- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+164From “Ask the Pilot” on Salon.com:
“What you see is the perfectly safe and legal application of some heavy-duty aluminum bonding tape, called “speed tape” in the mechanic’s lexicon. Depending on what a plane’s maintenance manual stipulates — according to the dictates of the FAA — certain noncritical components can be temporarily patched with this material, embarrassing as it sometimes looks. It’s extremely strong, durable, and able to expand and contract through an extreme range of temperatures.” - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+140It aluminum tape, not ***** duct tape. Completely different with completely different uses.
- MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -5/+105The use of Duct Tape would make me feel MORE secure, as we all know Duct Tape fixes everything, including 747 Jumbo Jets.
-Mike - kuj007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+101I'd prefer to see William Shatner on the wing.

- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59It's dead, Jim.
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60its the 'tape' part that scares people.
- UrsusMorologus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54When i lived in the Bay Area, one of my drinking buddies was an engineer for United. He'd tell me about the speed tape, "for cracks and stuff." Kind of freaky, but it makes perfect sense really--this is very strong, very flexible stuff, specifically designed for high-speed, high-altitude uses. It's been field-tested for decades, and has proven to be more than adequate for minor patch jobs where the skin would deteriorate without some kind of protection.
The alternative is to ground every plane whenever any minor surface condition appears.
I trust the tape. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51It's speedtape, it's used all the time here in the states. It looks like there may have been some widening of a joint on the leading edge and they taped it up till the plane gets home. No biggie.
- Jagdhund, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52@form3hide
How the hell does Bush hatred make it's way into every discussion.
This is not a political topic, go troll elsewhere. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+53Its still *****' tape repairing a *****' plane. How is seeing someone repair your plane with anything other than metal make you comfortable?
- UrsusMorologus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31"How is seeing someone repair your plane with anything other than metal make you comfortable?"
The tape is metal too, it just comes off a roll, that's all - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28We called that "100MPH tape" in the service.
- ShakeWell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28ahhh duct tape, is there anything it can't do?
- FoxtrotUSAF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26We use plenty of speed tape in the air force. The guy that wrote this article should have done his home work before writing anything.
- kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I was in the same situation and the plane crashed because the wing flew off.
So I'm dead now.
By the way, heaven is so overrated. They have fiber-optic internet here but it's capped at 3mbps!! And porn is censored … thank you Mormons!!! - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24"...one of my drinking buddies was an engineer for United."
*Note to self: Dont fly United Air." - gootdude, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30@stan205 and amandaw33
So pretty much since you don't understand something, you'd sit there and tell competent people how to do their job? Also, making a scene about it will just cause everyone else to be delayed, and would further prove that you're an idiot. - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16If its good enough to use on my windows to stop Antrax and other biological goodies, then its good enough to hold a wing on an airplane!
- amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27Might be no biggie in retrospect but I would've been going nuts if I was on the flight
- JBSherman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Dell's Technical support team doing fixing aircraft? Good job, now back to the call center!

- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I hope not, considering planes go just a little bit faster than that.
- hipstershaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I don't think it's duct tape. It's some kind of tape, but just past the half way point you see a paper backing fall from the guys hand to the ground as he is preparing the tape (or what ever it is). Duct tape does not have a paper backing to be pealed away before use.
Probably not a proper and safe repair, but I don't think it's duct tape. - halavais, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Seen this on a Delta flight here in the US. They were taping a panel beneath the cockpit. Figured it was kind of funny, but I have faith in duct tape, so wasn't too worried. Now I'm even less so!
- briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Taking the Red Green approach to the wing I see.
It's the handy-man's secret weapon ;) - SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They are using what we call in the Air Force speed tape we use it all the time, aircraft pannels are allowed a certain number of rivets or screws to be missing. If they are missing and there is no time to fix it or we dont have the proper hardware and the pannel is loose we will speed tape the pannel to keep it from comming off. The tape is very strong I have seen a bird strike put a hole in the leading edge of a wing and the hole covered with speed tape.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Mr Rockabilly, is aluminium a liquid or some sort of plastic?
- toddhenkel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It wasn't just the taping alone that would have me uncomfortable (which I bet most of the world who doesn't fly or fix planes would be bother by too). It would have also been the manner in which those guys worked through the problem.
