http://procrastineering.blogspot.com/2007/12/head- ... - Hobbes24, on 01/03/2008, -5/+3come on people, there's no "I" in "Wii"....*****...
- rssloco, on 01/03/2008, -28/+0very cool video....it just sucks they used silverlight...it's a pitty that this is going to seem ridiculosly primitive after whatever apple is going to release
- thedigster, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12Actually he says it's WPF not Silverlight.
- dejager, on 01/03/2008, -9/+5Going to release? Apple released this years ago as a UI framework called Quartz. There is absolutely no reason why this interface couldn't be ported into Quartz Composer just as easily as it would be to port over to Flex, Flash, or any of the other frameworks mentioned in the video.
- bodiggler, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3I don't know why parent is being dugg down. You can interface a Wii remote with Quartz Composer: http://www.daisyrust.com/2007/02/12/quartz-compose ... It would be easy to build an Apple app with this interface.
- thenativeraver, on 01/03/2008, -3/+17That's pretty sweet!
- actorboy, on 01/03/2008, -17/+48Can somebody please explain to a silly 40-something like myself what good this technology is? They've essentially invented a need for longer mouse-like movement while simultaneously putting more physical fatigue on the user. Isn't this the exact opposite of what a good interface should be?
- Gonz037, on 01/03/2008, -8/+4I'd say its for the day when your computer and your TV are the same thing... Its just basically another step forward.
- Myonosken, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2The day? A good number of people do that now we have big HD LCD TVs.
- dead777, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3whoa, that's like all 2001 and *****.
- Gonz037, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3*****, I'm sure SOME people are, but not a good number. I mean the day EVERYONE's computer IS their TV and you sit on your couch and push buttons and ***** by waving your arms around... then a little marble ball will shoot out of your ***** that predicts the future.
- Myonosken, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2The day? A good number of people do that now we have big HD LCD TVs.
- seastobble, on 01/03/2008, -2/+38Yeah, but you look BAD ASS!
- N256, on 01/03/2008, -3/+11You can't look cool using a mouse 8)
- citizen782, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4Yes I can.
- skyteria, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5Fine, everybody but citizen782 can't look cool using a mouse.
- Erik1, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4But waving and picking at imaginary objects looks cooler?
- citizen782, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4Yes I can.
- chrisbosh123, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7you get more exercise on your hand instead of just 2 fingers
- PvtJenkins, on 01/03/2008, -2/+24Well the way I see it, all these crazy and wacky UI vids we've seen lately are just baby steps towards the next big thing, which could be something more physical than a mouse. You use your hands to pick up stuff in the real world, why not be able to do that in virtual space? This stuff could be used for 3d design and other fields one day. It's hard to see where this is all taking us now cause it's still really awkward and buggy (you can see him "miss" picking things up plenty of times during this vid) but once this becomes fully fleshed out, it could be HUGE.
- citizen782, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1"You use your hands to pick up stuff in the real world, why not be able to do that in virtual space?"
As a designer, why would I want or need to? Watching Minority Report for the first time I actually commented how dumb they looked interacting with the UI. Give me a chair and wireless Logictec any day. If I need exercise I'll go out into the real world thanks.- LLLSecretChimp, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Wireless? If you're moving your hand enough for the cord to get tangle up, you're not sedentary enough.
- citizen782, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1"You use your hands to pick up stuff in the real world, why not be able to do that in virtual space?"
- siggyfawn, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4As most people are pointing out, it's a start. I'm sure there were people who thought the Wright brothers were ideas flying that POS that would never amount to anything. The internet was never indented to be the internet. It just grew out of the initial project.
A person doing cool things in different ways is pretty much how everything starts. No you won't be buying it at Wal-Mart next month, deal with it.- Darthyoshiboy, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Actually, you can buy it at Wal-Mart today. That is, if you can find a spare Wii-mote.
- bizkit00, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2multi-touch, controlling 2 or more things at once. not so great for web browsing, but for controlling video game units its great!
- ToBeFairOKChaps, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1This type if interface may be useful for huge screens taking up all your peripheral vision, but then all it'll really be good for is content management and simple media viewing. Any data input would take a complicated set of gestures or a virtual keyboard, and why have virtual when you can have real?
- proseandpromise, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2you could just have one screen. you could pull up a virtual keyboard anywhere that you needed one, and put it away when you don't. We don't see use for this now because our software is made for single touch interface, but if people start engineering around this technology, who knows what we'll end up with.
- mexicracker530, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1this is sort of cool, if someone gets a voice emulator synced with this you could just talk and use a couple gestures to do just about anything, just imagine...instead up having to double click an icon to go to a remote computer then user name and password then connect then session back; or with this..you could program a gesture to do all the same with the shake of a wrist. +1
- i208khonsu, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2The ideal system is one that wouldn't require a glove and the system would just recognize hand gestures. Something that Sony is actually working on with the EyeToy2.
