- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17That's because you aren't sure of what you're changing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21I think the existence of the registry is ridiculous. All these system configurations are buried away in an opaque file that spyware authors just love. Microsoft, with their obsessive devotion to letting apps from 15 years ago run, will never let go of this thing.
- obijohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Comparing the Winders Registry with *nix /etc is obviously the result of a little knowledge being just that: little knowledge.
The Registry is designed to store an application's settings that are themselves designed to be modifiable only by the application which created and uses them; it was never designed to be edited humans. True, it CAN be edited by hand if you are desperate enough, but doing so is considered hacking and might be dangerous to your health, not to mention sanity and eyesight.
The /etc directory, on the other hand, is a convenient location for *nix apps to store their modifiable configurations, almost all of which are text files, well-documented, and designed from the get-go to be edited by hand. Install the new version of Whizbang and want to tweak a setting? Without even looking at the man page I can almost guarantee you that I will find a configuration file in /etc/Whizbang that contains what I'm looking for, and is as easy to edit as "sudo vi /etc/Whizbang/config". - Daychilde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Looks cool - but it would be many times better if there were comments describing them... Sure, some of them are sufficiently obvious, but I'd be more comfortable if someone had taken the time to write up each one... and I'm a geek. I'm digging it anyway... :-)
- linus7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ahh...I was wondering when this site would be submitted. Definitely...a great site...but let me warn you all. I used to use this site all the time with different clients and jazz...just trying to set them up customized and running smoothly, but it wasn't until the day that I found good 'ol Kelly had a spyware program on his site. I remember it was under a Data Recovery tool...and supposedly it was a great freeware tool that recovered any "Empy TrashCan Data" or "Shift Delete" data..but to make a long story short...the program was definitely there and sweet...but when scanned next day or two...and did online research...program was full of spyware (opened up machine to spyware as well...). Again...just warning for you all. That was the only problem I had, and everything else was great...just be wary of those .exe's you download. ;-)
(*Edit - could be either one of these possibly....or else it was removed.)
(Both are linked from his site...)

Ehm .. I prefer /etc - nucleocide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Microsoft has a powertoy that does it. Here is the direct link to the exe:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/CmdHerePowertoySetup.exe
I think you have to right click in the folder to get it to work, meaning executing cmd by itself doesn't default to the current directory. - SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14bonchbonch:
So, what, the /etc directory is better? The /etc directory is just like the Windows registry, except every freaking file has their own wonky, arcane, and oft-undocumented format. - stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I had to "view this page in IE". I don't know what the problem was, but I think firefox might have problems opening really ugly layouts lol.
- grunties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used to do lots of this kind of tweaking but then found all sorts of weird bugs would appear in my system. I would advise people not to go overboard with these hacks as the Windows registry is a fickle mistress...
- tweakr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5opened fine in FF for me.
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Bah White on black my eyes!

- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If I'm going to screw up my registry I'll do it the old fashioned way. Its a great idea to backup your registry being playing with it whether manually or through scripts.
- djnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3can someone pick out the top most useful ones? most seem like a user preference thing
- nucleocide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2imo, the poorer the designer usually means a better coder. right brain vs left brain.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That page looks hideous, but it's got great info so I'll digg it.
- s14sh3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I couldnt open it in Firefox, either. I can get to the main site, but not the tweaks...uber weird.
- comeonpriitk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone know how to make cmd start in the folder you are currently looking at? Like in win98 with command.
- supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2holy ***** yes. i had to stop reading. maybe that's because i'm running off 2hrs sleep and have a splitting headache though

http://registry-cleaners-soft.com/ - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good, but a lot of real basic tweaks. Plus a lot of those type of tweaks are in programs like System Mechanic, which is a lot safer then actually digging in the registry itself. Also a site with a lot of other good tweaks (and a layout that looks like it was done after 1995) is http://tweakxp.com/ .
- DevilDogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was having problems opening it at home, but at work it works fine. Must be an extension I have installed at home that's causing the problem. Weird.
- flashmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I approve.

- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1another very good site for registry edits: http://www.winguides.com/registry/
i've found TONS of great edits there. - Joey67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My friend's ide hd was set to PIO mode by Windows. There was no way to change it. The interface option "DMA, if possible" (I have the dutch version here, at work, so I can't be sure of the exact option name) simply refused."
Actually I've seen this happen when using the wrong IDE cable. I probably can't explain it as well as someone else here... but lower speed IDE devices can use the old IDE cables... high speed (like most modern hard drives)... need to use the ribbon cable that has twice the number of wires. The plugs are identical and unless you pay attention, the cable doesn't really look much different. If you're using an IDE cable from say a CD ROM drive... in all likelyhood, you're not getting full throughput. I'd be surprised that a registry hack would allow that though. Typically what happens is it starts out on in DMA mode then eventually drops to PIO mode (for reasons mentioned above). This problem drove me absolutely nuts. - DIGGADEEP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1..this one is the best of the mall thou :)
- DIGGADEEP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i swear i see these type of articles on the front page EVERYMONTH!!! ...noobs i tell ya!
- nwoolls, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"My friend's ide hd was set to PIO mode by Windows. There was no way to change it. The interface option "DMA, if possible" (I have the dutch version here, at work, so I can't be sure of the exact option name) simply refused."
That's because his drive had been failing and Windows automatically lowers the speed to try to reduce the number of read errors. The registry hack you used undoes that, which you shouldn't to begin with. So, the Windows registry if flawed because you undid something that was done for a reason, and it was what? Too hard? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2yes o god yes i had to close my eyes fr ten minitus
- osaeris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Really bloated old fashioned HTML, You wouldn't be messing with my registry. Even if I did have one.
- Haiyadragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not to burst your fanboy bubble but the drive is fine. It was fairly new at the time en it still runs at full speed without any problems whatsoever. Full disk scan revealed flawlessness.
Nice conclusions, without any base whatsoever. I guess you're one o' them "power users".
Too hard? Nah, too crappy. - method77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1a much needed list for all XP users. 10 diggs if it was possible
- DevilDogs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dugg, but did anyone have problems opening this in Firefox? I just got an "Untitled" page, with nothing in the URL bar. Opened fine in IE. Weird.
- Haiyadragon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3My friend's ide hd was set to PIO mode by Windows. There was no way to change it. The interface option "DMA, if possible" (I have the dutch version here, at work, so I can't be sure of the exact option name) simply refused.
I had to change some obscure reg value to make it work. This leads me to conclude the Windows registry is flawed. No such flaw in /etc. -
