Temperature-monitoring case mod for the Wii
nintendowiifanboy.com — Evolving from the designs of Team Xtender's past mods, the ii-Hot Rock case aims to do more than just light the Wii with colorful LEDs.The $62.95 shell comes equipped with a digital thermometer that displays the console's internal temp, and the LEDs shift with that measurement. Every 5 ° change pushes their hue towards either a colder or warmer glow

- mikev, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9i'd be lucky to get a wii, nevermind this :(
cool nonetheless - Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Wiis over heat?
- ujjwal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I want one for my PC! Tellme tellme how to make it, I already have the digital thermometer/LCD display part working. So are these LED's which can somehow have voltage dependent colors? If so where can one get them?
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5So if they don't overheat, then how is this a useful mod? It's like having a temp gauge on a lawnmower engine.

- SmackMyMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Jesus Christ! That Rivals most PC mods I've seen lately.
Glowing Perfection.- Detritus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30I agree, it is a lot cleaner and interesting than most PC mods...
But am I alone in thinking it doesn't look as good as an unmoded Wii?
Come to think of it, I have more than just a little emotional attachment to my little white box after spending a cold morning in the snow waiting for mine. It would take quite a lot to get me to tinker with it. - fruitblender, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Detritus:
I agree completely. It was many mornings I spent in the cold to get mine, I'll at least wait until my warranty's up.

- 10001110101, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Not so sure how I feel about the green & blue.. It may have looked better if they could somehow fade from blue to red.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20You don't mean...
My God... PURPLE? - HsoKinees, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1PURPLE FTW! >_

- digitallysick, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2Wii lube! keeps your wii from getting to hot.
- redrock34, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4The case looks great, but the temperature monitor is kinda useless. What are you gonna overclock your Wii so it can play the standard Wii game?
- FunkyPits, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Wasn't there issues with the GPU overheating and causing damage? And actually yes after looking it up, it does overheat and cause damage to the GPU occasionally while in standby mode. Although if its standby I am definitely not looking at it so I guess point taken.
- FunkyPits, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Get buried for posting a true statement gotta love digg. ***** you assholes anyway.
- alex.will, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Sweet! Now all I need is some good games.
- Supernova36, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8A smart plastic case that changed color accoring to temperature would be pretty sweet.
- xevidentx, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4wtf is the point of this?
- MikedaSnipe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2To piggyback off the first post of this, i agree, wtf is the point.
Look, i can see temperature guages on computers, but personally i would go for a software one. But for people that want flash, whatever, they both work. I could see the LED's that changed the color of tap water by temperature, in my opinion, i wouldn' t mind that as a standard. But if your Wii is overheating, what benefit can come from that information? "Oh jeez, it's time to put it back in the fridge"? the 360 is already hogging the fridge (the power brick takes up the freezer.)
It is quite obviously pure novelty, but hey, i still would buy the overpriced crap at disneyland, so who am i to judge?
I would prefer a red-purple-blue system anyhoo.

- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Why would you need to monitor the Wii's temp? I doubt it ever overheats with its low-powered processors..
- ydt89, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11It could overheat, just set it on top of your 360. ^_^
- Sarzec, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Actually I keep my wii on top of my 360 no problem...there would only be a problem if you had them both on...
- n8r0n, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1When in standby mode the Wii gets very hot. I am not sure why, but it gets pretty hot. It is pretty common.
I am not sure which gets hotter, my Wii is standby mode or my Dish ViP 622. - GoldyFish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It gets warm on standby mode if you have wii-connect24 on, its only the wireless chip getting warm, due to no fans running in standby. woudln.t say hhot, just warm
- Tainek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1My main question is, will the LED's work in a UK wii?
- n8r0n, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Nope. You need PAL LEDs.
- benitojuarez, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3So are people overclocking their wiis or something? This seems quite pointless.

- Beerduck, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1And I buried you for not knowing how to read. That one was posted 6 days ago compared to 19 hours for this one.
- footbag01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I want one for my 360... I've had to return one, and now it's out of warranty.
- morningmatters, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Not sure why you would need something like this.. It's one thing to have a cooling solution for the PC because of customized hardware and overclocking, but that's not the case with consoles. If this device is proven to help consoles to last longer then it may be worthwhile, but I think most consoles issues have more to do with defective parts than overheating.
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Obviously your blissfully ignorant of the state of game consoles these days. The Xbox360 has a frequent problems with overheating and certain circuit boards and solder points melting from lack of adequate cooling. The Xbox360 has 3 processors in it and the PS3 has 8, in addition to all the other parts, so they consume and generate as much as, and often more heat then the average PC. PC's are mostly empty space these days and in fact many PC components are going fanless because they are becoming more energy efficient and have more space to dissapate heat. Consoles are densely packed with heat generating electronics.
Granted, I think that the game console makers are opting for style over functionality, ignoring heat problems in place of fancy boxes so there SHOULD be no point for extra cooling, but try and tell a buddy of mine that has returned his Xbox360 3 times and knows his 4th replacement is about to go that extra cooling isn't required.
I will agree that there is no need to mod the Wii, as its the most energy efficient and least likely to meltdown from all the current gen consoles, also the mod looks like *ss. - clackerd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0"Granted, I think that the game console makers are opting for style over functionality"
i dunno, i think that because of the hi-end (read: hot) equipment in today's consoles, mfrs are restricted in design moreso now than in the past. i think of how much open space there was in older hardware (8 and 16 bit machines especially) and feel that designers back in the day had a little more liberty in the styling of their console. the last two generations of consoles feel like they are stuffed to the edges with junk, have less ventilation, and therefore run hotter. i agree with you though, the wii really doesn't need this mod, but the LEDs sure are cool.
