- tucson27, on 03/26/2009, -1/+9The Aptera and other low-cost, commuter friendly electric car are the types of vehicles the USA should be investing in. Stop giving the money to the bloated, arthritic car companies like GM and get lighter, more efficient vehicles from new innovators on the road.
For all of you who think you need a tank to be safe on the highway, I say, "Get over it." You've been scared into buying something that gives you a false sense of security so someone can make a buck off your fear. - veganpa, on 03/26/2009, -0/+6Being a motorcycle, it doesn't qualify for a lot of the rebates, etc. :-(
But can go in the HOV lanes! - jcharak58, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7technically it is not a car.... it is a motorcycle. That is how they can get away with lower safety standards. I believe ZAP cars does the same thing
- skillit, on 03/26/2009, -1/+6It actually greatly exceed all safety standards. The body is a steel reinforced composite material with front crumple zones and internal steel roll cage. Using a composite material allows them to create the organic shapes which are best for aerodynamics. Currenly there is bill in the House that would add the Aptera and other vehicles like it to the plug-in rebate progam. Since its eclosed you don't have to wear a helmet nor do you have to have a motorcycle license. This is for the state of California, the only state they are currently planning to sell it in. After the initial launch of the Type 2 series they will be coming out with a four door, four wheel car which should be available nationwide. I have placed my deposit down for a Type 2 Hybrid and can't wait. With my driving habits I figure i'll have to buy 3 tanks of gas a year.
- jasdf, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5It is amazing that its drag coefficient is less than a bicycle!
The hummer's drag coefficient is just disgusting. - wh3873, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4I've been following this car for a couple of years, I just want to see it get released.
- jcharak58, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Actually concerns of safety were brought up..... Aptera is saying that is being built safe even though they don't have to.... just wait for safety tests

- Chilehead, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Appearances are deceiving in this case.
- jotux, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Does this mean you have to wear a helmet when you drive it?
I know that on active military bases any vehicle with three wheels is technically a motorcycle and I've heard of MPs giving tickets for not wearing helmet to people driving around in little three-wheeled buggies. I wonder if it's the same for this on civilian roads. - YesImAChick, on 03/26/2009, -1/+3I'm in line to get one of these, but the thought of getting into an accident with a 2 ton SUV scares the ***** out of me.
- ptsuk, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2They've been making these types of "cars" since the mid to late 70's, look up the sparrow car. Correct the are classified as Motocycles, just like SUV's are classified as "Light trucks", so they can get by a bunch of regulations and *****.
- DireWolf11, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2It isn't a motorcycle though. Look at the interior
http://digg.com/environment/3_Wheeled_Car_Gets_100 ...
Aptera gets screwed out of stimulus money even when it's clearly not a motorcycle. - LordBalderdash, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1i think it's cool as hell and certainly a step in the right direction, but it's probably very dangerous under less-than-ideal road conditions. how do they keep something this light from hydroplaning on wet roads?
- NiftyG, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Yes, but the reason they made it a three-wheeler was so they didn't have to spend money to crash test it -- because, technically, it's a motorcycle. Not getting extra stimulus money is the result of that decision.
It would be nice if there was stimulus money for electric motorcycles as well, though. - Humptydank, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2It looks like it has the crash test rating of a land mine.
- Chilehead, on 03/26/2009, -2/+3That's why we should ban 2 ton SUVs - there's really no good reason to have them anymore, and they are dangerous. Abrams tanks are very good at keeping their occupants safe in a collision, but we don't let people drive those all over the highways willy-nilly, so why should we keep giving inefficient SUVs free reign to do the same? In the future most stuff will be built like the aptera as the big-iron vehicles go the way of the dinosaur.
- NiftyG, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1If everyone drove smaller cars, it wouldn't be an issue.
- megaC126, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Actually motorcycles and electric vehicles do qualify for stimulus tax rebates...
• Vehicles eligible for the tax deduction are all on-road two and three wheeled vehicles weighing less than 8,500 pounds and is limited to the tax on up to $49,500 of the purchase price
• The deduction applies to vehicles purchased between February 17, 1009 - Dec. 31, 2009
• Only new on-road two- or three-wheeled motorcycles or scooters are eligible
• The tax deduction is for state or local sales or excise tax imposed on the purchase
• Single taxpayers with an adjusted gross income over $125,000 and married tax payers with an adjusted gross income over $250,000 are not eligible
• The law also includes a new 10 percent tax credit, up to $2,500 for motorcycles (two or three-wheeled vehicles) with electric motors manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads and highways purchased by December, 2011 - JDParshall, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Question is, would anybody buy it?
- nomojunkscience, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2yeah let's ban stuff! wooooot! freedom is so overrated
- ThinkBox, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Sweet car. I would feel like a Jetson in one of those!
- jtown, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1There is a weight limit to motorcycles. 1500 pounds in CA. If the production version of this vehicle is 1700 pounds, it cannot be a motorcycle (in CA) unless the law is changed.
- fountainbleau, on 03/27/2009, -0/+0Lightweght cars are long overdue: Transporting 1-2 tonnes of steel each way to the shops or work, stopping and starting, is unbelievably wasteful, and utterly unnecessary.
- wh3873, on 03/26/2009, -2/+1I've been following this car for a couple of years, I just want to see it get released.
- SneakyNinja, on 03/26/2009, -8/+1Look it's the sperm-mobile! Yeah... I can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
/sarcasm - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -10/+2Makes for a nice coffin too.
