- reaper, on 12/05/2007, -0/+26ill probably just duct tape a 160gb external hdd to my screen.
- KewlerKid3, on 12/05/2007, -1/+22Soldering to a motherboard takes balls & a sturdy hand.
GG & well done dude. - rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -1/+11Ouch that's bold! I would do it if i had two though....
- NatashaCall, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11The guy's a genius!
- polywaffle, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9Well the fact that you can have more internal memory and other devices?
- Alex.w, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Do you have a 20GB Eee with built in bluetooth?
- ridestp, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Yes, also on eeeuser forums. http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1775. Also, it is 1.8" not 1.5". And no, it doesn't effect battery life that badly.
- flamingmb, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7That would also take up your sd slot. When you do it this way you have more storage and a free sd slot which can add even more storage.
- directive0, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6To say I "really care" may be a stretch. But I'm certainly impressed with their ability to find the traces and help someone with a mod such as this. More impressed, anyways, then I am with your ability to make sanctimonious and pretentious comments on the topic.
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -2/+7The could easily put in a 10" screen and keep the exterior dimensions the same. The huge black areas next to the screen are not necessary.
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5I don't know how people go about figuring how to do stuff like this, but when I get my Eee PC, I will certainly be following his lead. I really like his decision to go with USB ports rather than hardwiring. Great flexibility, and future-proofing.
- Juaquin, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Possible, but it would kill the battery life. HDD's suck power with all that unnecessary spinning.
- goobit, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Was that a real question or did you just ask out of stupidity?
- gsmithEIDW, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Larger screen would probably require extra brightness to cover the same areas therefore higher power consumption and less battery life.
To maintain same usage you'd need a bigger battery which would be heavier. Plus the black areas around the 7" screen also provide less of an area to get damaged and this would make the unit less durable.
Also larger screen would probably be more expensive too. One of the most important features of the Eee PC is its low price. - EBFoxbat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+41.5" HDD don't suck battery life like a conventional 2.5" or 3.5" drive would. They're different beasts.
- EBFoxbat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Or some type of mask and liquid solder, either way, props.
- scabbers, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I would ***** this up so badly. It would be worth making a domain and videotaping it for epic lolz.
- blackb0x, on 12/05/2007, -3/+7why not just spend $130 and get a 16GB SD card, then create a linear software raid?
That would give you 20GB without messing with a soldering iron. - flamingmb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5I am wanting one of these things more every second.
- bdbr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4The EeePC isn't the first or only sub-notebook, but it is a lot less expensive than the others. Doesn't modding it with a bunch of expensive flash defeat the whole purpose?
- AICkieran, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Or...you know...over USB like majority of portable 2.5" hard drives are?
- thugok, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3My head hurts.
- mllawso, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3He didn't mess with the flash hard drive, he just added another drive for document storage.
/Btw, CF and IDE use the same protocol, they just have different connectors. Hence why they sell CF to IDE adapters. - flamingmb, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3They have already said they are not making a 10" version. It would cut batter life and if they kept the same form factor there would be no room for speakers which sit on either side of the 7" screen right now.
- dehemke, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Very impressive. This is making it harder to resist ordering one.
- flamingmb, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2but that would defeat the purpose of an ultra-small laptop.
- meed, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Has someone modded a Eee to have one of those mini HDD (1.5 inch?) that are generally used in portable media players like ipods and zunes?
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2You're right but what blackbox said is a good choice too.
- EBFoxbat, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3You should (maybe) click on the link to see the pictures. Then, you'd likely not have to speculate and risk making an ass of yourself.
- TacticalPenguin, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Good job to this guy but I think I'm gonna go with reaper- duct tape my WD passport to the screen.
- Myonosken, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1No. It's the whole purpose of it- cheap but user upgradable. I want a cheap laptop for web browsing, no problem. I want a portable storage device, no problem, chuck in another £50 and it's still only £250!
- colto, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1 The black areas next to the screen hold the speakers though.
- Elranzer, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1What do you think the SD slot is for? Not being taken up by SD storage?
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1The hardest solder job I've ever done was on a PS2. Those traces were incredibly small, and I bet the ones on the Eee PC are even smaller. This guy's obviously pretty good.
- baldgye, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3i want one so bad, im just gona wait for the 10" screen version
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I don't know who is digging you down. That's the reason why I want one and I do have a HP Pavilion dv2423 but the laptops have gotten to the point where they're not portables anymore...
Other choices are some 11'' laptops from Sony or Dell but they are expensive as hell. - chesscat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Wow, maybe now Vista will be able to launch in under five minutes.
- EBFoxbat, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1How you plan on powering that? Car battery to the bottom for symmetry?
- EBFoxbat, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1The clear answer to that is to change the form factor. A slightly thicker case with a larger battery would be fine,
- MikeCerm, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1I imagine it's not worth the effort. If the internal storage were currently something IDE based, it would be a plug-and-play affair. However, if the internal storage was just a CF card in disguise, I imagine that the guy who did this mod would have just purchased a 16 GB CF card and swapped it.
The internal storage is probably just NAND on the motherboard, with no IDE header is readily available. If that's the case, it would be impractically difficult (in addition to serving no real useful purpose). - madeinbrazil, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Creativity and being smart does wonders!
- mydave, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0good work. guy's genus.

mirror - goobit, on 12/05/2007, -4/+3I think the 7" is why it's worth having one.
- insomniac8400, on 12/05/2007, -3/+1Nothing funnier than in the comments via the link when other people are chiming in trying to take credit for the mode. Sadly, they think people really care who figured out where the unused usb connections were. Buy a real laptop.
- PrettyAngels, on 12/05/2007, -16/+0I fear the virus more than wants the computer which has tall speed
- BagginsBoy, on 12/05/2007, -20/+0I'm not trying to be critical, but was there a practical objective to doing this?
Or was it just for the sake of saying it's been done?