Don't digg me down for sounding prejudiced, but those guys were swarming the wing like a bunch of managers. No one seemed to be the one guy who really knew what to do. Lots of observers, but no experience... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73mbps? thats still faster than my adsl.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uhh, Lately I'm seeing Made in China Electronics products have better quality then anything made in America
Also, Indian Air Force suppose to have better Top Guns then US Air Force i hear. - Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Was that Dhaler Mhendi repairing the plane? Oh how the mighty have fallen...
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A new low for Digg comments.
- Jonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now I'm not a structures guy, Im actually in the avionics (electronics) field, but depending on where the crack was, I doubt its critical, meaning the wing wont fly off. Certainly better then leaving it and the stress points free to spread. Another thing they can do, again depending where the crack is, is to drill a hole at the bottom of the crack, which stops it from spreading.
- 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8digg for crappy 4 hour stephen king movie reference...
- bobsil1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"on a Muslim run airliner."
That's gonna be news to 82% Hindu India. - Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Heh, although they didnt really look very "engineery" lol, what with their shirts and trousers, they looked like the airlines executives getting together to fix the plane!
- Justice101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't even get me started on "Nuclear Grade Ductape"!
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, but it does remind me of the episode where someone didn't read the other comments before making a comment of his own.
:) - anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Red-Green approach to airplane maintenance (if you're Canadian you probably got this)
- ZeroArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I demand a Bumper sticker with that.
- rzebram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you weren't being sarcastic. In which case you also forget that windows are transparent and you can have the camera lens close enough to the window to not see the edges. Further, there is indeed a window edge visible, lower-left corner about a minute in. The audio track is taken from within the plane, they're "sound resistant", not soundproof. This explains every wacky conspiracy theory I've ever heard...
If I hadn't seen so many comments that should have been sarcasm on Digg, I would attribute this to an excellent piece of parody right away. - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10"I was aboard an Air Deccan flight from Bangalore to Mumbai...looked out my window and saw a group of guys repairing the wing with some sort of duct tape. There ’s some more repairs to the left of the one they are working on with what seems to be the same technique. Crossed my fingers, tossed back a shot of Black Label, and stayed on the flight"
That is complete and utter BS. If you watch the video he was never on the flight! The video was taken from outside the craft on a raised platform. and most likely as some sort of official video.
a) There is no video cutoff from the windows. Plane windows are oval in shape and would definitely be visible in the video. Clearly, the video was shot from the planes exterior.
b) the audio track is clearly from outside of the craft and from a slightly elevated angle on the planes right hand side. If you've ever been on a jet aircraft you'll know that the fuselage is quite soundproof. Especially those of a commercial aircraft.
c) A passenger would most likely not be able to get to the videographers location. If you've ever boarded a plane from the tarmac you'll know that you board from the planes left hand side, not the right and there is no way they would have let a passenger walk around the tarmac and climb up on a platform to video tape mechanics making repairs.
d) maintenance crews are typically done with any inspection/repairs prior to allowing passengers to board.
I'm not disputing the events on the video. I am however disputing the factual accuracy of the bloggers writeup. Personally, I think the guy is a bald faced liar.
He didn't witness this, nor did he have a "shot" of alcohol on a Muslim run airliner.
Hell, even if it wasn't, drinks aren't served until cruising altitude is reached.
So if he lies about this, why trust him and if you can't trust him, why read him.
turbanhead.com just got added to my hosts list as a 127.0.0.1 domain. - writerboyVSgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"There's something on the wing... some.. THING!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Maybe it's just me, but I don't particularly like visiting websites named things like "turbanhead.com."
- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn, it's not like they were taping the wing onto the damn plane.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am an airline pilot and that is speed tape, and totally normal. It doesn't actual structurally support anything but is used to cover things etc. and is a great product and a normal repair. I suspect 10-20% of airplanes flying right now have some speed tape over something on the body at any given time. I can understand how it may look concerning but it is entirely normal.
- turbanhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The domain name was registered by us before fcuktard racists could do it for themselves. If you bother to read the rest of the stuff on the site, you'll notice that we don't take ourselves too seriously. Sarcasm people! Sarcasm!