This is just something cool for developers to play with and begin to imagine and experiment with whatever technology is going to be practical before it's ever invented. Imagine being able to watch a movie, then bring up and control a playback menu with just a few hand gestures; not requiring the assistance of a remote, gloves, etc...
It's defiantly not going to replace the mouse for general computing; however technologies like this are defiantly on the horizon - killdashnine, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3Actually I welcome it because it allows us the option to "get off our fat asses" and be more interactive. Wii is way better than traditional games because you more around a lot more ... if my desktop environment would be more this way it's be great.
- noahhoward, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1In simulation, if you are going to have someone interact with something on the screen to familiarise them with the way to do something let them use their hands rather than a mouse.
- volacide, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2It's all about a more natural movement. Mice are easy to move, yes, but since you're not actually moving the cursor directly on the screen like it's more natural on a tablet PC for instance, it's easier for non-computer friendly people to just start using a tablet pc. Same idea here.
- skyfire1, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Whats the points of having a GUI when you can just search folders using commands?
- prisoner24601, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2You are driving in your car. You want to change the radio/heater/whatever. You no longer have to reach for an actual knob in a specific location (which both requires you to look away from the road, and also can be challenging to give the correct "fine tuning" to on a bumpy road, or at high speed.)
Now you reach you hand (without looking) into a 3-d space over the gear shift perhaps. You make a closed-fist, then open hand gesture perhaps to signal the IR camera that a command will follow, and an audible "chirp" tells you it's ready. You now close your hand and point one finger up to signal volume up, etc. Don't think of this as a mouse alternative for situations where you could use a mouse, think of situations where there is no decent control solution.
- Gonz037, on 01/03/2008, -8/+4I'd say its for the day when your computer and your TV are the same thing... Its just basically another step forward.
- Shao00, on 01/03/2008, -29/+1it looks fake, the movement happens before he moves his arms a few times during the video........
- petemcfraser, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10...AND you're a moron.
- FredSpeaking, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2pixels are too square for you, are they?
- N256, on 01/03/2008, -3/+3It would be way easier to just make the program than to sync your hands with a pre-made video the way he did.
- suprchunk, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Yeah, coding something like that is way easier than 'hand-syncing.'
- assbeard, on 01/03/2008, -5/+11that looks like your arms would get tired FAST.
- PRlME, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1jep and thats why it just wont work. cool to look at but not logical
- sint4x, on 01/03/2008, -4/+26Brilliant! Now I can hold my arms up for hours while I show off my photos.
- ninephoenixes, on 01/03/2008, -8/+2So basically, it's like 2 wiimotes in glove form.
- twarner, on 01/03/2008, -3/+3Your hips.Your thighs.You got me hypnotized
- EmailAddress, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Your face. Your ass. What's the difference?
- ladon86, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2Good reference, both of you.
- jads, on 01/03/2008, -3/+4That is ***** insane... as much as I thought the Minority Report interface was awesome, I can't see myself using it day in day out...
- Chuckanut, on 01/03/2008, -5/+10The screaming baby off camera helps to add a human element to the technology.
- benburned, on 01/03/2008, -7/+4didn't johnny chung lee already do this
- N256, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Watch the video, he is credited.
- skullfckr, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3He did give props to Johnny
- Mactrekr, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2Wicked!
- Brian48216, on 01/03/2008, -2/+17for 8 days work that's pretty damn impressive.
- piratearggghhh, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3I'm glad to see this type of innovative technology being explored instead of just the linear path we've been taking of faster processors, more memory, prettier interface for the pretty much the same exact stuff we've been doing for the last 20 years with PCs - sitting at a keyboard staring at a monitor.
- dho331, on 01/03/2008, -2/+1I sit at a computer staring at a monitor for at least 8 hours per day, more on weekends. There is no way I would stand up or move my arms when I could do the same thing sitting down only moving my fingers. You have no respect for people that are out of shape, much like nintendo. WiiFit, more like WiiDumb.
- Henry, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7Sweet. The rock climbing wall video game I made won't suck so much now.
- skyteria, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Only as long as it includes the bolt gun from Cliffhanger.
- hongrich, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
the site is down now, but he explains how everything works, and more - darknesfallz, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2If someone wants to do this with their wii, heres a short tutorial created by hackaday.com on how you can do so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0awjPUkBXOU
- thuang513, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2seems pretty cool, although it looks kinda buggy...
- Cryoniq, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Geesh... I wonder why......
- danielsanII, on 01/03/2008, -7/+14Seems to be ripped off or inspired by Johnny Chung Lee's work: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
Here are the videos:
* Tracking Your Fingers with the Wiimote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0awjPUkBXOU
* Low-Cost Multi-point Interactive Whiteboards Using the Wiimote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s5EvhHy7eQ
* Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
Johnny Chung's website also contains the full C# source code, so you can do all of this yourself.- danielsanII, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9I need to correct myself. It is indeed inspired by Johnny's work, but the authors properly credit him. Sorry for the false accusations.
- bizkit00, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2he is credited and given props in the video.
