- centran, on 04/18/2009, -3/+214It doesn't inflate the tire. It just sets it but it is cool none the less.
- ibell63, on 04/18/2009, -1/+161The tire is off the rim at the beginning.
Then the guy sprays a flammable gas into the tire and rim area, then he ignites it causing the gasses to burn and expand rapidly, forcing the tire to take up more volume and eventually seal with enough pressure to hold it against the rim.
There isn't much pressure in there. Just enough to seal the tire against the rim so they can now fully inflate it with an air compressor or hand pump. You can't drive on that tire as is. - tortfeasor2009, on 04/18/2009, -4/+105Meh. The "blonde drivers" link in the sidebar was better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVV1qdsSydA&fea ...
- LeeMaple, on 04/18/2009, -1/+78Science!
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -6/+66Doesn't inflate it though does it? Just poppes it into the rim, no?
- tonynf89, on 04/18/2009, -4/+51It's just a useful way to seal the tire against the rim, or "set the bead."
It's not actually inflated, it just seems that way because of the hot air inside. You need to get an air compressor to fill the tire right away or else it'll come off the rim again. - inactive, on 04/19/2009, -0/+45This is how I put my pants on.
- D3koy, on 04/18/2009, -3/+39This was on Top gear I think. The race to the arctic episode I think...
Very cool then, just as cool now... - xtmno3, on 04/19/2009, -0/+29Holy damn, the one with the green car trying to back into a spot was hilarious. After 4 minutes, the guy who is stuck there waiting for her just parks it in one try.
- Vaiper, on 04/19/2009, -0/+26Great find! The ending was awesome!
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/18/2009, -6/+30Can someone explain what's going on in the vid?
- dhughes, on 04/19/2009, -2/+23 The Arctic isn't as cool as it used to be.
- skiier239, on 04/18/2009, -5/+25I think Top Gear did something similar to this when they did that Arctic Special thing
- KentdaLimp, on 04/19/2009, -1/+20Have had to do this a couple of times myself.
What the guy is spraying is most likely starter fluid (what I've always used) around the inside of the rim, then igniting it. The safer way to do it is to go around the inside of the tire once and them spray a heavy bead (spot) on the side of the tire and light that with a match/lighter. The vaporized fluid in the tire explodes and resets the tire on the bead. Instead of a heavy bead he just used his starter fluid to shoot a flame in there, similar to a match and can of hairspray flame thrower. Just don't put in too much starter fluid, (once around the rim is usually sufficient) or else things can get really exciting and quickly...
As started above it DOES NOT inflate the tire, only "sets the bead" so the tire can hold air. Basically your left with a tire with very little air pressure, and if you dont fill it up, it'll come off again. - Daxx22, on 04/19/2009, -0/+18May not have been all blondes, but all women!
- ProfessorStinky, on 04/19/2009, -0/+15Obligatory link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi9MOX-l7Gs - Chairboy, on 04/18/2009, -7/+21Just? That's a huge deal. Ain't no fix-a-flat or portable compressor that can set a bead, you need it in place before any of those work.
Note: He's not in a shop, so this is a life saver. It allows him to properly inflate it. - farfegnugen, on 04/19/2009, -0/+13Funny vid, but damn do I hate that song...
- GeekNurse, on 04/19/2009, -1/+14My car has solid rubber wheels so no flats EVER. Course, I drive a Model T.
- retral, on 04/18/2009, -2/+11The flammable gas is sprayed on the rim and sort of into the tire, then ignited.. this causes the gas inside the tire to expand and set the bead ('set' the tire to fit the rim so it can be inflated).
I think near the end of the video there's a guy that attaches an air tank to fill the tire the rest of the way. - LeeMaple, on 04/18/2009, -2/+11A guy that worked in our family truck stop did this, he blew the windows out in the front of the shop.
- xenuxenuts, on 04/19/2009, -0/+9nah, Jesus blew my tire.
- XedLos, on 04/19/2009, -0/+9The ol Perverted Nerd Equation
- zjbird, on 04/19/2009, -2/+11Did anyone else read this in Kaylee's voice from Firefly?
