- Popdmb, on 10/19/2007, -0/+91The three websites listed:
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
The article adds nothing useful otherwise. - JarekB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22www.broadbandreports.com also has a fairly large listing of speed test sites based on location broken down by country and state.
- cfdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@ TheGuruStud:
I really like speakeasy's speed test too:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
it works well for regular cable or dsl users like myself. I'm on cable through Time Warner and can regularly get above the 10mb downrate but not above 11mb. I think that is the max on this test anyway. Beautiful UI though. - Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I hope by "fairly accurate" they meant to say "completely innaccurate and unreliable, even according to the disclaimers on the speedtest sites themselves."
- MxxCon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10and yet your e-penis is still so small
- caryw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Speakeasy speed test page if by far the most accurate and popular.
Type "speed test" into google and it will be the first result. Google's Pagerank is a far more accurate measurement of the "Top 3 Internet Speed Test Sites" than some likely paid-for advertising my some about.com contributor.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ - notbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yeah, Speakeasy is my favorite.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ - MxxCon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6cnet speed test is HORRIBLY INACCURATE.
it uses plain text transfer with javascript timer.
speakeasy, dslreports, speedtest.net and http://www.google.com/search?q=web100+speed+test are the only accurate ones. - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have always used http://www.testmy.net and always will.
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Pah! Puny earthlings...
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/5910/641153321fr2.jpg - MystaMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, speakeasy.net's speedtest is the same as speedtest.net. Speedtest.net is created by http://www.Ookla.com and then licensed to speakeasy.net. They are listed as one of Ookla.com's Premium customers:
http://www.ookla.com/speedtest/gallery.php?type=premium&id=0&shift=+1 - godares, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also like this one http://internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/ it gives back alot of information about your connection
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you're in the area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada the best is:
http:\www.storm.caspeedtest
Might work well for other areas, who knows. Doesn't have all that flashy flash meter crap. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd have to say http://www.SpeakEasy.net/Speedtest is my favorite. The other one that is nice is the WI RoadRunner one. http://speedtest.wi.rr.com The RoadRunner site allows you to select the size of the test file and do upload and download tests separate. It also saves the results of multiple tests and allows you to look at averages, etc.
When I worked for Time Warner Cable and had to do fiber testing those two were the only ones I could hit the full 100Mbit with. I have other internal testing sites I did 1000Mbit fiber testing with. Can't post those links. All the DSLReports.net sites suck. They're always overloaded and always inaccurate. - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Well now that we have the meticulous research and unassailable expertise of "about.com" putting its endorsement behind these sites, I consider the matter settled.
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I prefer - http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ or - http://st.tstools.co.uk/
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're definitely not the best speed test sites anymore.
- brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the digg effect can take down these sites!
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using SpeakEasy.net for my speedtests for a while.
Just ran SpeakEasy along with the 3 in the article, here are my results.
SpeakEasy: 5337 down, 470 up
SpeedTest: 2375 down, 408 up
AuditMyPC: 4216 down, 542.4 up
CNet: 1695 down, no up listed.
SpeakEasy seems to be the most accurate compared to what my ISP records/reports. I don't know how you can say SpeakEasy and SpeedTest are the same, SE had twice the download speed at ST. - zobcat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why is this being dugg so much? These speed tests are horrible! Speakeasy really is the best. I guess I'll digg this just to keep speakeasy to myself and a few others.
- magic6435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+112/14/2006 12:03 AM GMT 14932 kb/s 362 kb/s 48 ms
- 0o0o0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I worked on speedtest.net. Speakeasy and Speedtest.net use the same servers for some cities. We (ookla, not speakeasy) created both tests, but speedtest.net is more of an international broadband project where Speakeasy's speed test is just some US locations.
I am surprised the Speakeasy speed test wasn't mentioned in that article. That speed test is very very popular.
Also for those concerned about us providing inaccurate results from the digg, we can handle the digg effect! speedtest.net already got hit hard by digg (in the top 10 diggs of the year! thanks diggers!) and we weathered that just fine. We did get a few phone calls from some NOC admins that morning though.
"Hi, are you guys being DDOS'd?"
"no, we've been linked on digg" - botmfeedr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2speedtest.net is speakeasy.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp
but I do think speedtest.net is best because of the links even though its speakesy just dressed up - orvl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, right on. I have found internetfrog.com's speed test to be the quickest, most accurate, and most reliable.
- billblaskey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh, the age old game of "my tube is bigger than yours"
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whackly, ahahaha..exactly.
- wheresmysocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Argonne National Laboratory, FTW. Sure, it requires Java but it does seem to give more accurate results than C|Net and the others I've tested. There's also other testing sites listed on their website.
http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ - jcf129, on 10/29/2008, -0/+0100 Up, 50 down RIT
- adam116, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0I've got 9 849,98 kbit/s / 1 058,39 kbit/s, ping 13ms and stability 89.3 % on http://www.bandwidth-test.net/
Speedtest.net counted me a little less but still enough.
- nissegurra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got 55000kbit on my closest node, Malmö in Sweden but only 6000kbit upload. My connection to my apartment is 100Mbit up and 10Mbit down. Pretty decent but I was actually expecting more on my upload.
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i like http://www.dslreports.com/stest

wish I had this at home - benji1974, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anybody use toast.net? They have multiple servers to test from for downloads only. But have seemed to be fairly accurate.
- tdawnaz, on 04/05/2009, -0/+0http//:www.testmy.net is the one I use...it's absolutely the most accurate...some of those others test me out way off scale...the numbers look great but totally not accurate. Kinda like vanity sizing...and I hear that isp's will recommend that you test at one place or another that will boost the results...but maybe that's a rumor.
testmy has a no frills test that is on the money...great community. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.iptab.net Test your Speed here !
- BloodyNub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2THE ABSOLUTE BEST way to see what your bandwidth can top out at is downloading something from Microsoft. Their servers JAM packets down your throat. I like using windows 2000 service pack 4 because of its large size.

Just be sure to be ready to hit 'Run' or 'Open' quickly so that IE doesn't give you a false reading. Even so, it will even out over time. - cclapper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk
- CA3LE, on 06/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.testmy.net/ is the best out there
