- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Noise cancelling headphones may have been cheaper...
- BiggPa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it would have been better to do watercooling..
OR, just buy a new case with 120mm fan slots...replace the CPU hsf with a zalman, northbridge with passive
for all the screws, put on rubber washers
he even could have just put in the dynmat (or whatever it is called) for the same results... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hate it that the answer is always... buy a mac. but, most have no fan... the rest are a whisper. ;)
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you can hear your PC, your amp isn't loud enough.
- ChrisPikula, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To all those saying "Just get longer cables and stick it in a closet!," well, here's a question for you: Do you like interference waves on your monitor? Did you know that they start showing up after about 3-4m? And if you do, how do you get rid of them?

I have that case. After a few months, the door hinge snaps (very thin plastic) and you leave the door off.
:) - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do some people make such a big deal about fans and computer sounds. I DON'T GET IT.
In that case, I think some cars are wayy too loud and I want to put a stop to it *gets to work* - dstart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quietened!
- deadpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0with all that fuzzy stuff... seems like it's gonna be a nightmare to clean the inevitable dust out.
- miwunderlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why not just stick it in a closet across the room?
- Enendar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame, i can barely hear mine when nothing else in the room is making noise. once i turn on music, tv, or play a game i cant hear it at all... i think its just a waste of time
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As I read the background and detail of this guys website, I cant help but think of Napoleon Dynamite's reading it.
Yesssssssss. - mcpaige, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he is not going to want to try and clean that thing when it fills up with dust and junk..
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Waste of money and kinda pointless.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a lot of trouble just to keep your PC quiet. Meh. I don't have this problem. Some extension cords here, some 802.11g there, and my PC is in my closet, well out of earshot.
I bet my $10 cords was cheaper than whatever the hell he paid for that damn minifridge. - Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's missing two things.
1) external usb / firewire ports
2) External access to DVD burner
to go to all that trouble and then have to open the door to insert a CD/DVD is kind of silly. But it still gets a digg for extreme soundproofing! - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the whirring sound of my PC.
- pigster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has more value than a case mod post.
Personally, I've always prefered doinmg paperwork in the server room. The sound of all the fans is soothing. :P
dugg it. - cuntface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.silentpcreivew.com
this is also ***** old. - Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of work and thought, but a little to much insulation because of all the heat it is trapping. When he said that he had to open the front door when playing games that just ruins the premise.
Other alternatives. Go water cooling. If you don't want to risk water cooling then go silent fans. The market for silent fans would have fit every one in that case (I have a twin of it) and will drop the sound quite a bit, and been cheaper. - Emptythought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you know whats funny, i bought a 5u server case with no fans in the front(intake, exhaust, everything is in the back).
can barely hear it even when its totally silent at 3am, cost $20 on eBay and took about a half hour to stuff all of my parts in it.
and I'm willing to bet its quieter than his insane setup, and it takes up less space too. ha ha - bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. I just shut my door.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Single Zalman cpu fan on 1 ghz celeron running linux in a big old-style server case with fanless power supply. Can't here it above normal house sounds. Quiet is beautiful.
My old computer made me feel like I was living next to jet engine. My quality of life has improved. I was into this before people cared. - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I started to look at his design, I knew this thing was going to run hot.
You can't put a computer in a box with minor ductwork and expect it to breathe.
His so called "cold air duct" is still sucking in room temperature air and expelling the air into a void. On the same side of his box you have another fan sucking air out. The two fans on the box are exchanging air and very little is actually making it to the computer.
He would be better off just having a fairly powerful exhaust fan and eliminating the intake fan.
This guy gets an A for effort but an D- in real world usability.
If you read the whole article, he admits that he wouldn't recommend anyone else build anything like this. He also admits he has to open the door for gaming or the motherboard will cook an egg. - TheDeadMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you idiots could READ, you would find out it was an experiment... and the final result was...
"Will I recommend building this kind of case to anyone? No. Find out better way to quiet down your computer. Buy a passive sink for graphic card, or shift to water cooling. This project takes too much time. The plan is easy to make in half an hour, but building takes half a year, like I did. No, really, too much time. If you're not a masochist or you own a workshop, where you make these kind of projects as a hobby already, I don't recommend to anyone. :)"
Morons, open your eyes.. and stop whinging. - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually wouldn't like to have a silent PC.
I _need_ the whurring noise of my PC's fans to be able to go to sleep at night, I can't sleep without it. - erissiva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bottom line - Will I recommend building this kind of case to anyone? No. Find out better way to quiet down your computer."
Heh... - driedwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always asked myself this question.. why do PC modders work so hard to make their PC's quieter but Car modders work to make their cars louder.. kinda strange.
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why do some people make such a big deal about fans and computer sounds. I DON'T GET IT.
In that case, I think some cars are wayy too loud and I want to put a stop to it *gets to work*"
Some people's hearing hasn't degraded to grandpa levels. They still have pretty good hearing and the wurring noise of the fans irks them.
The reason people don't complain about cars is that these days they're pretty quiet unless you're driving a muscle car or work at a construction site.
If the noise is too distracting, just do what I did. Stick the pc inside the wall. - keltx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy put a lot of thought into his design. If this were a built-in feature of a computer desk would you consider getting it? I might.
- stanleyfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just wouldn't want my computer that quiet. If I can't hear a jet sound, I'd be worried that my PC's busted.
- robsonde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not a dupe but a bit the same.
http://digg.com/hardware/A_slient_web_server - anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Or, get a Mac.
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I give him another half our before his site dies :)
- dizdaz89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My computer makes hardly any noise. That might just have something to do with its sucky-ness though. I too need some sort of noise to concentrate cant stand things to be really quite.
- dna42fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...If you can hear your PC, your amp isn't loud enough..."
Nice... - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The computer sounds keep me from getting lonely though.
- Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh...It kind of bothers me at how some people are so obsessed with how much noise their PC makes. Personally, I don't give a rats ass, just as long as it doesn't sound like a damn Harrier jet taking off.
- Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got my two main case fans hooked up to speed controls on the front of my PC. Until now they have always been at max...after reading them I decided to turn them down, and guess what? I can hear the birds chirping outside....maybe having a quiet PC is important after all.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just use noise asorbing foam:
http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=982 - Jeppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok....Ok.....Ok......
How about you just put a couple of 120mm fans after cutting larger intake and output holes for your new 120mm fans and then put some of that black sound proofing rubber like material inside your case....I did that and my pc runs cooler....and you can't even hear it running. Not to mention....IT IS A COMPUTER! IT MAKES NOISE! DEAL WITH IT! - Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what a waste of time
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what a load of crap.
buy longer cables and stick the computer in the closet.
