- Shiftgood, on 11/29/2007, -5/+24There is plenty of negative comments about American cars and for good reason (you know what im talking about). But the one thing that American cars have that few others do is charisma and character. But, since about 1992... none of the big 3 have built a car with any resemblance of character.
Its good to see them getting back into the swing of things. - dezman2003, on 11/29/2007, -3/+21Just a little reminder to the econuts before they blow a gasket: You can own a car like this for some leisurely weekend driving without being a earth killing *****.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/29/2007, -4/+21WELL below? Its a shade more than 2000 dollars. Thats not very significant.
How much gas are you going to burn in that? I will admit it looks sweet though - they did a great job of retaining the old style.
Out of curiousity does anyone know how much cars of this sort have been affected by price increases over the years? If I was a high school senior back in 70 looking to get a Duster, Charger or an El Camino (this needs the challenger treatment)... would it be comparable to buying this or would it be like saving up for a Civic or an Echo? - maskedm564, on 11/29/2007, -2/+16Just don't tell Jeremy Clarkson. He'll bash it because its American and then compare it to a Jaguar coupe and then say the Jag is much much better, but it costs twice as much. He's done that crap before. On one of his newer DVDs he compared the BMW M5 to the Chrysler 300C SRT8. And said the BMW is much much better, but twice the price.
So what we've learned here is that a car that costs twice and is built by a company that makes luxury car is usually better than a car that costs half as much and wasn't primarily built for luxury.
Next up, does a fire that has gasoline poured on it burn more?
Don't get me wrong, I think Jeremy is fantastic when it comes to cars, but every now and then his reviews are a little biased when its American vs. European. - MikeDawg, on 11/29/2007, -3/+16Well below $40,000? I didn't know $2,000 was "well below"
- Weather, on 11/29/2007, -10/+22It's a Dodge.
- RizenBB, on 11/29/2007, -1/+1112,000, in 1986-1987.. inflation mean anything to you?
- su1man, on 11/29/2007, -1/+10$20,000 would be nice
- apec766, on 11/29/2007, -0/+8The Retro Style Mustang really brought back character to American cars and really made it definitely American. I do, however, see what you're saying. While I'm a huge fan of the C5 Vette, it hasn't had that American muscle feel on the outside. Though with the C6, it's getting better. It is good to see a big blocky modern-day American muscle car though.
- gherikill, on 11/29/2007, -2/+10Different kind of engine. Pushrod vs cam. Plus the American cars generate a lot more torque.
- heresy_fnord, on 11/29/2007, -1/+8Wow I'm impressed. A bit of news that has something to do with an automobile and it's not Jalopnik blogspam..
- Chirp08, on 11/29/2007, -0/+6he's was all over the z06, than at the end he ripped it a new one because it didn't ride like a BMW, apples to oranges jeremy, apples to oranges..
- shanomaq, on 11/29/2007, -2/+8lets hope this has independent suspensions on all 4 corners.
- RizenBB, on 11/29/2007, -1/+7Or maybe, this will allow younger people such as myself to afford cars that resemble Challengers, since so many of you middle-aged tools wrecked all the originals or are reselling them for $100,000 so they can sit in a garage?
- adamuffa, on 11/29/2007, -4/+10yes
- jftitan, on 11/29/2007, -1/+6a House? I wouldn't pay anything less than 50k for a house... anything less these days is a crap shack.
- RizenBB, on 11/29/2007, -1/+6Or it could be you know nothing of engine design.
American companies have always gone for larger displacement, as that equals more low end torque which has traditionally been what appeals to people. Larger displacement doesn't necessarily mean they are any less efficient, however. And there are plenty of American made engines that offer high HP/liter figures if that is what tickles your fancy - the SRT4 turbo engine, for example, and the upcoming turbocharged GM 4 cylinders in the new Cobalt. - RizenBB, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5GNs are amazing cars, have you ever actually ridden in one or driven one? Too bad it's about the only great thing Buick ever made.
- ipxodi, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5Perhaps you should read this then: http://www.jdpower.com/articles/article.aspx?ID=30 ...
Buick, Cadillac and Mercury are all in the top 5, while Hummer gets the "most improved" ranking. Also "models from General Motors and Ford receive the highest rankings in the midsize and large car segments." Oh, and the brand with the biggest quality decline for 2007? Mazda.
Not saying all American cars are good, but blanket statements like yours just serve to illustrate your ignorance.
(For what it's worth, I'm not a "Buy American" fanatic -- I drive a Ford Mustang and a Nissan Maxima -- the wife has a Subaru Legacy.) - dezman2003, on 11/29/2007, -1/+6If you don't drive it a lot you won't need new tires or oil changes or brakes very often, plus buying a domestic car like this is a boost to the economy.
