- yathosho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4some things to agree, some things to disagree. drinking beer makes you tired and your body dehydrates. drink water, chew gum, make sure it's not too warm and that you have fresh air. i agree that music can stimulate you to become more productive, but it depends on the kind of music and the volume you listen to it. more bpm or "unusual" frequencies exhaust you much faster and i can imagine earbuds have the same effect, besides not being too comfortable.
- MyNameIsFred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He glosses over some of the risks of being a consultant. He recommends it for the young, and points out the positive such as 50% more pay. However, he glosses over the fact that consultant aren't part of the company's health plan or retirement plan. While the young may be able to avoid health insurance, compound interest quickly shows that you want to invest for retirement as early as possible. The best decision my wife and I made when we got married was to live on one salary, and invest the other. The first couple of years were tough, but the dividends are paying off - pun intended.
- jeznav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Same here... I spend so much time reading articles on digg and I always endup coding around 1am. Sigh..I cant resist getting new information...
*Unplugs cable modem ........5 mins later ...... Plugs it right back* - AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I completely agree that meetings should be avoided at ALL cost.
When the person running the meeting doesn't know what they're doing, as is often the case, it's a total waste of time!
Of course, it probably depends upon your line of work, but if someone knows how to make these things worthwhile, PLEASE share your secrets. - briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to agree on the productivity at night thing, I find myself doing everything at around 2 in the morning for some reason :S
- retsoced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with working disconnected. Although I keep Outlook open all day, I turned off the pop-up and audio notifications. I also wear a set of Bose QuietComfort headphones (they freakin' rock too!) - this enables me to get a vast amount more work done (especially in the morning) that I would otherwise not be able to do. I wind up checking my email around every hour or so, and it works pretty well....
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish I could convince my boss to let me drink beer while at work... that way when I had some tough code or a PC that doesn't want to co-operate I could just take off my shirt and say "I'm right here. What are you going to do about it?"
- Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The suggestion that you quit a job you arent happy with shows a slight arrogance on the writer's part. To correct the article, it should say, "If you are not happy with your job, find another similar position BUT DONT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB". Also the beers at night (since I work on my own projects at home at night) has been invaluable to my happiness. Productivity...eh I guess I keep working on the projects so it must be working for me :-)
- xterminus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While playing music with a high bpm may physically tire you out faster, I find it helps me focus and get into 'hack mode' http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/H/hack-mode.html and stay there for far longer. Many of my most productive hacking sessions were sustained with simple coffee and a huge playlist of trance or techo playing for an extended period of time (6+ hours). Also, by focusing on the task at hand, its easier to ignore the physical symptoms of exhaustion.
Healthy no. Conducive to coding - hell ya. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beer also has a lot of calories. 2-3 beers a night sounds to me like a sure method for gaining unwanted pounds. Also, just a personal preference, but I like to work unfettered by anything that could affect my ability to think things through clearly. Of course, just being tired can have a negative impact, but why push it?
- Ikioi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would make a change to one part: "Work on open source late at night, with a beer on your desk."
Should read: "with a beer in your beer hat and long straw in your mouth, so that you don't waste time taking your hands off the keyboard to drink your beer."
This applies to coding as well as gaming. - malec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2good read
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do you stop reading email when its the primary mode of communication mandated by your employer? (and doesn't everyone work late at night?)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Work production and happiness is an oxymoron. Nevertheless, the best tip for combining the two starts with A and ends with cid.
- StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1he's right about reading to learn about anything you want. i just acquired the "sams teach yourself (whatever) in 24 hours" books -- were not cheap, but worth it.
sams teach yourself php in 24 hours is awesome and so is php hacks or ajax hacks. the for dummies series is also helpful.
using old technology to get good at new technology - pankaj23183, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0"Work on open source late at night, with a beer on your desk" I love it
http://www.futurismtechnologies.com/ - jadahl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It can be nice to work between 23:00 and 5:00.. it's dark outside so the sun wont reflect on my monitor and I can walk home and here the birds sing. Though it's sad to miss the first half of the day due to sleep, so might not be worth it :/
- bstack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1take shots instead
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Oh wow 127 diggs, front page, but with TWO comments this must work really well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Now if only someway you could make working at a grocery store excited for a 17 year old guy ;)
Jeff - http://jeffeh.com - syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3go steal a chocolate bar or something, it will give you a cheap thrill. just don't make it a habit though ;)
