- tito13kfm, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10The LED array is an impressive idea that I have not seen taken to that level before. I'm just not understanding why he didn't at least put them in a simple reflector, there is so much wasted light with his design.
For those wondering how this works. A basic projector design goes like this. Light source, Fresnel lens, stripped LCD, Another Fresnel lens, projector lens triplet. The light goes through all these components and on to your wall/screen. The image quality is only as good as the quality of your lcd and lenses. - mym6, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8I'd like to see the image these things throw to really decide. There is a reason why projectors cost as much as they do. They're getting smaller, quieter and more accurate, which probably cannot be said about these. You can't deny the cool DIY factor though.

Its pretty much the same as the first paragraph of the article, where it talks about "8" LCD screens from cheap DVD players" and "dead AV equipment". None of which can be made into "high-definition ghetto machines". - antdude, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2"find"

- BoneheadFarker, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Lumens means *nothing* when it comes to growing. Lumens means how bright a light source appears to the eye, not how well the plant will absorb the light. Though the LED crowd does have some detractors. Rather then the 1'x1' panel covering a 10'x10' area light the distributors claim, in reality it only covers 1'x1'.
I honestly think that LEDs will eventually overtake HPS or MH for growing. Which will be cool since I've always wanted to experiment grow food indoors in a "Bio-Dome " sort of way. There was this Canadian message board for pot-growers (don't remember the name any more), and there was a war going on between people who believed LEDs could be used to grow pot, and those who thought it didn't make any sense.

Any screen from a portable DVD player is going to be at most 480 pixel high, and very often less than that. That would be "SD" video. "HD" BEGINS at 720 pixel high. Any projector made from a "trash" DVD player screen can deliver SD quality video.
A junked computer monitor with a resolution of 1280 x 768 CAN be made into a video projector capable of HD quality video. - UnstableMind, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Yea, I wouldn't call these trash, most had to purchase the screens, bulbs, electronics, mdf, paint, etc... to build these. thanks :) - davidrools, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1not hard just expensive. each diode costs around 25 cents to a couple bucks depending on size, power, quality, etc., if you were to buy them new. otherwise it would take a whole lot of trash to collect that many!

- ats314, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1i was obsessed with lumen labs for a couple years like many people. Homemade projectors aren't really cost affective anymore. The forums there have shown drastic decrease in discussions lately.
- HerbSolo, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Just that somebody sells it doesn't mean it will work on a large scale. The LED-Arrays sold at that time were pretty useless. Growing basil and parsley won't be that much of a problem, but the usual high pressure sodium lamps those guys are working with are quite impressive, when it comes to Lumen per Watts.
The Lumen/Watt ratio of the Na-Lamps was actually better, but the theory was, that much of the light isn't used by the plants, so LEDs would have a theoretical advantage because they emit light in a very close spectrum, but there were good arguments against that theory as well.
I checked back every few weeks, to read the newest rant for or against LEDs, and it was brilliant. People dug up NASA-Patents and *****! It was a sad day when they closed the board, it was this peephole into the pot growing underground. - BoneheadFarker, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1There are actually several LED grow-light suppliers. My idea is to stack 2 panels in series and drive them with the same signal to obtain fantastic black levels, illuminate them with LED arrays, and fold up the optics into a tight little package.