- zeejay, on 11/29/2007, -1/+5For Mustang? Chrysler 300? PT Cruiser? Dodge Viper? Hummer? Some of the new Buicks are kind of stylin'. I also think the new Vettes are bad-ass. But you're right, it's a pretty short list.
At the same time, it's not as if anything (other than exotics) is coming out of Europe, either. If anything, they've gotten even more vanilla than US cars, especially BMW. - jlungu, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4To me the Corvette (with the possible exception of the C5 family, minus the ZR1) line has *always* had a ton of character.
- KLowD9x, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4He bashes American vehicles but owns a Ford GT.
Bashes Volvos all day on Top Gear but owns an XC90.
What is he trying to say? - cawpin, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4I believe it has 4 wheel independent suspension so it will probably corner quite well. Not that IS is required to corner well, but it certainly helps.
- rickbauls, on 11/29/2007, -1/+5about the same price at the mustang gt500, yet it's powered by a n/a motor, so probably has more potential. I'd buy one.
- avisgoth, on 11/29/2007, -0/+4It was awesome when he ran a Lotus Elise (I think) around a track, and them proceeded to compare its time to that of a Dodge Ram Truck. Yeah....awesome.
- turrican, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3I'll take the Plum Crazy '70 that's in the "It's On" ad down the page there.
- Reci, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Nissan GTR is actually cheaper
but yes the Z06 is priced very well for the performance
I just cannot believe it is made by the same company that makes cars like the (new) Impala, Malibu and Cobalt. You have to admit that you would never aspire to owning any of those cars other than getting a good deal on one used to just drive back and forth to work and leave it in the hot sun all day. But a Corvette, even the 400 hp one, is the total opposite. - CellMass, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Sounds like he just hates american rides. Oh well to each their own. Name a car in the same price range that beats a Z06. There isn't one!
- RizenBB, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Answer: learn to drive, buy better tires. There is a reason most performance cars are RWD.
- jc7012, on 11/29/2007, -2/+5Stop yelling.
- kushed, on 11/29/2007, -3/+6Dodge is a mighty fine car
- Gunsotsu, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Significantly less than $40K huh?
Once you throw in tax, tag, title, dealer markup, and don't forget all the extras like dealer installed goodies (like floormats because everyone knows that won't leave the factory with floormats) and five'll getcha ten that creaps up over $40K real quick. - dezman2003, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Engine heavy, frame that engine won't twist also heavy.
- Davedough, on 11/29/2007, -1/+4Thats held in the same regard as the Harley nuts bitching over the fact that the Revo engine put in the V-Rod. "Sure, its got more power, it runs more efficiently and overall a better technical design, but damnit I'm happy with my design that hasn't changed since the 1950s because its NOT A HARLEY" How about embrace technology and pay homage to the classics by a redesigned new-age thriller that doesn't have to be wrenched on every other weekend. Yeah, you may say you dont have to wrench on yours, but use it as a daily driver like many will do this and you will, I guarantee it. I have much respect for the older cars, but I personally think its exciting to see throwback designs with that new flair.
and btw, its "rekindle" - guinnessstout, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3This is the same as the movie industry remaking a movie that was great in the 60's in its original form. "Hey we've run out of ideas, lets just use old designs, sprus them up then over charge for it!"
- maticus, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2If you had read the article, you would know that it's actually made in Canada.
- CellMass, on 11/29/2007, -2/+4Second that. I drive an american SUV with the 6.1 hemi and I wipe the floor with most euros and asian based cars. Just a ton of torque and from a dig they can't hang. Only had issues with the new Cayenne Turbos S. But that more than double the cost of mine.
- Davedough, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Juggernaut?
- badfrog, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3I want this car just to make Al Gore cry.
- Idrive, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3I'm an import guy but I am also a car guy...that is a bad ass looking car and a great incorporation of the retro styling.
- CellMass, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2It won't take but a few days and it will be heavily modded and making regular runs at the local track. It's meant to be a toy for those who love cars and can have one in the garage for weekend use.
- jlawson1, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2and I'm keeping my '05 Magnum RT as well...
- cawpin, on 11/29/2007, -2/+4No, it isn't.
- CellMass, on 11/29/2007, -1/+3Sounds like someone is upset that they can't afford one. I am sure that Nova is wonderful on the MPG scale.
- igneouz, on 11/29/2007, -5/+7I LOVE THAT CAR!
- Chirp08, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2It would be more in the 20-30k range. If chevy sells their camaro loaded for 35k, base models in the low 20's they will make a killing. Remember this is competing with the GT500, which retails for 40ish, but you can't drive off the lot for under 50 :/ By tahat logic it will do fine, but chevy has a chance to really blindside these guys..
- RizzoFrank, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Shut up and keep driving your Beatle.
- Reci, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Actually he has bashed English cars also and admits Japanese make the same cars better and cheaper. The Vette thing, at the end, was uncalled for. Tire noise? So freakin what, it has mean, grippy, wide tires.
