Tell me how you think this is an intelligent comment for your little assignment? seriously. And compuwarescc has a point. You joined digg. It USE TO BE a tech related website. This place is swarming with your so called "geeks"... - mDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Allwood = Student in eComm class assigned to learn Digg.
@Allwood
Digg Lesson One: Don't insult the natives.
I think your comment what an honest lay-persons view of geekdom. However your brother playing games on the interweb and being able to talk to some random person while doing it is hardly geek at all. - TriZz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@ AliWood:
- Your posting comments on digg. Calling your brother geeky - isn't that the pot calling the kettle "black"?
The force is strong with you. - mDot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14The problem with the PSP isn't lack of owners, its lack of owners who actually want to keep the think after the gloss wears off (figurative).
Sony's support for the device is lackluster at best, with most of their effort going into thwarting the efforts of home brew hackers who create awesomeness for the PSP. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If I were your teacher I'd totally fail you. Aren't you supposed to research us so you don't end up insulting us? 'Cause after all, if everyone blocks you then you won't get anything at all dugg.
- xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"He actually talks to them through the computer"
Welcome to the Internets™, circa 2006. Please don't clog our tubes with enormous amounts of material. - kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10...Ngage++?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@mDot... You're actually dead on. I bought a PSP the DAY it came out (preorder and all). It was cool, and I had my fun with it... but now, I barley touch the thing. I didn't even take it on my last cross country flight.
The PSP HAS "lost its gloss" to me, as I think it has with most owners. With Sony constantly shutting down homebrew makers and 3rd party programs, and games forcing you to make those firmware upgrades (and yes, I am versed on how to downgrade blah blah, but I don't like carrying around multiple memory cards), I'm seriously thinking of checking out the DS. - superterran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Holy christ, you guys are jackasses. She's doing a class assignment, let's try and be civil here. keep in mind that people like her are the ones that truely determine the tech curve that we all study like it's the holy bible. She's the one Apple markets to, she's the reason Linux will never make it main-stream, and depending on what she looks like, she's the reason I buy $500 phones and try not to use the word 'pwned' in public or mention that I bought a $2500 MBP because of Vista Beta 2 to anyone with a vagina.
So, perhaps we should let people like her give their two cents on things. Because they are just as, if not more, important to the advancement of consumer electronics than we are. That's right, you're all broke and buy the most obscure tech on the planet - nobody cares what you think.
Digg gets popular enough that's it's in school curiculum, and the first thing y'all do is flame the kiddies because they aren't 'geeky' enough to post here... like it's fanboy only or something. You guys are truely *****' brilliant! Next, we can block IE users from viewing the site, and require every new member to prove they play WOW before they can read comments... Because Digg is an elite club of dorks and mac users, and we can't let the n00b's in.
Remember... Kevin Rose is trying to make this mainstream... chill out. - kirk1978, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5to AliWood:
Woooooooooooooo "actually talks to them through the computer" ......
That's like... magick ....
that's way too geeky for me... omg......I don't think i can handle it!
to the story:
Well... first of all why.... if u are on the computer, you can "actually talks through the computer" .... and if u are not, u can use a phone or cellphone.. which is cheaper than a PSP + whatever chip.
and secondly, he didn't "developed a phone chip", he developed a (set of) telephone handling code, and LOADED on to a chip (most likely a FPGA). it's NOT on silicon yet, so he didn't "developed a phone chip".... - Clbck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"AliWood."
To quote mDot above: "Aliwood = Student in eComm class assigned to learn Digg."
She has to get stories to the front page (4 I think), and she's already managed 3. One of them she pretty much begged for diggs. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -32/+36Wow I'm sure all 5 PSP owners will be excited over this!
- agren757, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have a PSP and I think that...hold on....(soapbox)....its a prime xample of a product having all the potential in the world but nothing being developed to please consumers. The games are real good but think of how much better it would be with a full keyboard and mouse plug-in or a real GPS application. I understand that games cost as much to develop for the PSP as for the PS2 so why not devote more time to expanding the product beyond games.
Why, oh why, should the five of us who brought PSPs have to devote our time on creepy Frankenstein mods like this one when Sony could just get off their asses and lend a hand. Its really not that hard.
PSP could give the Origami a run for its money if they act right. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Unfortunately I think it did.
- musters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad to see there are still people out there pushing PSP mods out.
All I can say, is the PSP is the best thing for the tube/subway. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's a great idea! Someone should call make a VOIP app for the DS, and make it downloadable from this website: http://www.ndsemu.com/hellods.htm
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AliWood, talking through the computer is not "geeky"; it's a good way to save money. On those games you can talk free between players (as opposed to making an expensive 8-way call on a cellphone); outside them, there are good VoIP software (Skype is a famous example) that allow you to talk to "normal" phones in other countries for almost nothing, and to people who have computers free. If you have family on the other side of the world, this is REALLY important.
