How to Turn Your PlayStation 3 Into a Linux PC
popularmechanics.com — PS3 can't run Microsoft Windows or Apple's OS X but it can run Linux operating systems. There are many Linux varieties, but our favorite is Ubuntu. And it turns out that the open-source community has created a program called kboot that helps load Ubuntu onto the PS3.

- metalstorm, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8This is actually one of the main reasons I got a PS3, a cheap way to be able to mess around with the Cell processor. My flavor of Linux differs from this guide but that hardly matters.
Now if only Adobe would release flash for it, I could finish it off as a great media center PC. Considering how long it took them to do the same with x86 Linux I am not holding my breath though.- Bhima, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2So have you written any code that actually executes on that Cell processor yet?
- metalstorm, on 05/14/2008, -1/+1Ha, yeah actually the funny thing is that the only code I have written to run on it was on a test IBM Cell blade server at the place I used to work. The things I would do for some more free time...
- Bhima, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2So have you written any code that actually executes on that Cell processor yet?
- onionbagel724, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4linux doesn't need that kind of power
- timusca, on 05/14/2008, -2/+4Call me crazy, but I bought a PS3 to play games the way Sony designed it to... if I want to run Linux, which I don't, I'd buy a computer for less money. Heck, I'm as Apple fanboy as it gets, and I wouldn't install OS X on it if I could.
- metalstorm, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Actually Sony was originally pushing the point that the PS3 would ship with Linux but changed it just before release. It is actually really cheap for a Linux machine that is that powerful. Besides it's not like you can't play PS3 games on it after you put Linux on it.
- BoonTobias, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3if you could install osx on it, you know you'd be doing it, whore
- chkdg8, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1You made my day. Thank you.
- td04impostor, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Will it play Crysis? :)
- ssjdagas, on 05/29/2008, -2/+1This is cool, seems much easier than when I installed Linux on my PSP a few years ago.
- connorf, on 05/31/2008, -1/+4can we kill steve balmer now?
- frup, on 06/06/2008, -1/+0I live in New Zealand.
I wish I could enter :( - phinn, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4This is nothing new, I've had Linux (Yellowdog 6.0) installed on my PS3 for months now, it works great at 1080p after some tweaking. It's all quite easy to do and there are guides right on the website for everything.
Got Snes9x, Genesis, even MAME emulators installed, along Firefox, Pidgin, etc, then if you wanna go back to the normal "gameOS" then you just reboot it. I'd recommend getting a cheap ($10) USB hub if you wanna use a USB mouse/keyboard and any accessories for Linux, some people just use Bluetooth stuff for everything though, I don't.
I still haven't popped a bigger hard drive in as I still have like 15 gigs free on the 40 gig with all my games, Linux, and ***** installed. However when the time comes I'll probably grab a nice 120gig 7200rpm 16mb cache (would be very quick) drive off Newegg or somethin - pagno, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Wow, thats pretty cool. But why? This geek obsession to run linux on everything from consoles to a goddamn toaster, why? Linux is (still) not a desktop OS, but its the OS of choice for everything else.
