- damonlab, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19WARNING - A CRT can carry a charge even when the display or system is turned off, and can build up a secondary charge after the power is removed.
These areas of a CRT can present a shock hazard:
* Anode cap and connector
* High-voltage cable
* Yoke assembly
* Flyback transformer
* Any exposed soldered connections

- rjgrel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12it's spelled monitor
- StarmanDXE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Then turn your fish tank monitor into a mineral oil submerged computer!
http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php - DeathJux, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Step 1: Severely injure yourself after CRT implodes and then hugs your face with shrapnel love.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Prophet - t3714, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I sure bet the fish like the toxic phosphors...
- DigTheDoug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Its a shame you have to become a prophet in the 3rd step, that might be difficult.
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The no fishing sign is tempting me to fish.
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Turn your fish tank into a CRT monitor!
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7i like the hamster cage version of these mods
http://beconfused.com/images/2004/07/Closely-monitored%20hamster.jpg - wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7PROTIP FROM EXPERIENCE: DO NOT ATTEMPT WITH LCD!!!
- SlantyEyes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Thats not a fish tank... hes just watching Finding Nemo.
- aceonline, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Do I even need to point out the spelling error in this one?
- ThatsNotPudding, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think this one is still in alpha.
- dataset, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Please tell me that's a sly reference to his "Property of Jesus" shirt.
- carbonetc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you actually care about your fish, there's more to it than just making something that holds water. Some construction materials the average person would grab off the shelf can easily be harmful over time (e.g. caulk containing chemicals to ward off mildew). And who knows what was inside that casing. At least try to wash it out.
- heythisismyname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I turned mine into garbage!
instructions will follow.... - zaren, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Better still with a "Classic" Mac and a handful of zebra fish for that black and white effect :)
As documented and designed by Andy Inhatko, god of Mac geeks:
http://www.billyrhythm.com/macquarium/instructions.pdf - AnotherThought, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a password-protected screen saver, you cant fool me!
- Devrdander, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3First thing I thought of when I saw this, this is extremely dangerous if the monitor was plugged in recently.
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3An old Packard Bell monitor! I had one of those that had a long 640x480 life.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4iMacquarium:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/46238378/ - bwilliams80, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3old :( i only have CRTs. cant justify purchase of LCDs until the CRTs die which is never it seems
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If you had half a brain, you would have at least used a TinyURL.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well... I have one less monitor now :p
The CRT is all one solid piece of glass. When I was trying to get a workable edge on the front half I cracked the screen...
Good thing I'm a well-paid software developer so I can afford things like fish tanks without having to build them on my own ;p - compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4buried due to this being a highly dangerous stupid thing to attempt
- Nitro420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That tank is much too small to keep a goldfish. It is borderline cruel.
He should have put a beta in it instead. - weirdlookinguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They never will. CRTs were made to last, unlike LCDs.
/Typing on a 7-year-old Philips that kicks LCD's ass in every way possible. - jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lucky you said that
- brown705, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2CRTs are out, man. They are too bulky. How about making an ant farm out of an LCD?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Unless you have REALLY flat fish.
- bobcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The point was the URL.
- lateralus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that's not a life worth living.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This way you can upgrade your fish to look like this: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i305/lale_01/SimpsonsBlinky.gif
- gmallard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Duct Tape
- schlongmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The old beige Mac Classic or SE works really well. There are tons of tutorials on the interweb to show you how it's done.
http://lowendmac.com/compact/macquarium.shtml - origclubsoda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Three exclamation points? Somebody just crawled out from under a rock... they have been doing this for over 20 years.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They take out the entire picture tube you stupid muppet!
- Blizaine, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7actually, you making fun of someone else because of what they believe in, wins you the douchebaggery award
- graderguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I suspect that the majority of Digg readers must be under the age of 20. The macquarium is OLD stuff.
and of course, it was done first on a Mac.. D'oh !

some more macquarium pix http://www.applefritter.com/image/tid/114 - beavioso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't you mean errer? [/quack]
- takamalak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeah, you keep telling yourself that "techmaster".
- weirdlookinguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What brand was the tube in that monitor? Looks like GoldStar but can't be sure.
Am I the only one who misses old-school CRT tubes? - Tetraca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"You know, just about every time I look at a computer case left on the side of the road, I think that that would sure make a great booster seat for my kid."
- capellathestar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I totally got that.
that was funny, dude. :) - rouslan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was expecting something like "Turn your Old CRT Computer Monitor Into A Stun Gun" but I realized not many people here would have known that the anode of a typical color monitor would have 30kV of power.
- stonewaljacksn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I totally want that shirt because of the pure hilariousness of it. As far as you go xerikx, blizaine pretty much hit the nail on the head.
- Tivor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I like the "Mac SE into fishing tank" thing better.
- Anoniedigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Here's MY computer aquarium. Much easier Mod and a 24X7 webcam to keep an eye on it! http://www.wozcam.org
- Skanadian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Moniter. Dugg.
