- rhavenn, on 11/28/2007, -3/+41As long as you add:
1-year suspension of license for talking on the cell phone and impounding of the cell phone
2-years for putting on makeup while driving and loss of the car
5-years for reading the newspaper while driving and loss of the car
Anyone want to add more? - Lax32, on 11/28/2007, -2/+37How about a lifetime ban for driving like a douchebag on your cell phone oblivious to what is going on around you?
- Bukowsky, on 11/28/2007, -8/+42I'm all for motorcycle safety, but isn't this just a little excessive?
- thecosmicpope, on 11/28/2007, -1/+24The problem with this is, if you are prepared to pull a stunt which comes with a 10 year ban, you are probably prepared to ride whilst banned anyway.
- 13B1303, on 11/28/2007, -7/+26Of course the article pic is of a professional racer on a closed course.
Just let Darwinism do it's work. There are a lot of people in need of organs anyway. - JESUSREAM, on 11/28/2007, -4/+23How about a 5 year ban for cars driving too fast? Lets be consistent here. 99% of motorcycle/car wrecks pretty much only injure the motorcyclist anyway.
- gmiley, on 11/28/2007, -4/+18Not really, I live in South Florida and there is already enough retardation on the roads here to have to look out for ***** with a death-wish buzzing around. We have the worst combination of young and old here. The younger kids drive fast, weaving in an out of traffic, while the old folks drive slow and change lanes without signaling. I see, on a daily basis, groups of late-teen to mid/late-twenty-somethings on crotch-rockets doing wheelies, jumping dips in the road, and weaving all over to get ahead of traffic. I've also seen my fair share of dead motorcyclists around here. I don't just mean I have seen reports, but I have personally witnessed them (at least one a year), either right when they happen, or shortly after, before even the police arrive on the scene.
- halcyon626, on 11/28/2007, -9/+22The punishment should fit the crime. That's ***** ridiculous.
- floridiot2, on 11/28/2007, -0/+11Can I still masturbate while driving?
- N00F, on 11/28/2007, -0/+11A couple of years of bannation for driving slow in the fast lane. Pull out, pass, pull back in. Solves a LOT of road rage problems.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -2/+11Very excessive punishment that will be liberally applied and most often in situations where it is not warranted.
It is interesting to watch people flock to support a draconian punishment for activities they do not engage in themselves.
Motorcycles create little if any danger to operators of passenger cars and trucks I doubt that it is even statistically measurable.
Operating a motorcycle in a continuously reckless fashion will result in serious injury or death, if that threat does not stop them from engaging in such behaviour nothing will. - Pic0, on 11/28/2007, -3/+1120 years impound computer for being a moron on the internet
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -2/+10Time to move!
- AdamFromMyspace, on 11/28/2007, -2/+10As a stunt rider, I think this is ridiculous. Stunt riding is a sport and while guys like us (Ktown Khaos) are trying to make it respected, there are always idiots crashing on the highway and making the rest of us look bad.
The real problem is there is NOWHERE to practice my passion without getting hassled by somebody. After going to jail on a reckless driving charge (figures.. with NOBODY around..) and another careless driving ticket for rolling a stoppie on a deserted country road (an off-duty officer on foot happened to see and called it in), we now bounce from parking lot to parking lot, getting kicked out about once a week. We are still finalizing things with the local university to use one of their lots on Sundays, but in the mean time this is what it has come to.
I totally agree dangerous riding should be punished. The simple fact that one of my wheels may be off the ground when I'm by myself absolutely should NOT be punished.
Flame away. - inactive, on 11/28/2007, -3/+10Not when the guy wrecks on the interstate causing a 50 car pile up then its everyones problem.
- thehemi, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8Agreed. Banning cellphone use while driving should come before motorcycle wheelies. If the idiots on bikes want to endanger their own lives, why should anyone else care?
- wafflesomd, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7What if they do this stuff in like, a closed area?
- jackspade, on 11/28/2007, -3/+10I totally agree. As everyone probably already knows, South Florida is a third world country full of people with a third world mentality. It's time we stop ***** around with these ***** who threaten regular joes who have to schlep back and forth to work on 95 everyday. That goes for morons and these teenage bimbos who can't get the ***** of the cellphone.
- elhaf, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6Man, your drive must be WAY more interesting than mine.
- Devrdander, on 11/28/2007, -7/+13Living in South Florida i am all for this. They are endangering others with their stunts and cause many deaths to others while trying to show off. They need to realize that these things are not toys.
- kammy4u, on 11/28/2007, -2/+8Maybe it is just me, but I see this causing more problems than good. Bikes are made to go fast and all this is going to do is cause riders to go to extreme lengths to get away when the blue and reds turn on behind them when they pop a quick wheelie to show off to some friends.
I've had friends get pulled over for doing 100+mph, the heavier the penalty the less likely they are to pull over next time. - xero9, on 11/28/2007, -10/+16I'll probably get dugg down, but I agree with this. Too many times I've been passed on the highway by speeding motorcycles doing wheelies. I'm all for if you want to be stupid and kill yourself, by all means, but if you fall off and get run over, think of all the trouble this causes for other drivers.
