- noelsusman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39It will automatically restart in 2 minutes if you do not respond to the window.
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44Step 4: Profit!!!
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -21/+45Here's my tip.
Step 1: Click "Yes" to reboot.
Step 2: Go see outside world for 3-5 minutes.
Step 3: There is no step 3. - ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26FTA: "Oh, I almost forgot: this setting is only loaded when Windows starts, so a reboot is needed."
Classic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I shut down the service if it's really annoying and then start up the service later.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Yeah, that is the most annoying thing ever created in windows. Imagine working at a 3 days render, only to have that ***** kill all your work (it didn't happen to me, but it's possible).
Because of that, I completly disabled the auto update system. - Rush123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This is great because for it always comes on when i am playing games.
- Frieked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Or you could turn off automatic updates and just update every patch tuesday like I do.
- pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You don't need to restart for the sttings to take place...
Run gpupdate.exe /force - BillyEveryteen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Those dang update tooltips are probably my main gripe with Windows. Microsoft needs to look at how Ubuntu does their system updates.
"Your system has been updated with the latest kernel. We recommend restarting your computer, but honestly, you can keep chipping away at that gynormous porn download 'till it's finished. We'll just leave a tiny, unobtrusive lightbulb in the notification area to remind you that you can restart your machine at your convenience. Peace." - romper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@gfw123: I have that same script as "shutup.cmd" =)
- petbeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10what happens if you're in the middle of something important?
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14When Apple Update does an update that requires a reboot I am not given the option. The stupid "restart or shutdown" window stays there until I do reboot. So far it seems only Linux has the option to install updates and only restart services which were updated... unless of course the kernel is updated.
- nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great idea, lets just make the window invisble so we have no idea why the hell the computer restarts three minutes later!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It bugs the crap out of me, I lose work and my vm's get "powered off" without saving their state, and then when I get back from making a coffee I discover I have to reopen my vm's and all the crap in them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You won't be able to do that if it's a group policy setting in a domain. But if it's a home computer yeah...
- xilexl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8good idea for an xp pro machine, now what about home? :(
- Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually Vista has that now, a few options from a few minutes to 4 hours, iirc. Could be done in a patch for XP but hey, they don't wanna spoil us now do they ;)
- inkyblue2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5good tip. i've been using my universal trick in the past on this: go to task manager, attach a debugger to the process, and hit "pause." (yes, you need a debugger.) works on everything-- even those nasty spyware processes that live in groups and restart themselves faster than you can kill them. debug+pause = deep freeze.
- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it just me, or is Digg's comment system completely screwed. eg. Not being able to edit comments, replying to the wrong post, not being able to post certain characters...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is equivalent to taking tylenol to quell repeated headaches.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sometimes your ability to edit comments in digg.com seems fickle. Basically, I found the solution for including backslashes (use two), so my second post has the correct registry change.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6See, if they were smart, they'd have an button at the bottom of that dialogue box asking "Configure Frequency of Messages" or something like that. Anyway, thanks dweeb. That's definitely the most annoying thing about XP to me.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Thats not the only thing you can do while in gpedit.msc. Don't like your recycle bin? Toss is out.
Check all the screens, tons of cool stuff in there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I didn't notice at first, but digg removed all my backslashes, so the above WILL NOT WORK. is there a known work-around so you can publish backslashes in comments?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001 - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is stupid, you should just set your updates to download but not install and then install when you can reboot. Installing and not rebooting leaves some files patched and others unpatched putting your machine in an unstable state. That's why it nags you so much.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Don't install it when Microsoft asks you to agree to the WGA EULA (it has its own license because of its spyware component, and you can just click disagree to that one license).
- gfw123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Easiest thing for me (using cygwin, use whatever is good for your shell)
alias nonag='sc stop wuauserv'
Then I just type 'nonag' when ever it asks me to reboot and I don't see a thing until
I turn is back on or reboot. - kyrre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@xutopia,
This is from memory:
Apple menu -> Force quit -> Software update -> Really Quit
Or so. I agree that it is pretty annoying. - DarkSorrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it really annoy when im in BG or raiding.
I was ready to throw the entire computer out of the window and hope a semi-truck ran over it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3shamanking, Does not work on Windows XP Home. Thnx for the tip.!!
- uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5all of what you've mentioned can be configured if you know what you're doing
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2funny, i just instaleld OS 10.4.7 update and the nag window to restart your mac can't be minimized... sure i can work forever, but it's always there..
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Umm this isnt working...
- deleteYourslf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another possible workaround would be to only check for updates on a specific day and time - I always have mine check for updates on a Friday evening while I'm out partying or having dinner - seems to work out fine.
- CoreBurn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't mind rebooting so much when it's for an actual security update, that's one thing. But for a stupid Windows Genuine Advantage update that needs to reboot like today? That pisses me off!
- jesseroo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love you for this...this always happens when I'm playing WoW or talking to someone online, so it's not as easy as just rebooting...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I did something similar by changing the registry. Just copy the following lines into a file called NoReboot.reg (make sure there's no .txt extension) and double-click the file. You can also google for this key FFI.

"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001 - TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You can still use the trash functionaility, it just hides some of the icons from the desktop, for those of us who prefer clean and empty desktops. Same with Network Places and My Computer. Also theres a lot of performance options in there if you look deep enough that can provide some nice system enhancements.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you know what functions the service provides? I'd assume that if Windows tells you it's needed, it's probably needed, and just because you think it *shouldn't* be, means nothing.
You can enable the service at the Automatic level and set it to not download or notify you of any updates. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You remind me of Ronan Harris of VNV Nation when in his DVD of future perfect in one song he tells Tom. Tom? Hello?, Could you get this guy off the speaker, get this guy off the speaker.
@ArcaneDevice Hahaha you make me laugh, too bad i just buried your comment by mistake - skartel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh thank god, my friends have a running joke when that pops up, we just look at each other and we know. No words need to be spoken.
My laptop is connected to a corporate network so it has to have automatic updates and that windows annoyed the crap out of me! Thanks! - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh...why don't people just ctrl-alt-del and kill wuauclt or whatever it's called? that's what I normally do.
actually, this reminds me of this one time when my astronomy professor was trying to give a lecture. every couple of minutes the damn thing wouild start counting down, and all the students would be like "hey doc watch your computer!"
naturally, my professor got very pissed. at the computer and the students. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For me is ok to reset my computer because I always reformat my computer every 3 months, the bad is I have to reinstall about 45 to 55 updates every time y format. But maybe I have a sollution, install Windows Vista Beta 2 as my main OS, with this Beta Version I will get Updates for free until Christmas, when I will buy my original Certificate of Windows Vista in a shopping mall.
The guys that complain about Microsoft Windows WGA Program should follow my advice. - Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It was not the fault of the computer, it was the fault of the operating system.
- chandrasonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I used to get rid of this problem by suspending the Windows Update process with Process Explorer but this solution is what I was looking for.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The ultimate irony would have been if this tweak requires you to restart the computer for it to take effect.
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1start - run
regedit
hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowswindowsupdate
delete reboot required folder
reboot when you feel like it - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks! "No auto reboot with logged on users". Hm. It really takes Microsoft to DISABLE that by default. :-S
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a really simple and yet great tip, its unfortunately that a lot of the power of Windows is buried in Group Policies that make no sense to no one! :)
