- brownb2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Installed it but I can't see a damn thing on my Ipod shuffle. :)
- plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Is that an encyclopedia in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? ;-)
- tacojohn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Well- at first I thought that you could install it on any iPod, and then I saw the stupid install directions.
Step 1: "Install iPod Linux"
Screw that. - jalefkowit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Story summaries with not one, not two, not three, but four exclamation points: Digg at its finest.
- SteveDeGroof, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The only thing missing is "DON'T PANIC!" on the cover.
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Download "English Wikipedia (753 MB)"

Im now the smartest pub quiz cheat.
+DIGG - Pyfco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Best Pub Quiz cheat system ever :)
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6thought 1: Sweet... +Digg
thought 2: Install iPod Linux...Bah... -Digg
thought 3: All of Wiki under a gig, in my pocket... +Digg
thought 4: doesn't work for 5G iPod... Bah... -Digg
but then I realized... it's not this guys' fault you have to install iPod Linux or that it doesn't work on 5G iPods. It's a cool tech story.
so for me ++DIGG thx boza111 - mindmatcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jmmccorm - Something similar for the Palm OS at http://infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/index.html - I've used it with great success. Downloaded the whole of Wikipedia last Sept onto a 1GB card. See now though that the book has grown to 2GB (text only). Would make finding the memory a bit more of a challenge. It's been totally amazing to carry the whole thing around in my pocket.

"Though I hate ipods and anything to do with Apple..."
This completely reduces the validity of your opinion to approximately ZERO. This is just as dumb as an Apple "fanboy" (now even I am starting to hate the term fanboy) saying that he hates "Micro$oft" and anything to do with them.
Juvenile.
Considering an iPod purchase... need to start saving the nickels and dimes I find on the street. :-) This would be a very cool thing to have on an iPod, save for the Linux install. But I only say that because I am completely clueless about the Linux install on iPod. When I regularly used my Creative Labs Jukebox, I had a dual boot OS on there, and that worked fine, so... I could see this working out pretty well!
Because I am a lazy bum, I'll just ask here... what happens to your music library upon Linux install? I assume you have to wipe the iPod... how is iTunes integration affected (from an OS X point of view, specifically). - chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or, you could just go to www.wapipedia.com on your phone.
its only text (like this project) so the data that you download is relatively small. - galahan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People, for the windows install at least, it install's iPod linux for you. Next, next, next...
Then just load in the wikipedia of your choice and it's good.
Now all we need is imdb on the iPod and let the kevin bacon game roll. - shawbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It won't work for my Nano. It says the installer wizard doesn't support my ipod.
- feenikz4180, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone please make a TORRENT out of the downloaded file...
it'd be much faster that way for everyone - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1opps forgot to ask...what about updates? Do you just have to reinstall the entire thing again to get any wiki updates?
- Sweener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Aww wont work on 5g??
- portos12, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1This is awesome.
http://www.bestipodtips.info/ - inthe80s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this didn't require a dual-boot situation, with the fairly large amount of music data on wikipedia you could even have it perform a search of the database based on the performer name. That would pretty nifty.
- Big_E103, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does this work with other mp3 players?
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is fantastic. Hopefully when Sony's E-Reader comes out, someone will develop a version for that. I would much rather have an encyclopedia on the E-Reader than on an iPod.
- tmibiker2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2swell
- midorigin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have the entire English language Wikipedia on my pocket pc. It's amazing to be able to have all that information available everywhere I go, and has turned out to be tremendously useful..
http://infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/ - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is really awesome.
"Step 1: "Install iPod Linux"

It's not that hard.... there are plenty of HOWTO's out there.
And, you can play Doom with it, too. - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there something like this for Palm?
- beta1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well- at first I thought that you could install it on any iPod, and then I saw the stupid install directions.

I agree, they should find a way to do sometihng like this with the notes section in the regular iPod firmware like iPod Bar-tender!!!!! - heyitsmedusty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as far as having linux on my ipod, is there a possibility it will wreck it? i have a 60gb 4G ipod, and i'd like to have wikipedia on it, but i'd also like it to not get wrecked.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dmr182: Zero. Absolute worst case scenario if the iPodLinux installation fails is that you have to manually put the iPod into disk mode and use the Apple iPod Updater to restore the normal firmware back to the thing (which will unfortunately erase it in the process).
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kewl! i have a brickpod (1G - 8 gigs)....i can finally make something useful out of it!!!
DIGGGG!!! - dmr182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What are the chances that by using that Installation Wizard to install the iPodLinux I will end up killing my iPod?
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03Den: HTML? No. XML? Yes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Download - Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried this. The install went pretty smooth. When my 3rd gen 30GB boots into Linux the contrast is turned to max... one click down, enter, one click down, enter then wheel to the left. I like the fonts used, very clean and legible. Too bad I have to boot to linux to use it. Otherwise I think this will be pretty useful next time a friend breaks his collar bone snowboarding and I'm stuck in a hospital waiting room for hours with nothing to do.... I can now read Wiki...
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think this is all that great... cool that someone pulled it off and compiled all of Wikipedia... lame for the fact that it's on an iPod and would be just "a bit" better on a PocketPC/Palm/PDA other than your iPod. What's more, it doesn't support all ipods...
- NickD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason the iPod platform is practical is because there are so many of them out there. There are way more iPods than PDAs out there.
One solution would be to have all of the files in the notes format in a zip or tar file, and then allow the iPod to just read this single file. Or, to have several files, each in a different category, and then update each category periodically.
If anyone has any more ideas like this, you can put them on my wiki at http://www.suggestions4ipodanditunes.com - mserna23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I installed it. Followed directions. And now my iPod locks up when rebooting. Sucks.
- Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one more thing... for some reason the *epidia file got a .txt appended to it when I moved it to the library folder. You need to remove that.
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0some1 put linux on their 5g and tell me how it goes.
- Vortexmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome :)
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0404: This isn't using the note reader. It's a custom program using it's own file format. It doesn't load the whole thing into memory. Much faster than the craptastic iPod note reader.
- Homez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the not found errors: when you go to enter text, it enters a space automatically, so delete that space then search, which should sort you out. :)
- nushxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is honestly one of the niftiest things I have seen all year. It works perfectly on my iPod, and it is a chunky black and white 20gig. Everything I have searched for has come up, even my school. Installation was a breeze. Worth buying an iPod JUST for this. Very Happy :]
- Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0argh... it's *epodia.... I need to get back to work.
- jlawson1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but ask yourself, Why?
- shovel10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0curious: how many times are you actually going to read it?
- Homez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn still won't work with searching. I've tried emailing the maker, no reply, and there are no dedicated forums so here's my only place for support. Heres what happens: I type in ipod in the search bar inside the ebook, and I get a not found error message. Surely someone can help!
- phly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got it working well on my 2G mini.
What's the best way to update the articles? - prthealien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linux iPod? Wish I could undo a digg.
- hackman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks, works great on my 4th gen. nice! very handy.
- Rekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Homez, my dataencyclopodialibrarywikipedia_en.epodia file is 789 817 404 bytes and works perfect. Check your location and file size.
