- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Ubunto? What the ***** is that???
- Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Damn. The amount of Linux distros grows exponentially. Ubunto!
/sarcasm off - coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets see Debian-based distro's boot in under 30 seconds to KDM login WITH dbus, hal, acpid, udev, vmware, jackd and powernow goodies loading and the latest version of everything running stable. And where is Debian's user-controlled package repository and constantly up to date official repo's? And where's the Debian system that's 100% i686 optimized? Every distro has it's place, and Arch's place is on 4 of my desktop systems, my laptop and my server. ArchLinux FTW
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You dissed Amarok. Prepare for a major burying.
You also basically said that controlling your music with your cellphone is better than using the Wiimote. More downdiggs.
Have a nice day. - JoCliMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And why not just map it to the right button on the d-pad? Somethings are cool, but impractical. This is one of them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*likes the xmms* its like winamp, old skool winamp those were the days
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the general idea (Using the "Wiimote" as a controller for various things on a computer) is still intersting.. A more "useful" way of controlling a media player would be to press a button, then the further you move the remote, the further it skips on in the song.
So you could hold [a button], and draw a circle with the remote, and it would cycle though the song.
You could also use it in a gesture system. A full-screen display of what your drawing, you press a button, and (say) draw a > symbol, and it skips forward. draw a L shape, and the volume goes down 10% etc..
As for XMMS being dead - If people are still using it, it's not dead. Sure, Amarok may be, erm, a newer program - But not everyone may like Amarok, and may be happy with some other program. Just like people still use Winamp 2, even though there's a version 5 now..
Besides, I'm sure it'd need very few changes to convert the script to work on amaroK, or banshee, or mpd, or most other music players..
Anyway, it's a cool proof-of-concept, but it needs something more, like a gesture system before it is anymore appealing than a standard remote
- Ben - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1XMMS is still frequently used.
But Amarok pwns all. :) - ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some of us still use XMMS because Amarok is a bloated piece of garbage (and buggy as a M$ product to boot).
As for this, yeah, it's (kinda) cool, but hardly earth shattering. I've been controlling my music with my cell phone via bluetooth for a couple years now.
Of course I don't get the pleasure of looking like a tool for shaking the remote at the computer, but hey, everything has it's drawbacks!
-olly - orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what's next? Obobtu? :P
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Nameless
Debian and Debian-based distros > all
ArchLinux loses. :( Poor you... - Lafftermath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The idea of shaking my wiimote...
kinda makes me giggle. - jrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah................ or you could just press a button on the wiimote....
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Come on, XMMS died a long time ago (Gentoo doesn't even carry it anymore) :)
/me should hack together a script for amarok once wiimoted is done - swooshonln, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I saw "linux" and "xmms" and immediately came on here to post that, haha. Yeah, xmms still works, and its still around, but its dead. There are talks about "xmms2" but ya know.....
- grinin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A video woulda been nice :(
- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1xmms isn't dead some of us don't want the extra bloat.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It sounds like a nice proof-of-concept step. XMMS and AmaroK have heaps of plugins which make use of phones and various peripherals, but this is just a little pointless. It's too easy to mistakenly change track and too much 'work' to change it at wiil (sic). Here's a better use for the Wii in GNU/Linux:
FlightGear + Wiimote
,----[ Quote ]
| With thanks to WMD, you could use the Wiimote under Linux fairly easily.
| For those who don't know Wiimote talks to the Wii console via bluetooth.
| So it works with any computer with bluetooth as well.

http://pigeond.net/?cat=flightgear&comments=fg-wiimote - mousy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Or you could just use a music system, I'm sure the remotes aren't too different.
- Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Its probably some lame Linux distro. Use ArchLinux :)
