Open Letter to Hulu and Jason Kilar
It was cool while it lasted. Hulu has made all videos unavailable on MyMediaPlayer2 in just 4 hours after the posting of this article. This is the 6th time that videos are "not available" for MyMediaPlayer in the past year. I have never been asked by Hulu to stop development of MyMediaPlayer, a change is made by Hulu and playback of video is disabled. The title of the article is "Hulu Gets An Unofficial Desktop App In MyMediaPlayer2", well I would like to ask Hulu to see if they could make it the official desktop player for Hulu. Or make it part of a labs section in Hulu, Youtube has "Testtube" why doesn't Hulu have something similar.
Here are my reasons why making MyMediaPlayer the official desktop player makes sense Users want a TV experience. Hulu.com does not provide that Users want to access Hulu with multiple devices - MyMediaPlayer is developed in the Adobe Flash Platform to deliver engaging experiences that run consistently across desktops, mobile phones, and consumer electronics devices. MyMediaPlayer is perfecly positioned to take this on. Users like the Hulu brand - MyMediaPlayer is very consistent with Hulu. MyMediaPlayer does one thing, it plays Hulu videos. It does not display videos from any other site. MyMediaPlayer is built in Adobe Air making it a desktop application which is far more powerful than the functionality a web browser allows. MyMediaPlayer has Twitter integration which makes the activity of your users reach a whole other audience .
Unlike the previous 5 times, I am not going to remove the download link from my site, I am going to continue to allow users the ability to download it, get frustrated and email you until we get some sort of feedback. You can email me at mymediaplayer.app@gmail.com. Jason all I need is five words "It's never going to happen" and I will port the player to Youtube.
I would like to apologize to the dev team at Hulu, obviously some folks had to work after hours tonight.
I would also like to thank Erick for writing a great article.

They probably have media center PC's in mind. I just use Hulu on mine, but with this simple interface I could see why someone navigating with a remote control on a true media PC could benefit from this program. Plus, it looks pretty slick.
Too bad the idiot corporates in charge of the content given to Hulu bitched and whined about Boxee having Hulu in their list of runnable stuff because it was just as nice if not better than this and it has all sorts of other crap in there alongside Hulu. - djphatjive, on 03/03/2009, -8/+22OR you could just go to Hulu.com! This saves me what? 2 clicks?

And yes, I'm still very bitter. - hadak, on 03/03/2009, -0/+10I clicked on a few videos (as shown by my full twitter list -.-) and *every* video was "unavailable"
- coheedcollapse, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9No, you're missing the point. Some people who have their PC's hooked primarily up to their TV sets and navigate with not a keyboard and mouse but a remote control have problems getting to and around Hulu. With programs like this and Boxee, they can literally boot up their PC, remote control their mouse to the program, and instantly have a full-screen and easily navigable interface.
I love Hulu just as much as you. I actually was part of the beta testing program and I've been with them since. I also think the interface is fine. What I'm saying is that some people in a specific group might find this useful. - absurdist, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9"I wonder how long it'll take Hulu to shut this down, just like they shut down the Boxee app."
According to the update on the site, four hours.
Bastards. - Otto, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8XBMC works again, but not on the original XBox's (which can't run Gnash yet to run SWF code).
Anyway, Hulu is dead to me. If they don't want me to watch their content, I won't. I just went back to downloading torrents. No problems here, and higher quality. Also, no commercial interruptions. The only thing Hulu ever had going for it was convenience, and they're systematically destroying that. - JonForTheWin, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8Hulu encourages "piracy".

