NES Zapper Mouse Mod
zerosign.net — For this simple mod, I wired a gyration mouse to the NES Zapper, allowing for both free range motion sensing and trigger happy left-click action. This is a very easy hack and will give you a fully functional (yet ugly) motion sensing mouse gun fashioned out of the old-school NES Zapper - a must have for any hipster kid from the 80’s.

- leadingzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First person shooters would be cool with this
- RatBagu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wouldn't that idea be similar to the Nintendo Revolution controller?
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The very same
- Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Joystiq put it on their blog: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/18/nes-zapper-plus-gyro-mouse-duck-hunt-emulation-heaven/
- awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, lets have a story with 4 clickthroughs. cool video though
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but then you cant play duck hunt. Duck hunt > computer mousing.
- sunnyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17i'm prepared for the negative diggs, but i don't find this impressive. It's simply a gyration mouse duct taped to the zapper, with the trigger swired to the left click lead. The gyration mouse already has a gun-like trigger at the bottom, so what's the point of going a step further and hooking up a gun to it?
And the gyration mouse (I own one and use it fairly often for presentations) is notorious for its lack of accuracy. The manual even suggest you temporarily disable the mouse cursor (via the mouse trigger located at it's bottom) while you click on a small area, such as a button. Great for power point. Not so good for small ducks constantly moving.- utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as for the trigger on the bottom, that is used to allow the mouse to move. When the button is not pressed the mouse is not active.
- sunnyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wanted to clarify something about the gyration mouse. The mouse itself is accurate, but holding it in the air with your arm and clicking the left mouse button naturally makes your hand move, and subsequently the cursor moves out of position. That's why the instruction manual for it suggest disabling the cursor movement temporarily while clicking on a button, to prevent the cursor from moving while you move your hand to click.
What's interesting is that Nintendo purchased the Gyration company and will most likely use its technology in the Revolution's new controller. Might not work with games that require precision clicking, like amining in an FPS, but should be interesting with actions like swinging a golf club or yielding a sword. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Negative diggs? you got +14 last i checked, lol, ur no Nostradamus
- LordPablo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9agreed, crap mod imo, no digg
- rimco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I whole heartedly agree... this is easily one of THE dumbest things I ever saw... I saw it yesterday and thought about posting it just to see if it'd make front page (and obviously it would have), but I didn't think it was digg-worthy at all... btw, didn't anyone else notice how he missed all the ducks? That's not really selling the idea either...
- pjsk8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2He did hit ONE duck, but I blame a large portion of that on luck. This "hack" could've been a lot better had he taken the time to try and make the gun a gyration mouse itself, rather than duct taping one to the gun itself.
No digg.

- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Damn thats stupid. That guy just basically taped a mouse to a NES Zapper.
Waste of a Zapper if you ask me. - coyforce, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2yeah stupid
- InsaneShow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At least he admitted it was an ugly mod. Cool concept though. This would add a nice twist to the home theater PC . . . or even better yet, for changing powerpoint slides in the boardroom.
- automagically, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can wire NES controllers to parallel, then get them to work as a joystick in some emulators. I wonder if it could have been as simple with the Zapper, just write a driver. Maybe there are already joystick drivers that recognize the Zapper when wired to the parallel port.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But will it work on an LCD screen....
Many people have LCD screens and Laptops. I wonder if the Light Gun would work then. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nope. Check the article where it tells you how the original zapper worked. Unfortunately they're not effective on LCD monitors.

"Many people have LCD screens and Laptops. I wonder if the Light Gun would work then."
What an idiot...it is not using light to aim. He is using the gyro mouse to move around and the fire button on the zapper is wired to the right click.
This mod is stupid. Waste of time and good retro equipment...yes the gyro mouse is now retro.- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Think before you start calling people names... Because now you look stupid...
automagically posted something about plugging an unmodified NES Zapper to the parallel port. tavisjohn replied by asking if the unmodified NES Zapper (the one using light) would work with LCD's. They weren't talking about this mod not working on LCD's.

- Rozal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's creative people like this who deserve credit. Digg.
- ImAtHome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He didn't even need to aim the gun right...
The cursor was on his screen.
No digg. - ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2psh why pay 20 dollars for a Nes with Duckhunt, when you can buy a 60 dollar mouse and play the rom!!!
- tonygarcia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is cool stuff
- krimsyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting! That's the cool thing about technology hacks, they don't have to be practical to be cool.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I was digg#666 OOOOOOOOO
Kick ass mod, btw. - gruz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not the best mod, but not the worst either.
- nonchallant0819, on 03/30/2008, -0/+0This is a great story... found this one through http://www.google.com
