- Stevosaurous, on 11/08/2009, -31/+821we still shouldnt have to do this!
- smacksaw, on 11/09/2009, -20/+356Here is the easiest way to remove the Dragon Age ad:
I am not going to buy Dragon Age now, or any other thing that is advertised like that. In fact, I decided not to buy Brutal Legend because the ads were so annoying. - UselessTrivia, on 11/09/2009, -15/+269My suggestion to Digg:
If this is necessary to keep digg running, I'll accept it grudgingly, but it's still ***** and ugly and annoying, especially the shrinking of the comment section.
You should really give logged in users the ability to turn off the site integration ads, though. I'm sure it's a small minority of your viewership, so it shouldn't cost you that much, and it might entice other users to log in, which I'm sure is better for you in the long run...more people with accounts, more people able to click the digg button and submit stories, etc...
I understand why this kind of thing is necessary. Ad revenue is shrinking along with the effectiveness of simple banner ads. Click rates are dropping and money is drying up. If pursuing a new revenue source is a necessary evil, then I understand, but keep in mind most of the users seem to really hate it. - mabsark, on 11/08/2009, -7/+252This ad can be removed permanently by overiding Digg's styles using the Stylish firefox add-on. Just install it and restart, open up the Stylish sidebar from the View menu, and click the Write New Style button.
Give the new style a name, and add the following code
@-moz-document domain(digg.com) {
body {
background:#E5ECF3 none repeat scroll 0 0 !important;
}
#container {
max-width:1200px !important;
}
}
Click Save, job done. - Awwzm, on 11/09/2009, -8/+176Now I hate Dragon Age
- twiztidsinz, on 11/09/2009, -3/+129There's a difference between having ads (which is fine) and having ads that annoy your user base, alter your page layout and cause disinterest in the product.
practically 2/3rds of Digg's page is Dragon Age ad...
I come to Digg for Digg... not for gigantic ads. - bdfariello, on 11/09/2009, -1/+120Clear, so you actually see the wall behind your monitor?
- Mattja, on 11/09/2009, -5/+121I use adblock plus and digg looks perfectly normal to me. I didn't even know that ad existed until I saw it on the FP
- securesystems, on 11/09/2009, -2/+90There's nothing wrong with ads, but they don't need to be so annoying! Pissing off the very people you are targeting with your ads is a losing strategy.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/09/2009, -5/+92That would hide the ad, but it probably wouldn't fix the comment width.
- Asvetic, on 11/09/2009, -8/+831. Download Firefox
2. Install Ad Block Plus add-on
3. ???
4. Profit - 80hd, on 11/09/2009, -1/+72I haven't seen it yet, but I'll digg this just to see how well Rose's crew handles advertiser vs. user wishes.
- shaughn13, on 11/09/2009, -52/+118why? because the free site that you use has no right in trying to compensate for server cost and bandwidth? either get a job at digg and help them find a better way or stop complaining. kinda simple...
- Fleagleman, on 11/09/2009, -1/+64"Buried! We'll try to give you fewer ads like that one."
And by that we mean "totally ignore your vote and try and shove this annoying ad down your throat as much as possible, because our ads are way more important than some idiot Digg user who dosesn't give us any money." - bdfariello, on 11/09/2009, -1/+61The most hilarious part is that they put these background ads in because so many Diggers use AdBlock. It took a matter of hours for Diggers to produce a work-around to never see background ads again.
- touchinmyself, on 11/09/2009, -35/+91HOW DARE THEY TRY TO MAKE MONEY!!!
- NovaPrime9, on 11/09/2009, -3/+44Making money is one thing. Using a completely overwhelming and distracting ad like that? Sorry, that's a whole different ballgame. I allow ads except for those that I find bothersome. This one? WAY beyond bothersome.
- rnawky, on 11/09/2009, -23/+63Digg gets more and more greedy every day of the week.
More and more ads appear on the site as the ads get bigger and bigger. Some even automatically start to play audio for you, just to make sure they have your attention.
Then they started to add ads to the mobile site too. So far it's just an banner ad on the top, which is usually wider than the rest of the ***** page, causing the entire page to look like ***** because of it.
It's only a matter of time before they add another ad to the mobile site, towards the bottom this time.
And you know ads will appear on the Digg Bar soon. - GregFD3S, on 11/09/2009, -4/+42I know how to solve this...
JUMANJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - mikoss, on 11/09/2009, -4/+41I'm using adblock plus 1.1.1 with firefox 3.5.5 and I still see this ad...
do I need to change the config or something?
looks like i'm not the only one with this problem:
"Horrifying. It even resized the page. And did that Digg story say "sponsored by Sony Pictures"? What the hell? Oh, and the huge dragon age ad is there even with adblock plus on." - mabsark, on 11/09/2009, -3/+38Correct. 3 points to UselessTrivia. For a bonus point, what colour does it leave the background?
- regulan, on 11/09/2009, -14/+49Hey Digg, you can pass this along to your advertisers.