Hulu encourages "piracy". - neokyle, on 03/03/2009, -3/+11looks cool, but the installation disclaimer is scary... "unrestricted" system access and "unknown" publisher. am i being paranoid?
- draxenato, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7We have torrent sites, we have free access to all current programming, in HD if we want it and ad free.
- clichecow, on 03/03/2009, -2/+8Why would you want to add this to outlook?
- Thomasaka, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6It was awesome for the single episode of Chuck I was able to watch before it got shut down. Crap like this makes me want to not use Hulu at all. I mean, the player leaves the ads in tact and there are no ads on their site that I'm "missing" so what reason could they have for not allowing it?!
- lewystud, on 03/03/2009, -2/+7someone actually invented a browser that can do hulu videos AND other stuff like the rest of the internet
- ralphthemagi, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5There aren't enough of them, and at the global level the only kind of campaign you can run is an awareness campaign.
Even a company like Apple has different product offerings, at different prices, in different markets and uses different strategies to talk to consumers in those markets. - amoore2600, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5Hulu, they told us they were evil.....
- redwire, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5If only there were global brands who could benefit from worldwide advertising. Some sort of multiple national company, a multi-national if you will, who could use such a thing as global advertising....
- kernel16, on 03/03/2009, -4/+8Local restriction for the lose.
- SteveMTyler, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4It won't stop piracy if piracy is still necessary in the rest of the world. I download 2 shows every week, I stream some on megavideo or dl on bittorrent. I wouldn't if there was a better option.
- ralphthemagi, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Everyone wants it, but I'll just go ahead and let you know why it probably won't ever happen. Well, it's possible... but not with the current model.
Mainstream media is paid for with advertising. Everything is still calculated based on impressions. Since *most* products are localized, it's really hard to pay for worldwide distribution. You have to find clients in each local market who are willing to pay you in order to serve up that tasty content. Advertisers wouldn't pay if they knew that half their impressions were going to people who can't even purchase their products, and if they geo-target the ads, some people will essentially get that content for "free," although it's not free because someone always has to pay—whether it's bandwidth, encodes or distribution rights.
The only real way around this is a pay service. - idiggeverything, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4No videos are showing up for me...
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+5Yeah, good thing no other major content provider in another country would do such a thing...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/help.shtml#live - knowmonger, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4***** Hulu for taking it down!!!!!
- ridestp, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4Media Center integration would be nice.
- maccam94, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3How about use XBMC instead? It has a Hulu plugin and has way more functionality.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Because reading all the way to the sixth comment to see that you're being redundant is so damn difficult?
- hadak, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4wtf, really? if you click the twitter icon once logged in, it displays your password in plain text.
- DigitalN, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3no. :(
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3An additional point - watch a few hours of TV and count up the % of ads that are awareness ads only. You'll see it comes to a fraction of all advertising sold.
- connordaniels, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Hulu's commercials about being evil are coming true.
- LiquidSpark, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Does this allow you to color correct the videos?
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+4I do not watch content on Hulu. I take that back, one time I think I did get sent a link to it and watched a 30 second clip of something. Instead, I download torrents of shows I'm interested in. First off, I want to make the distinction between Hulu and the content providers who own it and/or provide content for it. The people who actually run it seem to be fairly with it and hate it when they're told to do stupid stuff like disabling access.
Anyway, so the content providers aren't really that worried about me (by which I mean the people like me). Yet. So far we're just an annoyance. But with every passing year, this group I belong to becomes more and more mainstream and less and less technically savvy on average. This WILL become a problem for them if they let it get out of hand. And this is definitely pushing people in that direction. BT can be a pain, especially for watching random shows on immediately on demand. The wife and I would have put up with some commercials again just for that accessibility. The content providers could have gotten some of their eroding ad-watching viewership back.
But no, they continue to be shortsighted. - NextGenXbox, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Did password. Still doesn't work. On their site it mentions that HULU keep disabling access.
- ctpmn, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2I <3 Chuck Bartowski
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2So when I first ran this program, it said "Please enter your email address, you will need to check your inbox for the password." I entered one (a throwaway) and have yet to get anything. On the next screen, it asks you to enter the password that was sent to you. I closed the app, restarted it and got to the video browser, at which point nothing would play (as many others have reported). I wonder if I get the magical password (stupid requirement) if it somehow unlocks the app. Has anyone actually gotten it to play anything? Did you do the whole password thing?
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Because executives fear loss of control. Yes, this is very shortsighted, but it's the simple truth.
- ptFoe, on 03/03/2009, -4/+6(MS)NBC will send an email to take down the application.
Mr Gorbachev tear down this application. - dcwp, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2The point for many of us is that we don't want to be stuck with a browser as the only way to view Hulu content. Media Centers and HTPCs allow you to browse content via remote on your TV from the couch. It is a much more comfortable way to view content if you want it as part of regular entertainment rather than another thing to watch while sitting at a computer.
So yeah, Hulu is great as it is, but to become part of a Media Center application, it must be navigable via remote. Unfortunatley both Boxee and this have been killed by the Hulu team on orders from content providers. Stupid stupid stupid if you ask me. - navidb, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4can canada use this?
- antdude, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1And fullscreen video overlay on my TV?
- Thomasaka, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Being banned from 1 site due to legal reasons, regardless of how stupid, is not the same as being banned "from the WORLD WIDE WEB".
- jamesmcginnis, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Try this: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/334802.asp ...
He's developing it now - HCviolence, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1That sir is some good ASCII.
- demoman2k7, on 03/03/2009, -1/+2It's OVER before it BEGINS.. on the WEBSITE HULU has closed access to this APP in less than 4 hours.
- Midnitte, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Well they are an evil organization trying to take over the world, because they're aliens. I wouldn't doubt it if a higher up saw this as a threat to losing advertising (a "adblocker" of hulu if you will). Hopefully they see how awesome this is and support it like a "lab" such as testtube.
- MtheoryX, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1BBC does, indeed, make some top notch programming. I get some of it here in the US... I really like Kitchen Nightmares.
But aside from that, what of all the other countries in the EU? -
