won. Now, there's no real incentive to win, there's just an incentive to be in the top ten. I think Jeremy Clarkson's idea of paying everyone a living wage, then giving them a million pounds every time they pass someone would do a lot to fix the sport. - Number23, on 11/21/2008, -0/+25Well, at least slicks are back...
- RC212V, on 11/21/2008, -1/+17As butt ugly as the new aero package is, I will not be complaining if there is more passing next year. F1 is in desperate need of more overtaking because every dry race is determined either at the start or in the pits. I'll miss the sexy, swoopy lines of the cars with all of the wings and sculpted side pods but I'll be much happier if I see actual racing on a regular basis again.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14Sorry these cars look cheesier now more like an Indy Racing League car
- Awwzm, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10Hideous!
- tawnos, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9Awful. Is this for real?
- kalkin, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8@carnag3aus, so your obviously some sort of engineer with a background in aerodynamics
- rizzo2008, on 11/21/2008, -4/+11Why does it matter what it looks like? If it performs better or has to abide by new rules who cares
- Bayan44, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7The cars will NOT look like this. BMW is the only team that has tested the full width front aerofoil. Yes the high and slim rear spoiler is a bit of an eyesore and is here to stay for the 2009 season, but the front wings are yet to be portrayed. This article is very misleading.
- Bhatch514, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6You sir know nothing about what is going on in F1.
The wake from the larger wings cause the front to under steer on the car behind it, making overtaking near impossible on corner entry, unless you more then 15% faster in power to take them on corner exit. - RC212V, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6I disagree, there's plenty of incentive to win. Toyota has spent a couple BILLION dollars trying to score that first win and every team in the paddock desperately wants to win. And the problem is not that drivers don't want to overtake. The problem is that the dirty wake left by the cars current aero package prevents a car that's trying to pass from getting close enough to make a pass attempt. It takes either a mistake, banzai move, or a much faster car to pass someone in F1 right now. The only exception is when there is a rain race and everyone is going slower so downforce is less important and drivers are more prone to mistakes.
Clarkson has it all wrong. Drivers want to pass. It's just that the aerodynamics are making it extremely difficult to do so. - Swrv, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5The 1976 Tyrrell P34.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c ... - JoeyDeacon, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5The simplest and quickest way to improve f1 would be to remove re-fueling. Every since they introduced mid race refueling F1 has gone downhill in my opinion. A succession of short sprints with noone able to overtake . Fill the tank for the whole race and see the racing develop over the course of that race. For some strange reason Bernie thinks that watching cars stop in the pits is entertaining. I don't.
- theonlymerry, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5It also looks a lot better from the side. Will take some getting used to though!
http://images.gpupdate.net/large/115690.jpg - fmajowich, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5Wow, I see the worst design won.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I can't see Ferrari making something that ugly, there is nothing in the rules that say they have to make all the corners square.
- Tromoly, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I believe that the car shown above is the 2008 car with the 2009-spec rear wing and the 2009 front end, the '09 cars are wider than the '08 cars, that's why it looks so wierd.
- scarwars, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4always loved the 6 wheel Tyrrell P34
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GewFbY0zz8 - Tromoly, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4We need more Spa, Hockenheim (before they cut off the forest), Interlagos, Brands Hatch, etc.
- complexigon, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Been there, done that.
http://www.auto-sprint.com/asturias/images/Tyrrell ... - mmx2000, on 11/21/2008, -2/+6That would look a lot better if there were flames on the side.
- tonyhartfield, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I believe the new wing restrictions are aimed more at hampering the disadvantage cars previously suffered by driving in the "dirty air" caused by the aerodynamics of the car infront of them and slick tyres will also vastly improve grip.
The FIA are not as stupid as they can sometimes seem a rule change this radical would not be occurring if it wasn't going to be beneficial to the sport itself. - Teej, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3It doesn't look very good, but I'll wait to pass judgement until the first couple races of the season. If it's some of the most exciting racing we've seen in awhile due to more passing and racing, then all is forgiven. If not...rubbish and back to the drawing board.
