- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35Apple iPhone software update coming soon. Bye-bye hacked features!
- acheslow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"until it can do what any normal ppc/smart phone can do
You mean crash? - ttntyler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Don't update then?
- lithiumsystems, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I cant wait till someone bricks their iPhone.
- sukimashita, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Then wait a bit and "hello hacked features!" once again. It's a game Apple can't win anyways (which also is an argument against closing down the system).
Look at how Sony's PSP gets hacked over and over again despite massive firmware updates. - rberger909, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'd be alright with that if they would just release a ***** update already!
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Remember, Apple was pretty lenient when it came to Apple TV hacks. In fact, they took some of the hacks as feature requests and added them!
- OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A huge chunk of the phones out there have to be hacked in order to get your own custom ringtones - the ones you already own, as opposed to the ones that the cell carrier will sell you - on them.
- ImPr3zA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Who cares about personal ringtones?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Apple has never installed any software without the user's consent. It would be a first if they started now...
- ZigVicious, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2who the hell follows HA regs?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That still didn't stop them from deleting all your unsupported plugins and removing a bunch of OS X frameworks they depended on with the software update. I was forced to update specific items manually in order to keep the frameworks I wanted and get the benefits from the software update. While they're not putting in a lot of effort to stop hacking, they are certainly trying to make their lives harder. Some of the most useful functionality on my AppleTV is made possible by unsupported plugins (NitoTV mainly).
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I wouldn't bother too much with hacks. Apple will release an SDK or the thing will just die off. I think they're just holding off now so there's no ***** apps during the initial deployment to give it a bad name.
- princessangry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3sometimes the updates are forced and auto-uploaded to your cell (upated using the cell towers), and you don't have any option to reject it, as well as no notification that the update was done, except if you knew the prev version number and you know it has changed.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yo do know that its illegal to to force users to update because a user needs to agree to a eula before each update and if the user refuses to agree the Eula the update cannot be installed.
- calvarez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1People who lack a personality?
- winmac96, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Hello custom ringtones and goodbye warranty.
- Protoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe they do want people doing this, they didn't make it that hard to hack, and I'm sure they can just tell AT&T they did their best :P
- Blitzenn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1...and what rock have you been hiding under, lol.
- BBeerB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"You mean crash?"
Nope, I think he meant true bluetooth sync with a laptop, mms, record movies, mass storage, and maybe a way to use it as a modem when traveling. That is just off the top of my head. Anyone else got anything?
/owns Iphone - StarManta, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5- You can sign up using the SSN 999-99-9999 in order to activate the iPhone without AT&T.
I would say this is ggreat for Apple, really bad for AT&T. - Azio, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I'm pretty sure this is the fifth time I've seen a story about this exact same ***** thing. From now on I'm just going to tag every iPhone story I see as a dupe.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Safari could be a bit more stable, in my week and a half's experience. Actually, it's the least stable browser I've ever used, including IE6. Sometimes it takes the iPod down with it. And it has serious issues with Digg's comment system, in what must be the most sickening twist of fate ever.
Or at least that's the case with mine. Otherwise, it's a fantastic device with great features that work very well, even if it would benefit from third-party software. And it's not nearly as hampered by EDGE as I'd have expected, given all the FUD about it. - stormbreaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can you not hack it with a SIM?
I'd like to hack my iPhone, but I still want to be able to use... THE ***** PHONE! - WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They're coming, supposedly... Still, it's a pretty big omission for a phone...
- skellener, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree 100%. With all the songs already in someone's music library, why should you have to pay for a ringtone when you already own hundreds of songs to choose from.
- flickr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm sure you were joking but releasing a half-complete SDK is what would have been lazy. I'm sure they will release and SDK when they and it are ready.

- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Woot. Now that we can mess around with installing software, I really need to get my hands on one of these bad boys. I just love experiencing the birth of a new development platform... I guess I'll just have to place my order online again and wait the month or so it takes for them to ship it out...
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I can't believe with all the potential here, people are going on about custom ringtones. If you want to hear your song that bad, fire it up - it's an iPod too you know!
I look forward to adjusting advanced preferences in apps that ave no UI exposing them to manipulation... - PowerLlama, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I wonder what stories are in that Top 10 in all categories column over there... Oh yeah the exact same story from engadget.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Other companies waste gobs of money fruitlessly fighting hackers. Apple doesn't spend as much time on this, so chances are whatever an update breaks will easily be bypassed or fixed.
- smellinator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Surely Apple expected this, and probably seeded the hacker community. The more hacks, the more hackers who will buy one, and the more practical and fun the phone becomes. And they can eliminate the hacks one by one if they choose.
- calvarez, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Right. We have had full access to the Pocket PC file system for years and there are still no viruses in the wild. Conceptual/lab viruses don't count.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I like the iPhone because if Apple looses to the hackers it's going to make cell phones a lot better.
People will begin to expect the hacked features (freedom the devices should ***** have anyway)
And then all the phones will eventually allow you to add custom stuff to your hearts content.
The ringtone racket is going bye bye.
iPhone is still a decade behind what they have in Korea/Japan. - vitaminKsGood4u, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1they may do like iTunes and just disable features if you are a certain version behind the latest. i have been forced to upgrade iTunes so that i could listen to my purchased music. they could do something similar, and i would see this as bas as installing something without my permission. i did not want to upgrade itunes, but to play MY music they forced me to.
- ketsugi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1A phone isn't useful to me unless I can set the Final Fantasy "Victory" theme as my ringtone. So there.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's kind of like buying the most ornate carriage in the world, just as Ford is rolling out the cars off the line...
Perhaps Tyco of Penny Arcade said it best:
"I have been waiting for the ability to manipulate technology by pressing dynamic symbols for basically ever. If you find such things unpleasant, then I suggest you develop a taste for forced labor because by the year twenty-twenty all that sneer is going to get you is a slot in the underclass boiling corpses. Get with the ***** program. Come and touch the neon glyphs."
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/07/02 - princessangry, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1however forcing you to have one of about 25 ringtones makes it dull ans boring that 1/25 people have the same ringtone as you! talk about taking away the most obvious personalization of a cell phone! does it annoy you when you hear the default ringtone when your our at the mall and like half the mall has that as thier ringtone. it's so annoying and it says "I can't change my ringtone". like they are n00bs.
talk about fixed conformitity just like hosing associations wont let you paint your house color the way you want it and forcing you to pick 6 colors of your house and only 3 different kinds of plants, if you paid 300K for a house you ought to be able to do what you want with it! - Blitzenn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4"Full access to the file system means " ... viruses coming soon.
- clackerd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1all this waah-waah ***** about the iphone is worse than all the articles about the iphone. it's safe to say all of us have had iphone over-exposure. shut up and go ride your bike.
- superKduper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That's impossible! OS-X is a 100% secure operating system and is hack-proof.
- oilcan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8wait wait wait....you're telling me, the iphone had to be *hacked*, in order for you to have custom ringtones?
- tzonic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Me too, but while we are at it, can we do that with the PS3 as well?
- GodjustGod, on 10/11/2007, -12/+11Who cares, no matter how much it's cracked, and until it can do what any normal ppc/smart phone can do, it's crap.
- JNando, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I was like i want one..but now..am like....hmmmm Nokia N95 has far better features and is open platform (as in u can develop to it)
+ has wifi + 3g....and any carrier can take it! is not touch screen..but..........hmmmm touch screen not really a decider for me to purchase a phone i mean $600 is a lot! -
