- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21043 diggs and the server is slammed? On a website dedicated to routers and networking products?
Insert your own joke here. - OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -7/+139So instead of having a power supply plugged into your router, you have a power supply plugged into the other end of a CAT5 cable. Still a power supply.
Title should say "PoE on Linksys WRT54G!!1!!!" - TroubleInMind, on 10/10/2007, -3/+94I'm waiting for power over 802.11. Someone wake up Tesla.
- conbot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+84Cool. I love the WRT54g (if it runs dd-wrt or openwrt).
- oderdigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44Aren't you bitter... Do you happen to have a Linksys wrt54g that doesn't do the DD-wrt project?
Personally the DD-WRT project is awesome. If you can find the time to bash it for no reason other than being open source, find someone that cares. I sure as hell don't care what you think. - gjscds, on 10/10/2007, -5/+42Uhm--how?
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31Thing is, linksys "gets it". Open sourcing their firmware has sold more boxes for them than they ever would have otherwise. Graphics cards manufacturers take note!!

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28I like how you have to "Lick" the pics for high res.
According to these instructions, you still use the power adapter block to power this, so what's the point? This guy just spliced his power wire into the WAN cable. - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Tomato.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24I immediately thought PoE, i dont know why one would assume otherwise.
Routers don't run on love, man. - HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20100% cooler = 200% the coolness
- iaindings, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Without being pedantic, this isnt proper PoE as the article suggest. Plug that cable into a real PoE device, and you'll probably nuke it. The guide is just showing how to use the unused pairs in the CAT5 to carry the power. Was hoping to see a mod to enable REAL PoE on these - eg from a PoE switch.
- hurtz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18wonder if the rest of the articles over at lifehacker will make it to the front page today
- ForlornHope, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Actually, it's a slap in the face to common sense. From the article:
"I have limited space in my outdoor AP enclosure, so can't use the power connector).".
Yes, this is *so* much easier than one of those things that turns two wall-plugs into six wall-plugs or, failing that, an extension cord. Good thinking. - xBiTReaVeRx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18not if it's 100% cool"er"
- samanathon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Duh - Linksys runs the power companies!! MUHAHAHA!!!!
- TnTBass, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Maybe not easier, but 100% cooler.
- sleepyness, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I personally think Tomato is better than DD-WRT. :P
http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato - fak3r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Here, here, I run Tomato on my WRT54GL (linux) and love it. Amazed at the ton of features, and the real time graphing sold me on Tomato; awesome software, and the WRT is awesome hardware.
- camtech, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Are you being sarcastic? I run went for dd-wrt just because the stupid normal firmware had no static ip assigning. But since I have learn dd-wrt has much more to offer. And it looks nicer.
- SPThom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Well, the WRT54G is sort of the de facto standard wireless router among modders, so this is just another cool feather in its hat.
- iamnos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11The number of diggs is pretty much irrelevant, especially once something hits the front page.
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yea, because we all know how hard mac addresses are to spoof.
- wolfebyte, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15???
Page dead at 43, still dead at 56.. now up to 110 diggs and still dead? who's reading the article and where? - DaleoftheUK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Is it only me who doesn't see the need to going to all this trouble?
- darkzealot89, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Check the mirror before you post it... doh!
In other news, Google Caught it:

...and that is how it is done! - Ammused, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I've been "LICK"ing my screen for half an hour and still do not see the hi-res images. What gives?
- fak3r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10That's cool, but have you tried Tomato? The dev used to patch hyper before Thibor took it over, now the dev does Tomato, and from what I've seen it does more than any of the other 3rd party firmwares, with maybe the exception of dd (I haven't used it). Tomato is freaking nice, so many features, live graphing of traffic and of QoE! I run it on my WRT54GL (that I bought just to run a 3rd party firmware.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10The problem was limited to the firmware which by default logged connections for 5 days. Well when you are a heavy bittorrent user that means a LOT of connections.
Basically it was using up all the WRT54G's memory causing crashes and slowdowns.
This is fixed in ddwrt, openwrt and even the latest official firmware if i am not mistaken. - psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You know... they didn't exactly open source it on purpose... It was more like they felt lazy, so they grabbed some pieces of code from a GPL project. Then when it got to market they realized "oh *****, we made a mistake. we need to release the source code, and did."
- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10As the next comment states, the version you need to buy new is the WRT54GL. It's basically the old hardware but costs more. Annoying, but that's what it takes.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I'll slap you across your face with a linksys wrt54g
- Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Finally someone else caught this...
- AdamFromMyspace, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I run Tomato in my V4 also and love it.
- luchid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10DD-WRT is much more stable and performs much better than the stock firmware, especially under heavy P2P traffic load. It's the main reason I upgraded and I can attest to its grandeur. You should try it. Ir's really easy to install.
- camtech, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13The title does say "Run without power supply" ....
- UncleChachi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's what she said?
- timfrazee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I dont believe you understand how your wireless network works.
- NYCvibe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Actually there is a mod to cool it down a bit. Here are the steps listed below:
Step 1: Grab a big @$$ fan, and plug it in.
Step 2: Turn fan on high
Step 3: Point fan in direction of router.
The best part about this mod is that all the steps are interchangeable, as long as they are all followed. - dimplemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"The page you requested has been blocked because it contains a banned word. URL = http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=54169"
That word wouldn't happen to be DIGG.COM? - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This mod doesn't negate the laws of physics. It's still drawing power.
- iCiCLEz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7is it me. or it this topic still being dugg when it's not even accessible.
- emt41, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5you are going to pay either way, it still uses power
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Since it is obvious everyone here knows what PoE is, then why not put PoE in the title like I recommended, rather than being vague?
Don't mind me. I just like to poke fun at bad titles. I don't take offense to the title or anything, I just think it's silly. - bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And you have so much better winning things to do?
Remember, "geeks" are smarter than you, and will probably sign your paychecks. Skilled labour FTW! - Wyzard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5..."some pieces of code" being the entire Linux kernel and related userspace tools.
However, the later models of the WRT54G run VxWorks instead of Linux, and don't have source code available. (Linksys still sells the Linux-based version with a different model number, WRT54GL, but it costs more.) - gamerzworld, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Stop hogging the intertube's power! :(
- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually, they got slammed hard by the Netfilter guys at gplviolations.org and almost dragged into court over it. That "hippie" GPL license thingie actually has sharp teeth.
- MikeWanDo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I love the links that say "Lick for Hi Res"
