- angel.wardriver, on 02/25/2009, -1/+16That is pretty cool. If the newspaper editor who created this gets cut by The Birmingham News (Scripps), I hope he can find a niche market for these. You never know, one day you're working for a Scripps newspaper and then BOOM you're laid off. Good luck to this creative dude.
- gbarger, on 02/25/2009, -0/+11I built a full size arcade machine cabinet that was expensive, pointless, huge, and a pain to move...but I stained it so it looks like a piece of furniture and it makes a great piece of furniture. It's just fun and it looks cool, does it need another point. Maybe he will sit and look at the headlines before he goes into work.
- JaminKirby, on 02/25/2009, -0/+10I'm assuming it was just a hobby project.. He's no going to carry it around or take it on the bus (obviously). He even said they were past front page he's worked on. Think of this as a modded digital picture frame.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/25/2009, -5/+15Powered by a Mac Mini? You could have built the same thing for half the price if you had gone with a simple Linux box instead. How stupid.
- tondezz, on 02/25/2009, -0/+9Call me when it shows nudie mags
- poorbusker, on 02/25/2009, -4/+12Truly geek, purely amazing
- stevenyenzer, on 02/25/2009, -8/+15this just seems expensive and pointless--are you gonna sit in front of it and watch it while you eat breakfast in the morning?
- ObeseSnake, on 02/25/2009, -4/+10Neat art project but come on. You are not going to carry this on the bus with you on your way to work or sit there and stared at it while having your coffee from across the room.
- FXNGLAS, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7Cool project, completely useless.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6If I cannot have pointless things in my house, what have I got left?
- doctechnical, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5What does my good to go have to do with it?
- everfresh59, on 02/25/2009, -1/+6All it needs is a laser printer, and your good to go....
- Sofi4n, on 02/25/2009, -1/+6This guy is full of awesomeness.
- TheBadWolf, on 02/25/2009, -5/+10My brother's a print journalist, and he got a call from a friend of his once:
"What's black and white and completely over?"
"What?"
"Your industry." - isunktheship, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4I wouldn't have the mechanical one in my house either for that matter, and order the paper, stock it myself, and pay 25 cents to take it out again...
Creativity doesn't need to be practical, this is simply for the thrill of having it, and to mod!
What a KJ obesesnake. - tacojohn48, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4My guess is he had one sitting around. At least I hope.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -3/+7Its like taking a swiss army knife and gluing down all the blades except the most useless one.
- JoshChan, on 02/25/2009, -1/+5Any geeks can turn such expensive equipment into something as simple as displaying newspaper frontpage. The problem is this thing wont stay for a day on street without being stolen.
- doctechnical, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4I consider it more like a 1:3 scale model of the Millennium Falcon made out of Lego: not terribly practical, but building it made the builder happy.
- astrotrain, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Come on kids... lets all gather around the electric news box to read the paper.
- bigteebo, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4Newspapers are obsolete.
- kdor, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4Finally an alternative to the Kindle.
- isunktheship, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3What niche market? It's called the ***** TV.
- mithilion, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2how about plug in a kindle (or other mobile device that you can read pdf (or whatever you want)) and download them? Could this be the real news stand of tomorrow? All you'd need is a way to pay, to deliver content (cell network, just like the kindle), to power (solar?) and use e-ink (lower power) and it's pretty much good to go.
Very cool.
(sorry about all the parenthesis) - hmcook87, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1A linux box of course would have worked fantastically with the applescript back end he wrote.
- estydees, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Doesn't this support that newspapers are OBSOLETE? You are you giving more reasons to digitalize newspapers. If you are keeping the quarters then who is buying the newspapers? No one..
- deweyhewson, on 02/25/2009, -1/+2I believe he was referring to your need for a laser printer, and one of these:
http://www.drtoy.com/awards/product.php?ProductID= ... - kulpreetsingh, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1That's quite a unique concept! FYI, you can actually read today's entire newspaper front-to-back before it hits the newsstand at http://PressDisplay.com. We have over 900 world newspapers and magazines.
- fcruz1331, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1*whoosh*
- WitnessX, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1The title itself is an oxymoron: Who says newsPAPERS are obsolete? The DIGITAL newsstand. If its digital, its not a newspaper dude.
- webgeek2point0, on 02/25/2009, -1/+1Pretty cool project. He did a good job. Unfortunately, he doesn't really know how computers work. FTA: "The kiosk makes a handy Web browser and picture viewer, but you'll want to keep copyright law in mind before downloading images." Has he never heard of a browser cache? As soon as you view the image, you've downloaded it onto your computer!
- gatorbid, on 02/26/2009, -0/+0The Birmingham News is not owned by Scripps It's a Newhouse newspaper
- GrodyChamp, on 02/25/2009, -3/+3I say they are considering I don't know a single person who still subscribes to one. This is a complete waste of $
- AdmrlTact, on 02/25/2009, -1/+0Good news, everyone! Ive invented a machine that will display the news paper that will revolutionize the world. It weighs 50 pounds and only displays week old papers. Isnt it wonderful?
- djpray2k, on 02/25/2009, -5/+3Nice idea, but obviously a geek project and not worth the money.
- isunktheship, on 02/25/2009, -6/+4Sounds like the usual Apple business, living in the past.
- Rivfader, on 02/25/2009, -7/+3What's a newspaper?
- idontevencare, on 02/25/2009, -7/+2But will it blend?
- FSkip, on 02/25/2009, -6/+1This is such a complete waste of time and resources.
- derpaderp, on 02/25/2009, -13/+2"Who says newspapers are obsolete?" - anyone else realize that the stand is DIGITAL
