- petroK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Oh please, bootleged, I got my first 3 tats with a rig like this... I only caught 2 types of hepatitis, and my immune system kept me alive this long...
stop spreading needless fear.
(Oh yeah, and those 3 tattoos aren't "ugly" or "amateurish" they're gritty and edgy, dammit) - bootlegged, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Too bad the gold mine will be one of, not gold, but hepatitis.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/17/2007, -0/+11It at least should have been posted after "build your own autoclave".
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Next up: how to make a tattoo remover out of a laser pointer. Hopefully.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9Finally, a useful article posted on digg.
- stlcadet11, on 10/17/2007, -3/+11Yeah, this is what we all need.... a do it yourself tattoo gun.
- mxlpct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have a couple of friends who learned how to make tattoo machines out of a tape decks/walkmans, in jail.
- falstaff, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6Electric toothbrush: $25
Creative Commons licensed design: $0
Three weeks' prescription of antibiotics: $50
Geek pride: Priceless. - mxlpct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've seen some of the work done with them. Not very impressive. I don't know what to blame more, the artist or the machine.
- tmj0nes99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ten minutes to build this gadget.
A lifetime to regret. - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I would've read this article but I'm not in prision, so I don't care.
- jonnystiph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have a couple of friends who learned how to make tattoo machines out of a tape decks/walkman
I have done this. Please do not do this. It's not sanitary it's not safe, and it's just plain stupid. It will be on your body "FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE", laser removal is not clean or pretty. Do not do what I have done (they are all covered now with professional work). My advice, check out people's work you like, ask them were they got it, specify the artist. Ask to see the autoclave, ask how it works (make sure it's not a dust collector). Talk the artist about what you want, listen to their advice (they are professionals) and remember you get what you pay for. DO NOT BE CHEAP! This is not going to wash off, it will be there. I have a full sleeve +, my very close friend owns a shop. Trust me in these words.
Thank you for your time and helping to eliminate crappy "jail" tattoos. - rapiddemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Buried for innacurate, you also need a rusty nail and some duct tape. Plus, the site doesn't tell you how to make a shiv and it really should.
- vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"How to: Make a Tattoo Gun from Electric Toothbrush and Get Infected with Hepatitis"
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The way all these people are talking about infectious diseases you'd think they'd never heard of sterilization. You don't need an autoclave when you can use pure denatured alcohol, or concentrated lysol. And besides, any smart person knows use the needle once, chuck it and get another one out. Sterilizing the handle of the brush and the mechanical pencil tip would be as trivial as a soaking in ehated denatured alcohol (140-150 degrees or so to rupture most any cell wall. That's how alcohol really works, by osmotic imbalance.
- quine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As odd as it sounds this is in-fact high-tech for a tattoo *machine*. The original design that most artists work off of hasn't changed since the 19th century and can be made out of hardware store parts.
- sherlockian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I could use this design to make tattoos in prison after I can't afford several trillion dollars to settle with the RIAA.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I wonder if you can even replace the "needle" after jamming the eraser in the toothbrush....
There should be a warning message on this .. great way to spread diseases. - diafel, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3Yet another digitalgopher article fraudulently promoted to the front page. Do you people not notice the same users constantly exploiting digg like this?
What's worse is Do it yourself tattoo guns article have made it to digg several times, including this one http://digg.com/mods/How_to_Make_a_tattoo_gun with almost 400 diggs. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Parents will be screaming
- capitocapito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks!
It was always so difficult for me to put my signature on my prison bitch's ass. - haggie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Permanent marking on your body should always be done by amateurs with improvised tools!
If its good enough for imprisoned convicts, its good enough for my little girl's lower back! What a wonderful father/daughter bonding opportunity! - diggdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cigarette ashes and ink pin ink are what was used in jail in the 70's and 80's. South America has quite the prolific jail tattoo phenomenon these days. Too bad they don't have mirrors.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jesus christ, if you want to be a tattoo artist, just buy a tattoo machine. they're not that expensive. people, please bury this ***** before a bunch of retards who never wanted to commit to becoming a real tattoo artist and learning safety and sanitation techniques builds one of these things and goes around scarring people for life.
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"10-minutes or less to build this gadget"
And tens years regretting it. - jonnystiph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nothing says "executive material" like a tattoo. Employer really dig tattoos.
And so do women. Specifically, women who hang out at truck stops. Okay, if you're going to be technical, prostitutes working at truck stops.
Now that's just not fair. A professional tattoo can be very attractive. I have been sporting a full sleeve for 6+ years and it never hurt my career. My boss is not interested in my tattoo work, he is interested in whether or not I can do my job. Granted I am lucky enough to work with computers, so most of my "customer" interaction is helping out testers and developers. A colorful, tasteful tattoo can be attractive to a lot of people. I dated an accountant who was more heavily tattooed than myself. She did just fine at her job as well. I realize that they are not for everyone, little really is for everyone. However, blanket statements about "you are trailer trash if" is just another "ism" we can live without. - TexanPsycho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol. i can see a lot of people making a mess of this and "scarring" their skin for life. theres nothing like geeking it up though.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wouldn't want to be employed by someone idiotic enough to disregard my skills and experience because I had a drawing on my skin.