- tgc1, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0First thing that came to mind. I'm glad i'm not the only one who saw it. That guy (Chung) is amazingly talented and a genius with his work reengineering the wii-mote for his projects. Amazing body of work and some fascinating results. Plus his videos are enjoyable to watch because he articulates his ideas well and conveys the idea in a simple way that's easy to understand for non-techy types.
- Cryoniq, on 01/03/2008, -6/+1I see a lot of shoulder pain on the horizon....
And yeah, as someone said.. it is a rip-off of Johnny Chung Lee's work. Was my direct thought as well. But HEY! Microsoft dudes never ripped anything in the past, have they? ;P - MioTheGreat, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I wish we could get ahold of just the IR camera that they put in the Wiimote for cheap. That way, we could build little standalone units that work like the wiimote, but cheaper.
Or would any really cheap camera work? I haven't taken apart a wiimote to see if there's any lens or anything in front of it.- skifreak107, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1My company makes the gyroscopic sensors and IR sensors in the Wiimote :)
They won't let me keep any though :(- stormgren, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1They're made by two different companies. The accelerometer is made by Analog Devices, and the IR sensor is made by PixArt....
- skifreak107, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1My company makes the gyroscopic sensors and IR sensors in the Wiimote :)
- gannondork, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2That video made me think of Tom Cruise, oh how I loathe him.
- SiNN4R, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4I've been waiting for Nintendo to rerelease the power glove for the wii.
- kmedlin, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1I'm suffering from a torn rotator cuff...that looks painful ;)
- webjoseph, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1They need a better URL... They should engineer that first.
- privatepile, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0It's great to see new innovations and ideas. I could definitely see myself using an (improved) interface like this - maybe not for everyday use, but for web browsing on a TV, video games, and navigating console/media centre menus it would be brilliant...
- Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1couldn't i just hook up 2 mice for the same effect?
i see the obvious problems that most diggers saw, but i saw it as a bunch of geeks with forearms like popeye. - lickfire, on 01/03/2008, -7/+5IT IS FAKE!!!! check out the screen at 1:28, the full picture starts to move off the screen before he gets to say, "why don't we see what else we can do with this". Come on guys, how can you miss that!
- Gantos, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2I spotted that too. After that moment (1:28), I figured we were watching a pre-recorded video over which his rehearsed actions were meant to appear as though he was controlling the actions on the screen.
- mercury187, on 01/03/2008, -1/+0your right! I watched it again and paid attention at 1:28, the image moves off the screen then the guy real quickly makes a gesture that should have made the image do that. Good eye!
- solique, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Aww, I can't wait till I have money to throw away on useless and exploitive product development. Didn't bury because it's always fun to see new uses for the Wiimote; might reconsider when i fully realize I hate Microsoft's more.
- Unreal595, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5man imagine that with porn
- Jargonaut06, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2you'd have to control the picture with one hand though.
- mercury187, on 01/03/2008, -4/+1i did not see a wiimote anywhere in the video, just some guy controlling things on the screen with his finger tips (pinching them together and moving them around)???? or is wiimote the software hes using? I didnt listen to the video because this pc doesnt have sound, just wanted to see what it was all about..
- exomni, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Are you blind or something?
- madwh, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I WANT
- exomni, on 01/03/2008, -2/+0Wow. That was SO unresponsive.
- jspooner, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0I know that guy!
- praveenmarkandu, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2after probably millions of dollars spent in R&D, before its even released to the public/consumer market... surface is already obsolete.
- realjames, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Who decided that photos scattered in an unorganized matter was going to be the "next big thing" in photo viewing? Isn't that a step back? First Microsoft's table thing has that interface, then this.
- parbjohal, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2the best 'buy our company and own our tech' video i've seen.... so far....
- dho331, on 01/03/2008, -6/+0That is the most suspicious video I have ever seen, first of all, the tv was displaying crap that was way too similar to all the icon manipulation etc. crap you see out there, plus, the user had 1 video, they were a so called "company" and they only presented a demonstration with 10 seconds of an explanation of how it worked, not a powerpoint, not a place for more information, and they used a wiimote for professional research? What a joke, just use any other type of laser pointing device. If this is real, then this guy is a complete retard if he ever wants to be successful. He's probably one of the many Microsoft employees that totally fails at life.
- steelclash84, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Your an idiot. The Wii Remote is hardly a "laser pointing device". It's a rather sophisticated IR camera. Hence, why the guy was wearing IR lights attached to the gloves on his hands and having the remote facing him recording his movements. Name another IR camera that works as well as a Wii's remote (that also tracks 4 simultaneous IR motions @ 100 hz) for $40...oh that's right you still think it's a laser pointer...
Ignorant.

- SLockhart, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1The mouse is the best way to work in a 2D environment and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
- xlar54, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Youre going to need to come up with more interesting software than just "Hey look what I can do with pictures!". So you have a fancy Nintendo power glove. Woopdeedoo.
