- Norob112, on 09/28/2009, -0/+26Here is the rebuild in less than 24 hrs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzKfCIY_zfg
- borez, on 09/28/2009, -1/+13I love that mechanics face right at the end of the video ( very last shot ) after they bring in the new monocoque, he's just like... I ***** hate this job right now.
- borez, on 09/28/2009, -0/+10Probably?
They will have to. - Nephersir7, on 09/28/2009, -0/+9Do a barrel roll !!
- kent1146, on 09/28/2009, -0/+8At least they don't have to rebuild the driver from scratch. I am amazed that he walked away from that crash.
- JohnErickson44, on 09/28/2009, -0/+7Of course they're going to have to rebuild, not probably. lol
- roosterjm2k2, on 09/28/2009, -0/+6Completely wrong.
They use a "hoop" system similar to that of Formula 1 or IRL (or pretty much any other open wheel series)
A strong hoop is over the legs, another behind the head. If you draw a line from the top of one to the other, the driver's helmet is always under that line... so as the car rolls. it will be supported over his head so the helmet never hits the ground.
What it doesn't provide is intrusion protection, as has been demonstrated in Formula 1 and Formula GP this year with two bad accidents. - void, on 09/28/2009, -0/+5that's the driver
- wupike, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4The GT2 Porsche was leaving the pits just after turn 1. P1 cars are flat out though turn one ~140mph. Bad timing I guess. But to answer your question, how many laps do you think occur on a given day? 1? If so then yes, the P1 car would be much farther ahead... but there are these things called multiple laps and traffic.
- Thud, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4If you can call using 10% of the original parts a "rebuild."
But that's an amazing feat for sure. - Myztry, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4*prototype with enough spare parts available to be transported and assembled in less than 24 hours...
- borez, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4Oh really.
Lol... My bad. - HunterKiller, on 09/28/2009, -0/+3Some Clay bar will fix that back up...
- Jektal, on 09/28/2009, -0/+3Source? I find it hard to believe that ANY professional race car would lack a complete cage.
- ShArKSe7eN, on 09/28/2009, -1/+4One of the craziest things to happen all weekend! I saw Scott Sharp the next day at the Driver's Autograph Session, and he acted like nothing had happened. He said it happened so quick he wasn't sure what had happened until he got out of the car and saw the wreckage.
- crazymonkey, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Instead of being a dickhole, listen to the announcers say "Completely and utterly destroyed" in the clip. Obviously the poster failed to filter that.
That being said, it's possible to have only partial destruction. Some cars check out the walls at with a good head of steam and only destroy the font clip and maybe spin and destroy more body work. In that case, the entire car is not destroyed, just the body work. - Jektal, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2"prototype".
- roosterjm2k2, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Actually, you can argue logically for both sides.
In racing, a wreck will often destroy a car - making it unusable, while only damaging the front or rear clips. The car as it stands is destroyed, but not completely, as they can replace the area that is destroyed...
But you wouldn't want to argue the semantics of something like that - unless you're a dick. - R3publican, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Best comment here. (I mean the one above this, not this one)
- Myztry, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Even when a car dealer says they don't have a certain model of car in stock, they probably have at least 1 on the shelves in the spare parts department...
- Darrelc, on 09/28/2009, -1/+3what do you think them 2 blue/silver pods are there for? fun?
- diggit83, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2....you see though, sensationalism takes the place of proper writing....the bigger the adjectives, the better it sells!
- wupike, on 09/28/2009, -0/+22 wrecked prototypes in 2 years, he's happy he was even allowed to continue wearing the suit!
- hoffmann277, on 09/28/2009, -2/+4No before pics?
- jerrycan42, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1We all know that. It is just that some of us choose to be "totally silent" on the matter. My three year would tell you..."Smartie had a party and nobody came..."
- 92fsInox, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1An alcohol sponsored race car. Oh the irony.
- ginnipig, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1it's amazing how much safer the cars are now, it wasn't the worst crash I've seen but to just walk away from that is incredible.
- ABadPerson, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1That was a very successful practice crash, when is the real thing going to happen?
- zbeast, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Yes but Totally Distorted, was the state of that car. When you look at the wreck you don't think.
Oh my, that car was heavy damaged, or wow that car was Destroyed.
What you think is. "oh my god. that car got ***** up". But being that this is a article for a racing mag.
You can't really use that as a title for your story. So "Totally Distorted" works. - phqu88, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk316/jherbias/ ...
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1It was practice as well so people were probably entering and exiting the course often.
- NotSarcasm, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1I bet one of those other racers in the BMW or the Porche clipped him on purpose. They're jealous all they have is souped up factory cars and this guy is in a carbon fiber aerodynamic one-of-a-kind.
- phylum, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1that video was about to show them building a new one in the next 24 hrs time lapse but didn't show it, it was on the speed channel.
- EnderSaveUs, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Did someone get that Porsche's license plate? Sharp's insurance company is gonna have a hissy fit.
- crazymonkey, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1Wow - I can understand building one of these in a sanitized workshop somewhere, but I saw no one referencing paperwork (torque settings, pressure settings, etc). Flat out amazing!
While I'm sure all the top teams can perform this feat, it's simply amazing to watch.
P.S. - Who's the DB in the maroon shirt that just comes with his hands on his hips and adds pressure? Team owner? A few times he touches the car, but otherwise just looks like he's in the way. - 92fsInox, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1I dunno about other racing fans, but it struck me that an R4 type Le Mans car was racing along side an R1-2 type Porsche... Shouldn't the R4 be way further ahead?
- travishenrichs, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1I hope to never live in a world full of people like you and fullback. It'd be extremely boring. It was just a little hyperbole to liven up the post, not some technical description or literal translation.
- 92fsInox, on 09/28/2009, -1/+1word, you're right, I didn't take pitting into account. I also imagined the scenario on a much larger course than road atlanta, in which it would be nearly impossible for a an R1-2 in any class to catch an R4 in LMP1 in less than a couple laps.
- Fmunkey, on 09/28/2009, -5/+4http://images.google.com/images?q=acura+lmp1&o ...
- phqu88, on 09/28/2009, -3/+1Yeahhhh, there aint no roll cage on that bad boy...his head was straight exposed. That's absolutely insane...have fun putting it back together guys.
- DonutSlayer, on 09/28/2009, -7/+4They must have lost a serious amount of money due the crash.
And they probably have to rebuild the car from scratch. - fullback, on 09/28/2009, -9/+4It was "destroyed." It was neither "completely destroyed," nor "totally destroyed."
All destruction is total. There is no partial destruction.