- w21irving, on 04/19/2009, -0/+7the last one actually is a blonde female driver.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rlcq6HBTiqw - langzaiguy, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6Nope, passenger and light truck tires don't have tubes. It's hit and miss with motorcycles.
- bradleyland, on 04/19/2009, -0/+6@Wheemer
I don't care how fast you get the valve stem screwed in, you still have to re-inflate the tire. This technique is used only to seat the bead. The problem with this method is that the temperature drops rapidly after the flame inside burns out, and the tire will appear to deflate... very quickly. If you don't A) *remove* the valve stem prior to ignition to allow the pressure to equalize, or B) quickly start inflating the tire with a compressor, your tire will deform and potentially unseat itself from the rim again.
I only know this because this practice used to be pretty common at truck stops for seating semi tires (which are notoriously difficult to get on the bead). My uncle has been driving trucks for 35 years. He's the one that originally showed me this trick with a lawn mower tire that I couldn't get to seat. - thePTS, on 04/19/2009, -0/+5***** you! Two of my brother's dad's friends died responding to a failed thread like this!
- jpop, on 04/19/2009, -0/+5Too bad he can't tell their hair color either... The majority (all?) of them were not blonde.
- mikemehak, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6working on farms and owning heavy equipment this is common practice.
But it's also very dangerous. I and many people have burned themselves badly doing this.
Even when being very careful this can blow up on you.
Tough tires you often need to wrap with a strap/chain. After setting the ether I've seen the straps/chains explode and send shrapnel everywhere.
The best way to do this properly is buy a bead blaster. It's faster, works more often and is much safer.

- ClevelandBrown, on 04/19/2009, -0/+4Kaylee (Jewel) is ***** hot.
- MikeyMoose, on 04/19/2009, -0/+4Watch closely - the tire comes off again...
- CamperBob, on 04/19/2009, -0/+4Ether? Can't stop and fix the flat here. This is bat country.
- j.carcinogen, on 04/18/2009, -1/+4Usually ether, or starting fluid, can be used because it creates a vacuum on the outside of the tubeless tire while air is being inflated through the valve stem in the rim, or wheel.
It is called 'setting the bead' and used a lot on '18 wheeler' or 'big rig' roadside tire service when a 'bead setter' (a device that blasts compressed air where the tire meets the rim while inflating through the valve stem) to get the tubeless tire to get enough PSI to make a seal on the rim. - ApolloXLII, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3are you serious???
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/blond - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -1/+4Thats not how to inflate a tire. Thats how to stretch a tire's bead on to the rim. You still have to inflate it once its on the rim
- Asianwaste, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3You'd never think you would ever put the terms "Redneck" and "Science" in the same train of thought.
- rotundo, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3yeah, many things are fairly simple once it's been thought of. however the chances of you thinking of it are still pretty low. it's a neat trick.
- phleef, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon ... H.S.T.
- skiier239, on 04/19/2009, -1/+3You can also get a rip of the episode at http://www.finalgear.com - along with all/most other Top Gear episodes
- bradleyland, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2That's not air going out, it's air going in. Once the flame burns out, the gasses inside cool rapidly and the tire will appear to deflate and actually deform and pull the bead off again if you leave the valve stem in.
- D3L3T3D, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2Yeah, but if you put a fire extinguisher nozzle in it, you can launch pop cans across a parking lot with it
- Tomholius, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2yea it was about 2 weeks ago too, I should start submitting videos from 2 weeks ago I might be the new mrbabyman
- DarkLance, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2what about locust attacks? If I remember, those early Ford's used un-vulcanized natural rubber tires. yum, tasty!
- bradleyland, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2That's correct, but seating a bead in the middle of the woods is next to impossible any other way.
- inactive, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2Three cheers for beadlock rims!
- jpop, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2The last one was funny, but I seem to remember that from some commercial way back when (so stunt driver).
- gnixon70, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2very old trick that otr drivers and repair techs have been doing for ages when they get in a bind. not very safe, but still kinda cool. now days they use a device that pushes highly compressed air around the bead while its being inflated.
- skiier239, on 04/19/2009, -1/+3Did you post at the exact same time as me? Sorry if it seemed like I copied your post or somethin :)
