instructables.com — Talk about a great screen saver! I've been wanting to do this build for a while now. Just about every time I see and old CRT computer monitor by the side of the road on trash day I think to myself ...that would sure make a cool looking fish tank. So here is my first attempt at turning and old computer monitor into a fish tank.

  • damonlab, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19WARNING - A CRT can carry a charge even when the display or system is turned off, and can build up a secondary charge after the power is removed.

    These areas of a CRT can present a shock hazard:
    * Anode cap and connector
    * High-voltage cable
    * Yoke assembly
    * Flyback transformer
    * Any exposed soldered connections

Some construction materials the average person would grab off the shelf can easily be harmful over time (e.g. caulk containing chemicals to ward off mildew). And who knows what was inside that casing. At least try to wash it out.

    The CRT is all one solid piece of glass. When I was trying to get a workable edge on the front half I cracked the screen...

    Good thing I'm a well-paid software developer so I can afford things like fish tanks without having to build them on my own ;p