Now, if the people were right on the next desk, then I agree: this is geeky. I do that with my fiancèe sometimes... - MalumEnSe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Too bad this site is not the original source, but this one is:
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Lior-Wants-Your-PSP-to-be-your-new-Phone/pg/49/aid/62112 - superterran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@xpaladin
I live in a small town called Shallote, NC - I barely have internet access, there are no geek girls here. Hell, I work at a web design firm, and the women that work with me couldn't point out a modem from a line-up.
I'm not saying we should go around blowing in to these guys belly buttons, but first impressions are important, wouldn't you say? If we start maintaining the mindset that 'you have to meet some sort of arbitrary geekiness requirements to post on Digg', a social news site, then we are really hurting the community.
She uses technology everyday, her little brother even talks to computers and downloads books and music that clogs the tubes, just because she doesn't understand how it works doesn't mean that her oppinion is worthless. I'd argue that it would at least make it more valuable than mine as I'm biased because i'm saturated in technology.
Microsoft, for example, doesn't care what I want - I want IE7 to either pass the acid test or be replaced by Firefox so I can start using hover psudo classes or PNG transparencies today, and the new hottness next week. She wants frilly ***** like Aero glass and animated emotes. What gets done? You guessed it. What the non-geeks want tend to drive the market, so I don't see why having a few non-geeks comment or post stories is so damned bad. It seems to me that if anything, it would help us follow the trends and figure out what's coming up next.
Remember, Digg is a public resource, not a geek only zone. So I say again, Settle down. - gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Welcome to "Hooking a Cellular Module to a Serial Port 101"
http://www.sparkfun.com/
This dude built a cable and some simple power electronics (maybe used a max232 to interface to the serial too) And yet he can't even get his app to place a call? This means he can't send data to the serial port. Normally on the modules it's a simple matter of sending ATDT5551212 (just like a modem) This guy is getting a lot of publicity over being a very very poor programmer. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone want to make a VoIP client for the Nintendo DS? That'd be cool.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cease and desist letter in ....
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So you like type something you want to say and then throw it your friend to read it?
- mlvassallo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where did he mod that, the ship from Alien? What's with the damn strobe affect in the video...
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You people are all WAY off topic.
- specv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isnt something out of the ordinary, i remember being jealous of my friend who worked for a mobile company and he had a sony clie handheld with a GSM sim adapter and could make phone calls and go on the internet with his Pocket PC. If treo can be a hybrid phone/computer, why not a PSP. Look at the ngage, if it was a mainstream system everyone would have bought one.
Though implementing a phone into a current PSP may not be the best idea, the idea of a PSP 2 with built in GSM support could be a decent selling point for the kiddies. Throw a mini ipod into the loop and you have a mobile video, video game device, phone, mp3 player and a portable computer in a handheld portable device. I could see that taking off if it was well implented. Judging by previous attempts and other projects im sure it would be half assed and budget cuts would turn it into a POS, but conceptually be a great idea - quadracer111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow the psp is becoming a mini computer
- xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@superterran,
You should indeed use the word "pwned" in public in conjunction with the word "noob." Honestly, it gets well-deserved laughs and respect. And if the ladies hate it, they're probably high-maintenance prudes anyway. Geek girls for life, IMO, and a big lawl at anything less.
Anyway, if going mainstream means literally begging for diggs (check her history to see why people are flaming in the first place -- I did, and then reported all of her submissions as lame), then this site will going to go the way of Myspace. Remember -- in terms of net history, mainstreaming has been a decent concept, but it's always fallen apart when the noobs (or, in a more sophisticated tone, the LCDs) get involved. - Moosifer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't get it... I understand stuff like the 4gig drive thing.... and homebrew... but all this other stuff is lame.... I have a PSP.. I use it for games.... and maybe a quick email check if i've somewhere without a laptop that has free wireless.....
- rafaelcapanema, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This reminds me of Sidetalkin'!
http://www.sidetalkin.com/ - Pacotheparrot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Because now you too can convert your PSP into an N-Gage that plays music and videos.....
- saeche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0well thank heavens he recorded rock-steady video evidence on a fifteen-year-old vhs camera and then somehow turned half of the frames black, for fun
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3It makes me sad that a bunch of horny, lonely diggers have befriended her and fell under the wrath of Aliwood. Have some common sense. THINK FOR YOURSELVES PEOPLE.
- NetRoll, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It's not because you CAN do it that you SHOULD do it
Anyone really wants to talk over a PSP? - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wow, every day PSP becomes more liek and Ngage.

- themacx, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2make that 6 :p
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2At long last, a portable gaming console+phone that looks more dorky than an N*Gage! Awesome.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Why do people waste their time modding the PSP? It's good at games, THATS IT. It will NEVER be good at anything else.
