- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@hammydude
Why would you put a duggmirror link when the link is to youtube.com? Oh, I know why. Because you're a douchebag who didn't even click the link. You just wanted to get dug up for providing the first duggmirror link.
Not to mention that it doesn't even work because youtube configured their apache server to block it. - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This is closer to Nickelodeon Gak than Silly Putty, if anyone happens to remember that stuff from the early 90's.
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Am I the only one that is annoyed by how-to videos on YouTube when there's no compelling reason for it to be in video format? All I want is the recipe, I don't want to watch a nearly two minute video that sums up what I can read in three seconds.
Yes, you get to watch the guy pour in two spoons of glue. Pour out the first spoon.. Slowly dump it in.. Then pour a second spoon.. Slowly pour it in. Look at the spoon. Pour out some starch. Etc
And before anyone says it, I realize the ingredients are given within the first 30 seconds of the nearly two minute long video, but how hard would have this been to just put in the video description fields.
I guess I'm just Mr. Cranky Pants - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, but I wish I had now.
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ghetto Putty? I think I just found my new rap name!
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember seeing a video of some guys that purchased a massive box full of silly putty, rolled it into a ball (which was larger than a basketball) and dropped it off a 3 or 4 story parking garage, causing it to explode into hundreds of bouncy bits.. I must find that again
**edit** FOUND IT!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=f9_rsqI1ehw - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Does it actually act like silly putty though (eg. pick up newsprint, does it bounce)? Wikipedia mentions that silly putty is made of elmer's glue and boric acid...
- J3yrad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11If it looks like, and acts like, silly putty, its silly putty to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I was hoping there would be some footage of it being used, im too lazy to actually go and make it.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10This stuff is NOT silly putty, it's just starch and glue, two mixtures of ORGANIC polymers. Inaccurate.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"It doesn't bounce OR pick up newsprint.
Not silly putty..."
Oh really? The stuff I just made does. - CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I wonder if that has the same properties as silly putty. Will it bounce, copy comics, etc? Real Silly Putty is easy to make if you can find the uncommon ingredients; boric acid and silicone oil. Here's a good link to an article on the chemistry of sill putty:
http://chemistry.about.com/od/everydaychemistry/a/sillyputty.htm - crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not silly putty. Silly putty is made of inorganic polymers. Here's how you make real silly putty. It's a bit more involved.
"An undergraduate chemistry experiment is the production of silly putty; this is done by treating a solution of dimethyldichlorosilane in diethyl ether with water (Warning: the reaction of dimethyldichlorosilane with water is violent and generates hydrogen chloride). After washing the ether solution of the silicone oil with aqueous sodium bicarbonate, the solution is dried before the ether is evaporated off. Powdered boric oxide is added to the oil and then heated to form the Silly Putty. The Silly Putty has boron based crosslinks between the polymer chains. These boron crosslinks can break and form only slowly, hence when the silly putty is hit with a hammer or thrown at the floor it shatters or bounces but when the solid is left for a time in a tray it slowly flows." - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This does pretty much everything real silly putty does, however it tends to dry up after about 2 days of use (in my experience). It's kind of a fun experiment, but also I'd rather go out and pay $3 for an egg of silly putty and have it last for over a year.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why isnt this in the videos section?
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not for sale on the Dow Corning website :(
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just make your Ghetto Putty with your ghetto buddy!
- danielman94, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, it was on some Digg story about 10 things you could make. I think it was from TechEblog or something like that.
- aclements, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not actually silly putty. Silly putty is only (officially) made by Dow, and they call it '3179 Dilatant Compound.' It can be ordered right from Dow in 50lb increments, minimum 100lb. Comes to about $12/lb after shipping.
- eschompthis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5yes it was on the article of things you can do at home
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://youtube.com/watch?v=xPN6WbIuSGU
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@J3yrad:

Not silly putty... - ElFredo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Am I the only one that is annoyed by how-to videos on YouTube when there's no compelling reason for it to be in video format?"
The worst offenders being screencasts of people typing commands from the Windows Run box or the command prompt. Just give us the ***** command lines goddammit! - contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like today's a great day for science.
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Calling MacGyver...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This stuff is nothing like silly putty.
You're never going to make silly putty with carbon compounds, given that silly putty is silicon-based. - iashraf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The white glue seen in the vid looks like wood glue, or a PVA based glue. Once dried it does not smell, but the starch seems to keep it from drying, an PVA based glues absolutely stink when wet!
- happygiraffe88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It stretches, melts, and tears like silly putty. It will sort of pick up newspaper ink (black only), but won't bounce like the real thing - it just hits the floor with a thud. It feels foamy and light compared to Silly Putty.
Like LycoLoco said, it will dry out in a few days because it's water-based. And before most of the water is kneaded out of it, it's almost exactly like Nickelodeon Gak. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** you and your spam!
- Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoah...for a second there my mind combined Nickelodeon and Diggers...I thought you said something totally inappropriate...weird!
- HelloNavi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dup.
- jakeblat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can buy 5 lbs of silly putty from the crayola store, it isn't cheap though:
http://www.crayolastore.com/product_list.asp?SKW=SILLYBULK - awa1ct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://mydogateit.net/Chapter_2_GAK_lab.pdf
We did this in biology. Its not silly putty, its GAK. - kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It does not bounce anywhere near the height of silly putty.
- Lezlee798, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Does it smell like glue?
- nogahide, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I like the comment on the site
It's putty but is it "silly" (I doubt it)..LOL - washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of Mr. Wizard on... Nickelodeon? (for you younger Diggers, think Beakman's World meets Mr. Rogers.)
Wish this kind of thing was around for my 6th grade science fair. I bet the judges would've liked it over the volconoes and "potatoes growing in water" experiments. - SonicBoom1000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd rather just spend a few bucks for Silly Putty, rather than spend money on liquid starch, glue, and food coloring...
- darkmist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Since when was starch inorganic, or glue for that matter?
- tiga31328, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This was posted a few days ago by someone else, and was a better tutorial on making it. I hate jackasses that double-post and have their little flunkie DIGGers 'digg' it for them. Get a life!
- dextermanas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alright, so we know know how to make Putty Thing. Where's Fish Guy?
- robertawerner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This was on the front page Friday guys... come on.
- comradeTJH, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Booooring.
- rhett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That stuff isn't actually silly putty. I don't know how you can make silly putty at home. The only way I know to get it is to buy it from Dow Chemical. This company buys the actual silly putty chemical from Dow, and adds color changing dyes to it and stuff. Remember those hypercolor shirts from the 90's? Check it out in your putty:
http://www.puttyworld.com/pawico.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1eh, not thats wrong actually, you see when you have mutliple tabs open and comment in ones story, it sometimes transfers over into another story, the other story was dugg to death...
I dont give a ***** whether i get highest ranked digg user, or the lowest, I just don't care about it. I only post duggmirror for myself so I can get the mirrored page, if anyone else gets it and uses it good for them.
yay for warrantless jumping to conclusions!
*blocks him* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1buried because the poster didn't post it in the video section
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1isnt the main ingredient of real silly putty silicon?
i dont think this is silly putty considering, neither elmer's school glue nor starch that i've use before contain silicon! - drules101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0who hasnt done this in schoolor with theyre mom??? its fun but it dries out and doesnt do everything silly putty does.
- roryy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Lol. Did anyone do this for their science fair in like...6th grade?
