- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43you are an idiot.
and the care is breathtaking. - BinaryFragger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I guess you've never seen an Audi rally car?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_Quattro - jbzd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Looks like a gallardo + audi mated and this is its offspring. I guess it was to be expected when Audi teamed up with Lambo.
- thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The Audi Le Mans P1 R8 smoked everyone who tried to compete against it and now the R10 is doing the same. Audi knows automotive engineering. An amazing car that looks even better up close.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20one thing is for sure, this isn't your dad's Audi...
- Restlesstonight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"Audi and fast cars? Surely not."
????
Audi is the manufacturer of the strongest "normal" German cars at the moment (and the past few years).
Their Cars had a endless winning spree in Le Mans.
Take a seat in my brothers Audi RS6. 450 horse powers and 4x4 leaves a Porsche Turbo in the dust – plus, it's a 5 Seat avant.... stepping on the gas is like staring a fighter jet.
Believe me, Audi knows how to built Sports cars. - heythisismyname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Just cant wait until those classy ***** from MTV cribs throw on some chrome rims and spoilers to totally ruin this car.
- bultaco370, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15/sarcasm
Like any other supercar right? Gosh why do they even make Ferrari's or Bugatti's or Porsche's or what have you. Someone ought to tell these "car enthusiasts" to go buy a prius. - adidos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Audi has already proven itself...They have been rally racing cars since the early 80s. The quattro system is perfect.
And to whoever thinks an M3 is faster than an S4 should go watch the Top Gear episode where they race the two against each other... - ncdoyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The carbon fibre stripe doesn't really look that good at all, except maybe in black. It looks like a big silver blob on the gray model, for example.
That being said, the car does look pretty nice in person. You can tell what company owns Lamborghini. Be sure to look for the little R8 detail on the headlights... it's a great way to make yourself look like a car expert. - Zordok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8So, the fact that the R8 road car is named after Audi's race-dominating R8 Le Mans race car means nothing to you? The R8 race car is where they developed and proved the FSI technology that is in all current Audi street cars, including this R8.
- dcbebop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@CycloneNimrod
"Audi and fast cars? Surely not."
You do know Audi currently owns Lamborghini. Yeah, those are slow as balls. - adidos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The R8's layout, chassis, and transmission are based on the Gallardo.
The motor based off of the 4.2L that Audi has been recently stuff into the S4 (and also some A6's, all A8's, etc). - ncdoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here it is... the R8 monocle.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t154/ncdoyle/IMG_1606.jpg - GoldenGopher1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For that money, I would rather buy a Tesla Roadster. It looks just as cool in my opinion, has plenty of power for my needs, will still have the hotties checkin me out (cuz, lets face it, that is one of the main reasons anyone would buy a car like this), and is also much better for the environment.
- adidos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@jambox
"The engines are too far forwards"
Umm, the R8 is mid-engined... - RGT88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wrong Xwanger. This car handles terrifically well, 98% as good as the Porsche 911...its direct competition. R8 is also a pleasant place to be inside, with top notch interior material, its fit and finish are impeccable. Driving position is ideal even for taller people. I like to sit low, not as in having a ghetto cruiser reclined seat low, but race car low, that means when attacking the corners I'll have a better feel of what the car is doing, and not be thrown around on the seat. Oh and the way it sounds coming full throttle out of the corner...AMAZING! The turn in is sharp and quick, the mid corner damping also works well...imperfections do not unsettle this car, like they do Z06 for example. Even secondary (under 40mph) ride is superb, on par with Porsche.
This car is profitable, it will gain market share, and attract customers who otherwise would not consider an Audi product, or a Gallardo. R8 for most people will be a weekend toy, and hopefully during the week they will be attracted by Audi's other products such as the Q7 for the wife or A8 for the Sir.
There is also a hotter version in the works.
One question to VW though, what happened to Wolfgang Bernhard?! haha - jscro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Audi sold the RS6 here as a sedan 2002-2004 I believe. There only about 300 in the states.
The R8 is a beautiful car. - JeremyL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I saw one of these in Vegas. This thing is HOT!
- jbzd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"controlling productoin output" aka don't make too many like there Mercedes SLR and have to sell them way below MSRP.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was going to buy one of these; but I didn't hit the sell button, on my stock picks quickly enough, yesterday.
- flazz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Audi (VW) needs to prove itself with better quality control.
People who buy cars [in the market Audi is trying to get a bigger of share] don't want a moon roof that might leak, or limp mode to kickin for no reason, or their power windows to not roll down during their 3 year/26k mile lease.
Audi has styling, engineering, performance, fit and finish, but the quality control is so hit and miss.
not trying flamebait but sharing platforms with VW is just tacky. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I wouldn't say breathtaking, but it definitely looks fast.
- Henley24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looked nice in Detroit...

Sorry its a bit dark
I liked the gray carbon fiber on silver, but I don't know why they didn't go with black, it seemed like all of the Audis were the same silver paint at the show. - therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What is even more interesting at least to me is the article in the top left of this link, about Audi trying to gain a foothold in the US market. Being from the North East I see alot of Audi's and have a high appreciation for them as cars, and am thinking of an A4 as my possible next. If people are worried about reliability they should stop buying Mercs, they are horrible when it comes to reliability. Anyways stunning car, and a decent price as far as Super cars go, when compared to Ferrari, and Lambo.