I was thinking about buying Dragon Age later this week, that was until I saw this ad. Now there's no way I'm going to spend a nickel on it. - ThantiK, on 11/09/2009, -0/+34...yeah, each time it pops up?...no thanks.
- dublea2, on 11/09/2009, -4/+37Firefox w/ AdBlock Plus FTW. I've never seen ads on digg since I installed. If these advertising agencies would go back to none-moving, none-flashed based ads and just use images like they used to, I might turn ad-blocking off.
- covertbadger, on 11/09/2009, -15/+47Option 3) Block the ads. If digg can't find a way to earn revenue without pissing me off, that's really their problem and not mine. There are plenty of sites out there that have found ways to provide genuine value, and they make hundreds of dollars a year from me. Guess how many of those make a habit of stuffing ads in my face?
- Kallius, on 11/09/2009, -0/+32Only two types of ads bother me:
1) Flash ads which cover the part of the page you want to read and have hidden/apparently non-existent "close" buttons, and
2) Pages which will not display until the ad is loaded, and the ad server is bogged down. - sajuuk, on 11/09/2009, -1/+321. Download Firefox
2. Install Ad Block Plus add-on
3. ???
4. No Profit For EA
Fixed that for you. - >mark, on 11/08/2009, -9/+39or just copy and paste this into the url bar:
javascript:function%20digg(){document.body.style.background="#E5ECF3%20none%20repeat%20scroll%200%200"}%20digg(); - oedenfield, on 11/09/2009, -2/+28if a company wants to kill their product/service, they should be allowed to.
- clone206, on 11/09/2009, -2/+28"As a loyal fan, I feel they owe me" - Comic Book Guy
- AremRed, on 11/09/2009, -1/+27you use the digg bar?
hmmmm - GregFD3S, on 11/09/2009, -4/+29I frequently click on ads here to help support Digg, but I refuse to click on the Dragon Age ad because it's clearly overkill.
- scoottie, on 11/09/2009, -1/+26I dont mind adds, but making them look like actually Digg posts is annoying. I dont give a ***** who would win in a fight between Kimbo and a cricket.
- lnxfi, on 11/09/2009, -2/+27"Can't get enough Dragon Age? Play the flash game here!"
Of course! I've been lacking exposure to this game recently! - Snakedal337, on 11/09/2009, -5/+29I'm with you, the game actually looks good, and has gotten decent reviews, but i'm sick and tired of having the ads shoved in my face on EVERY SINGLE WEBSITE I VISIT.
So no buy from me.
Might just have to pirate it now. /s - 11oops, on 11/09/2009, -3/+27Yes. Yes you are.
- Brak710101, on 11/09/2009, -2/+24Black. I tried it. Adblock plus wasn't built for modifying websites, just blocking things from loading.
- fadetoone, on 11/09/2009, -0/+22Well, at least the sides aren't clickable (for me anyway). I tend to click on the sides of a page to ensure focus and hate when it spawns a damn pop up.
- CraigHwk, on 11/09/2009, -10/+31Oh get over yourself. You're missing out on one of the best RPGs to come out in years over an ad? Your loss.
- mabsark, on 11/09/2009, -0/+20Take a look, http://digg.com/pc_games/Id_Softwares_John_Carmack ...
- CraigHwk, on 11/09/2009, -4/+24What Dragon Age ad?
- gunit99, on 11/09/2009, -4/+23Dear Digg,
I love you and am hopelessly addicted to you and will continue to be, but for this, get *****!

- BearinG, on 11/09/2009, -0/+18For Opera, you can make a custom CSS just for digg.com.
Right-Click, Edit Site Preferences, Display, make a digg.css using:
body {
background:#E5ECF3 none repeat scroll 0 0 !important;
}
#container {
max-width:1200px !important;
} - 11oops, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17I leave advertising on nearly all the time, with the only exception being when the ads are unsightly or obtrusive (as this one is). Other 'bad' ads are ones that expand automatically, play sound, or ones that flash or do anything else to draw the attention from the content.
This full page ad caused me to remove all ads from Digg. I put up with the tooth whitening crap, and the auto-expanding crap a few weeks ago, but this is too damn much. - socivitus, on 11/09/2009, -8/+25Digg doesn't make profit. Digg cost $11 million to run last year and made $6 million. They run off investments and have 71 employees to pay. Do you think Digg's investors are going to sit back and support it and not see a return? Digg either profits off the site itself and stays private, goes IPO, or sells completely.
I never wanted to believe the Digg community was this dumb, but I've been proven wrong. - Elranzer, on 11/09/2009, -1/+18Kevin and MrBabyMan are not going to like this...
- greenlight2001, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17ABP won't block this ad unless you MANUALLY add it. So the fact you haven't seen it isn't because you use ABP, but rather you just haven't stumbled upon a story that is using it as a background.
- antdude, on 11/09/2009, -6/+23Why can't Digg offer subscription accounts for no ads?