- Stavrosian, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I'll settle for the uglier cars if it helps them achieve the objective of prettier races.
- Bhatch514, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3They need to reduce the multiple element on the wings!!!!
One element, as wide as the car, and make a max and min AOA, same with the front. The rest of the car is fine.
Thank god slicks are back - tonyhartfield, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/mysterio666 ...
- Crono, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Omg. What the hell did they do to the cars? That is dreadful.
- pdileepa, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3MadMax and Bernie the Crazy are destroying F1. Max with his 'my way or no way' attitude and Bernie with his craze for expensive, disney land like tracks (Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Valencia...).
- EnsErmac, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Man, the "crapwagons" in the IRL look better than that...
- Number23, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2The best looking GP car was Dan Gurney's 68 Eagle, everyone knows that.

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/pic.php?imagenum=2& ... - 3leggedHorse, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2It looks like a bastardized dragster rear wing.
- Teej, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Obviously you could just base it on how many positions are gained.
- pdileepa, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I agree.
- cassaffousth, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Is it me or the car looks longer than in 2008?
- aelias, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2The less downforce required, the more important the driver becomes. This season should be the best one yet, and last season was pretty amazing so I can't wait.
We will see some wicked passing this season since the cars aren't as aero-critical. Mechanical grip levels should be much higher. I bet the drivers love it.
If you think this is ugly, take a look at some of the atrocities of F1 history in the 70's and 80's. Yikes. - mooninite, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1AND FRIGGIN HD VIDEO. No more of this "lol sorry we're just testing HD for maximum profit" CRAP. Formula 1 is the MOST EXPENSIVE SPORT and they still do not have HD video service.
How can we impeach Maximillion and Bernie? - an0n1m0us, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Kudos to Mosley the freak for pushing green in F1, however these cars look absolutely horrible. They look like they've taken the design from the 1970s and plonked on the current livery.
Absolutely horrid. I will not be able to watch these things next year. I'll be too busy running to the toilet every 5 minutes to spew. - aviazn, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Is that a 68 or 67? I thought by 68 everyone was running rear wings, even in his USAC Eagle, by the looks of this site:
http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9086/Gurney-AA ...
I was hardcore into Grand Prix Legends when I was growing up... - redm0zzy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1These new wings don't just make the car look ugly, they are reducing performance as well. So your only half right I'm afraid.
- 3leggedHorse, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1What was wrong with last season, good racing, tight as you like title race.
Even teams like Torro Rosso won races, Renault won two or was it three.
It was not broke last season so why change it. - redm0zzy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1they will still be restricted by the regulations on the wing heights and size, so the car itself may look good but will still have the stupid wings
- redm0zzy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I really like the fact that slicks are back but not keen on the new wings at all. It would have been better if they had just band all the silly bolt-ons and left the wings as they were
- Drazzim12, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Green stripes? What about flames!
- mav16, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1It looks silly.
- Boofster, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Kinda look like go carts.
I'm going to hold off judgment on this one. - DoubleTap84, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I like this idea a lot as long as they do not end up shortening the races at all... there are way to many championship altering/ruining things that happen with the fuel nozzle. I am sure Felipe Masa would agree.
- Drazzim12, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Part of that is because they have removed all the complicated aero on the body to... make the sponsor's logos more apparent! Dammit, I want to see ***** ailerons on these things!
- pdileepa, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Ferrari 2009 F1 is going to look just as ugly. It's the regulations.
- rocor, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Everyone who follows Grand Prix racing has their opinion of the best looking cars ever. Mine is the early 60's with the best looking car of all time being the type 33 Lotus. They also have views regarding the worst looking Gran Prix cars of all time. My opinion : - this does not even come close to the monstrosities of the 1970,s.