- Devrdander, on 11/28/2007, -2/+8Exactly, they often kill OTHER people when they wreck, those bikes slice into a car like a knife at 100mph
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6yes, but you'll still get a slap on the............wrist
- Chaulis, on 11/28/2007, -7/+13As a biker I say this is a fantastic law. As I'm safely riding around on my Katana, wearing full armor, I have seen kids fly by going at least 30mph more than I was on surface roads. When you see them do an endo coming to a stop light just ahead, you have to wonder if the bike is going to fall on them or if their inexperienced trick riding will save them by some miracle and allow them to keep their bike balanced before it tips over. Same goes for wheelies, unless you have a trick bike with a wheelie bar, just don't do it. I'd love to see more of these people with their bikes locked up and their license revoked, they give good bikers a bad name, and give car drivers a reason to fear being any where near us on the road. Save the 120+mph, tricks, and leaning to the knee for the track, and stay smart on the road where you don't have total control.
- ExSlashdotter, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7Okay, so hot-rodding around on your bike gets you banned from a motorcycle license. Then hot-rodding around in your car ought to get you suspended from a regular drivers license.
What about these dumbasses like Hulk Hogan's friggin son? Same exact thing, different instrument. If you get caught burning rubber or streetracing in a car, it should be the same punishment then. This all coming from the admin of a sportbike forum site in the Tampa area. - DBoone, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7It is excessive. However what I worry about most is some power-hungry cop abusing the law. It is *very* easy to accidently lift the front wheel on a sport bike, even when not accelerating very hard. A small bump in the road, such as when crossing an intersection where the pavement sags from cars constantly stopping, can easily be enough to initiate a "pop-a-wheelie" when pulling away from a light.
- apr35, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6I disagree, I believe this is condoning the stereotyping of sport bike riders and will lead to the authorities feeling like they can pull over any sport bike rider under any circumstances and it will be justified.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5No, actually you wouldn't..
- gradivus, on 11/28/2007, -2/+7This goes too far,you can already get a ticket/fine for wheelies/speeding/weaving on a bike. This is just hyper authoritarian crap aimed at quelling the masses with fear. Just enforce the laws we already have, why is that NEVER an option? After a few tickets they wont have any points on their license and if they keep driving their bikes will get towed and impounded.
- cawpin, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5You drive in Phoenix? The left lane is the PASSING lane people. Get out of the way,.
- foolsgold, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5Uh, you realize the stat you just pulled had nothing to do withwhat jesusream said, right? Single vehicle motorcycle crashes are just that--crashes that involve a single vehicle (the motorcycle) and no others. That aside, your stat only talks about how many motorcyclists died and says nothing about injuries to people in other vehicles. Work on your google-fu.
- ColorBlind, on 11/28/2007, -2/+7As a sport bike rider, I feel you shouldn't be doing this stuff in the first place. The same power-to-weight ratio was exhibited yesterday in the lambo video that made the front page. If those people were caught they would face the same punishment. This isn't just your life we're talking about. It's everyone else whom is driving at the time as well.
- gmiley, on 11/28/2007, -1/+5I should add, I don't have a problem with motorcyclists passing me in heavy traffic. They are, by law, allowed to pass between stopped/slow vehicles in traffic. What I am concerned about is the reckless driving that I frequently see.
- nbcaffeine, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4all the way to jail
- nbcaffeine, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4yeah, he would be executed via taser first
- Dax420, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4They already do that, using a taser.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4To... I need a reason to stop riding.
pshh - kammy4u, on 11/28/2007, -1/+5Most of the amazing crashes are because people are trying to get away from the cops because they are afraid of the penalty. Can you imagine how many more people will try to get away with the punishment of mandatory jail time?
- cawpin, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4Except for a vehicle crossing center there shouldn't ever be a 50 car pile up. If you are driving like you are supposed to you are far enough back to stop if somebody wrecks in front of you.
- mmmcookies, on 11/28/2007, -1/+55 years for eating while driving.
10 years for changing clothes while driving.
20 years for not having your kids in their seatbelts. - EarlOfLade, on 11/28/2007, -3/+7Another example of idiotic US sentence guidelines, no wonder you have more people in prison than anyone else and higher crimes than other countries.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4ever think that maybe karma would catch up to YOU just for entertaining that horrific thought of yours?
- sportbikepilot, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3well then, if you lose your motorcycle endorsement due to stunt/unsafe riding, for your second offense, they take your bike and auction it off. and in the future any bike you are caught sitting on becomes property of the state too, even if it belongs to your buddy...
- EmperorAwesome, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3That may be the case if the law was enforced fairly, but the interpretation of reckless riding in this case is enough to open the door for power-hungry pigs to harass people like apr35.
- atomicwedgie, on 11/28/2007, -3/+6Being a sport rider myself... this might be a lil extreme but the problem for me is that all these jerkoff kiddies on bikes are making ALL of us look bad. I find people in cars actually HOPING to knock me off the road at times. Yes, I LOVE going fast and I LOVE doing fun stuff but there is a time and a place for everything. Pissing people off ain't helping the cause.
- nallelcm, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3FTA: "10 year ban on your motorcycle license, mandatory jail time, and an impounded bike."
You're so smart, thanks for pointing out license ban != jail time... but I think he might have been referring to the 'mandatory jail time' part of the article... but I've been wrong before oh wise one. - SnuKs, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4Yea it's pretty harsh, but I think they wanna kill this problem before it gets too crazy kinda like how illegal street racing was back in the late 90's/early 00's. It seems like the old street racing crowd just all went sold their rice rockets and bought cheaper and faster bikes.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3Is he trying to help him prove his point or what? lol!
Becasue it seems from his first sentence that he disagrees somehow... - xero9, on 11/28/2007, -3/+6Sure..
Executed on the side of the road for DUI. I'm all for that. -
