- PFS1, on 01/29/2008, -4/+188I am currently working on plans to make a cheap media PC for the main room at my house, and every time I do, I am tempted to ditch the project because I'm sure that wii homebrew is just around the corner now, and the wii would fit the bill perfectly as a media center if it could just be programmed to do the job. Just imagine XBMC, but with USB ports for external drives, 17W power usage for guiltless always-on, a tiny, attractive form factor, wireless pointers for menu browsing, classic controllers for old school console emulation, and wifi. It is absolutely ideal for pulling media from all over your house/the web to wherever you choose to drop your little white box. And all for $250. Wii homebrew can't come soon enough.
- satoshi109, on 01/29/2008, -6/+115Now we're well on our way to what could be the best homebrew console yet
- HyperHacker, on 01/29/2008, -6/+56A console flamewar already?
- kaytrio, on 01/29/2008, -0/+30How has this not been on the homepage for the last day and a half? This is an awesome start.
- XxbladesfirexX, on 01/29/2008, -1/+31Is there a download of the gamesave somewhere?
- se1zure, on 01/29/2008, -0/+24use the duke nukem forever analogy here... more people will be able to relate.

Posted: Sun Jan 27, 2008 6:09 pm Post subject: Wii Zelda Exploit, run homebrew without a modchip
It is now possible to run homebrew without a modchip . This was achieved using a exploit on Zelda found by Bushing along with Segher .
A modified save game from Zelda crashes the Wiii and let them run their own code on it.
This paves the way to finally running Linux on the Wii, without a modchip. While news and information are little now, watch this post develops as information becomes available.

- neko, on 01/29/2008, -1/+19Because modchips cost money, and most people who are into homebrew are broke ;)

- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+17You obviously haven't heard of the Dreamcast with 200Mhz which does it just fine
- nicko68, on 01/29/2008, -9/+25Keep pirating games and there won't be ANY good games worth $50 to worry about.
- steban, on 01/29/2008, -4/+19Pictures of the hack: http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Homebrew
- Dracker, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16Wii piracy is already widespread thanks to modchips.
But you're right, this discovery could easily lead to a loader to launch all kinds of homebrew and probably boot pirate discs too :( - InvisibleKid, on 01/29/2008, -0/+14Because then you could have homebrew without voiding your warranty and without doing something illegal too.
- mattmcm, on 01/29/2008, -2/+16No.
- lonnieh, on 01/29/2008, -2/+16"never experienced achievements"
RL has these as well, you have to work a bit harder for them though - GeneralFailure0, on 01/29/2008, -4/+17I like my Wii, but I've gotta say that online play is kinda nice.
- wbtn, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12Hello World
- stisev, on 01/29/2008, -1/+13I think the title is a little misleading, but it's a start.
I can't wait for a modless solution! - seanthebond, on 01/29/2008, -3/+15Okay, somebody explain this to me in simplistic terms. Will I be able to run SNES Roms and Linux at some point down the road? Or is this like the "Flying Cars" thing which I won't be seeing.. ever.
- scottsolo, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12I mean, an exploit was found. This DOESN'T mean that homebrew on the Wii without a mod chip is possible already. I'm sure it will be MONTHS before anything useful is done with this exploit!
- insomniac8400, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12It has usb ports.
- LordSturm, on 01/29/2008, -1/+13It's not as simple as a game save, u might need to unpack and repack one of your own saves.
- VeganG, on 01/29/2008, -2/+14Who has a Wii, is interested in homebrew, and doesn't have Zelda?
- p0ss, on 01/29/2008, -2/+14oh if only there were ANY games for $50. All Wii games near me are $90+ I love my wii, but $90 for cooking mama is ludicrous. australia always gets raped on games prices.. I've bought 10 games allready.. thats nigh on $1000 worth of games. You can bet i'll be pirating some games given half a chance.
- deltaandroid, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11To do that fully they would have to render all the old Twilight Princess discs useless, as they are the key apparently
- Tishiablo, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11A 2gig sd card is more than enough space to do many things. Not to mention you could probably take advantage of the usb ports and hook up some 16 gig flash drives = |
- McallenSchmee, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10Did you read it? The first sentence is "It is now possible to run homebrew without a modchip". And the disk is the retail Zelda disk, the only thing changed is the save file.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10I would love to have MAME on the Wii and play some classic arcade games, it's more than capable of running every arcade game out there
- se1zure, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10i can't say i have helped those statistics
- mingistech, on 01/29/2008, -6/+15I'm currently running XBMC on my Dell. It's a hackintosh with Leopard 10.5.1 installed. I mostly use FrontRow for my media needs... but XBMC for OSX is really coming along....
You can get a copy at
http://www.osxbmc.com/ - TomEEE, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Linux and USB ports...
Even with an external HDD, the Wii would be smaller than the 360 or PS3 - MarkKezner, on 01/29/2008, -1/+10To each his own.
Why are some gamers such hard-headed pricks that think what they prefer is what's best for everyone? Besides, do you really think comments like this will discourage him? - hadak, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Yarrrrrrrrrrr
- homesickalien, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Could a wii firmware update thwart homebrew launching or is this some type of foolproof hack?
- bagboyrebel, on 01/29/2008, -2/+11[citation needed]
- cerealjynx, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Or the PSP which runs MAME just fine in 222mhz (Or 333)
- m1ss1ontomars, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9I like the controls of the GameCube version. I know everyone is raving over how you can actually swing your sword or whatever in the Wii version, but the original GameCube version brings back really nice memories of when I had more friends and when I still had perfect grades. :-/
- mCanada, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7Put simply, once you can run a simple program that prints "hello world" on the screen, you've proven that you can access it's core functions. From there people use those building blocks to create bigger and better things. The important part is that you can access the system and compile a program. From my limited knowledge this is not pie in the sky, you will see big things in the homebrew world and soon. (relatively soon).
xbmc took a year (err two?) after launch. first came evox then things like avalaunch came and then XBMP... so it's an evolutionary process - p0ss, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7wif + media server.
- bagboyrebel, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8was that really necessary?
- centran, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7You can stream stuff from your network.
I have a modded XBox with XBox Media Center. The only thing I have to put on my Xbox are Game ISO's. I can play music, pictures and even stream DVD movie ISO's off my network.
The only problem with the Wii will be the same problem with the XBox. You can't play 1080i content due to lack of processor power. - starkruzr, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9No. Now we are well on our way to Nintendo patching the exploit in about 2 weeks and ending everyone's fun.
- SierraAlpha, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7Seriously I own all three and I'm tired of hearing this *****. Each is great in it's own respect.
Xbox 360 - Powerful, affordable, fantastic graphics, great game lineup so far.
PS3 - Arguably most powerful next generation system, powerful cpu, interesting OS and application.
Wii - Innovative, unique game lineup, easy to pickup and play, appeals to the masses.
Now shut your piehole. - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -7/+13yeah, but the ps3 is gay.......
- Thekirby45, on 01/29/2008, -2/+8hope this doesn't end up like the psp many sales for the hardware no sales from the software
- coheedcollapse, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6It'd be amazing if we could get CFW's like with the PSP. I have a wiikey, but if that were the case my Wii would be getting even more news than it does now.
- iofthestorm, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Consoles have less overhead and more specialized CPUs than PCs.
- sotopheavy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Hopefully there is a way to use a usb HD