- jcounterman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4looks like a lower powered bugatti veyron
but with a much nicer price tag - nevaseez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3$115k for 317 lbs of tourque??? WEAK
$20,000 subaru wrx sti has that much torque.. STOCK - pwagener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know, for that a bit less $$$ you could get a Tesla Roadster, the fully electric sports car currently ramping up to mass production. Faster than this Audi and many of its Lamborghini brethren:
http://www.teslamotors.com/
Ah, the joys of instant torque. - Restlesstonight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ senseigmg
no, I live in Germany... surprise!
Well... I don't know if its available in the states. I think they stop production for this one. German Wiki says that a new RS6 will be presented in Genf this year. It was a 4.2 litre V8 with twin turbochargers.
The original model:

This is/was a killing machine - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And by the way - the WRX Sti "starts" at $33,000. It does 0-60 in about 4.9s, the R8 does it in about 4.2s. The WRX Sti has a top speed of 160mph, the R8 187mph.
The WRX Sti is definitely more for the money, but the R8 outperforms it quite easily and makes it look fugly. - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Beautiful car. I'll stick with my much faster motorcycle though.
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So, is anyone here actually in the market for $115K car? I guess I could sell my house and live in it.
- corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if it was on digg or elsewhere, but i said that this next year is going to be interesting for the ~100k sports coupe market. Each have their own differences (engine placment, awd/fwd, etc) but here's the rundown.
Cadillac has the XLR-V (443 hp)
Lexus will have the LF-A (est 500 hp)
Infiniti will have the GT-R (aka Skyline, est 450 hp)
And then the regulars in the 100-150k price range like Porsche and Ferrari. - bankhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nice video of the R8 - http://www.motortrend.com/av/roadtests/112_0702_2008_audi_r8_overview/
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The WRX Sti looks like a cheap toy, too.
- alan93, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Hobo
91 million acres were returned to woodlands with the advent of the combustion engine. Did you read it? If you would like to argue your expert opinion with the Economics Professor at the university, (something ALGORE hasn't even done so watch out!) go right ahead.
Al Gore fed people a load of what comes out the tail pipes of bovines and people chewed it up, swallowed it , and said YUMMY!
Cool car, would love to upgrade from my current Audi. - jambox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well this looks nice!
Saw this today tho, if you're after a V8, how about a VXR8? About half the price, I think!
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/coming-soon/Detail.aspx?page=137 - trev0006, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Audi is coming out with a V10 version Audi R8.
http://www.dpccars.com/audi/audi.htm
http://www.dpccars.com/ - halavais, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is the headroom really that good? I never had any problem with Porsches, but couldn't get a comfortable seating position in the S4 (though I loved the car otherwise). Same head clearance in the A6. So unless they really dropped the seat (which I hope they did), I won't fit in this any more than I'd fit in the Gallardo.
- alan93, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3 the combustion engine IS saving the planet.
http://newsbusters.org/node/11081 - Tobo71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2For $115K, its interior looks just like any other Audi.
I'd take a Gallardo. - Ivazar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did Seal really make that many hit songs to be kickin' it with Audi? That damn Batman song and "Crazy?" Come on! And Heidi Klum to boot....shoot me now...
- jscro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Instead of spending so much money on developing these new cars and this "unique visual device", why don't they spend their money and developing some kind of viable alternative to the internal combustion engine so we can stop killing our planet?"
Because some of us still drive cars as a passion rather than just standard transportation. If I want to get downtown, I take the bus. If I want to have some fun, I hop in my car. There are plenty of people out there who drive for sport but are enviromentally concious at the same time. My car doesn't even get 20 mpg, but I also don't drive more than 8-10k miles a year. - hopsusa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This car is beautiful inside and out. They had one available at The Armory Show in NYC this past weekend along with the new TT. I got to sit inside and check out all the details... amazing!
The new V6 TT is a rocket as well by the way... don't let the engine stats fool you. What a rush! - philz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Restlesstonight
"I don't know if its available in the states"
If not, it's at least available by importers - look at the wikipedia picture you posted: It was shot in Connecticut. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich,_Connecticut) :-)
And yeah, the RS6 rock(s|ed)! - ncdoyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1henley24:
Heh... pictures of the same car. (Mine is from the NAIAS too).
I think that black carbon fibre on black paint would look pretty good... but I think the other combos just clash and look unbalanced, like a runaway piece of meaningless trim.
I saw a few new A5s last time I was in Ingolstadt... they look pretty hot! - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You are an idiot, did you know that?
Google it. S4 vs M5's. The S-line is amazing. Also check out the RS4,6,8... and the A8L, or the new S8 with the Lamborghini engine. Dangerous competition to the muscle cars in exotic conditions and obviously, they totally eclipse them in rally or nordic situations. Plus I welcome you to compare their fuel consumption to other popular brands -- you'll be surprised how good they do, despite being AWD !
I'm all for muscle cars... gimme a Mustang, Charger, Camaro anytime... but a twin-turbo 2001 S4?
Oh hell yeah, too. Audi is a very good brand... get your things together, dude... - slbyer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And the Tesla can spank the Audi on 0-60 time. Plus, it looks better.
- jambox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well Audi will spend most of it's cash on R&D, specifically trying to come up with more efficient engines.
This is a branding exercise - they'll make little or no profit on them, perhaps it's even a loss leader.
Car companies know that petrol prices are going to go up and up over the next 20 years - so nobody wants efficiency more than they do. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The new M3 isn't on any racetracks yet...