- burstaneurysm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not to beat a dead horse, but this information doesn't belong in anyones hands. This is a dangerous device that can cause infection, scarring, highly likely to pass disease, and will also create a terrible tattoo.
If you want a nice looking tattoo that will last, seek a professional tattoo artist, pay the money to get it done right.
If you want your new tattoo to scream "Hey, look at my amateur, infected tattoo! Doesn't it look like I've been in prison for years?" then make this device. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is not a tattoo machine, nor is it more high tech than even the lowest grade tattoo machines out there.
- fmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@untangledwill
"you are a ***** ***** mr maxmel. and yes i spelt your name wrong.. shocking!"
And such a clever insult it was, too.
"maybe i'll forget to capitalise a sentence as well. we aint all out to please you"
But I value your opinion so highly, oh pseudonymous Internet conversant. I'm hurt.
"so because of this you think people who do want them should not get them...? people can do what ever the hell they want with there own body!"
I don't give a rat's ass about whether you get one or not. You can get a tattoo, nose, tongue, and nipple piercings, neck rings, a frenum loop, lip plates, and tongue and penis split for all I care. Every one of those body modifications has its practitioners and admirers. But don't be surprised if you don't find yourself moving up the corporate ladder.
"and whatever you do, dont ever ever get a tattoo....you might fall off your social ladder and whatever would you say to your boss!!!"
I won't get one -- but it has little to do with social status. It is because I think that tattoos are ugly and tasteless, just like practically every body modification that I mentioned above. - threedaymonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Knowledge is knowing how to make a tattoo gun from an electric toothbrush.
Wisdom is not doing so. - osc1882, on 10/17/2007, -5/+6I agree. This info shouldn't be in the hands of diggers.
Look mom, a home made Tattoo gun. It's Pac-Man! - PureHeretic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1unfortunately i have a tattoo on my back that was done the same way about 4 years ago on my back
honestly its very innacurate and ive had it covered up once already and working on a second coverup
this shouldnt be in the hands of diggers
buried - blogger123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thus starts the great tattoo culture in the tech community

"first off, there's nothing wrong with construction."
Never said that there was, but it's not exactly a fast-track to financial success.
"secondly, prisoners also wear shoes OMFG!!! that must mean there's something wrong with wearing shoes!!!!!"
But the wearing of shoes is not something that they do as a prison fashion statement.
"i'm 21 years old and i'm doing what i love, that's all that really matters. what kind of high powered dream job are you workin at, huh, buddy?"
I'm an electrical engineer at a company that produces satellites and rockets. I'm currently working on an interplanetary probe and will be going to the Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral to be a part of the launch team. Maybe I'll get a tattoo while I'm there. - aashishsahrawat, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1More tattoos with categories based are available at
http://www.atledo.com - dasDrache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, the only way one could get Hepatitis from this is if he first used it on another person and then used it on himself without sterilizing it, and if your that stupid you'll probably wind up dead soon enough anyway oô.
I don't think you should use this thing tough, tattoos would probably look horrible.
Still: neat construction =) - adrockp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Back in the day we used a reg toothbrush and a walkman motor ot tapedeck motor .
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lasers? that's a bit too high-tech for the crowd who would use a tattoo "gun." a cheese grater is more like it.
- WallyAnti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@adamsucks
Yeah, if you employ a used electric toothbrush you might as well sterilize it with a good dunk in the toilet before you get started. Great way to get hep C. If it's a new brush and you have a way to replace the nozzle and wrap the whole thing (excluding the needle) in cellophane and replace the needle after each use it wouldn't be that bad. One of the best tat artists I know got started with a homemade rig. I know plenty of artists who have a shop and the whole shebang who I wouldn't let come near me.
Setting the depth of the needle could be a problem as well. - toodamfast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg for Mcguyver like design.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not with tattoo guns. tattoo artists were trained through apprenticeships just as they are today. and if you do sign up for an apprenticeship you will learn that tattoo artists do not use tattoo GUNS. they use tattoo machines. people who use tattoo guns are called scratchers.
- TechSatan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0well people depending on how its made it isn't any MORE or LESS safe then a pro gun the chance of infection is the same regardless it all depends on the tattooist you can have the most expensive pro gun possible but if your an idiot you can still mess it up badly or even transmit many diseases but you can take the most ghetto of ghetto guns and as long as the person is clean smart pro and has more common sense then a common house fly.. can give the safest tattoo possible keeping any and all equipment sanitized is the key part yes i agree using a Bic pen and a sewing needle.. is NOT the safest idea but if your using pre cleaned sanitized stainless steal then your pretty much at the same level as a pro gun and tattooing period isn't safe there is NO tattoo ink that's safe all inks currently made today are all industrial grade pigments only reason its legal is because the government hasn't had a hand in controlling it yet as of late ALL tattooing is managed my local law not federal. I'm a professional tattooist and 90% of my tats are self done with ghetto guns i have yet to get a single disease infection or even discoloration. all my tats are clean and pro looking so again as i stated before it snot the equipment you use.... its the person using it
- Chris419, on 06/06/2008, -0/+0Actually in a way I agree with TechSatan, however if you are implying that an ill-advised "homemade" tattoo gun should be made by persons under the age of 18, digitalographer then you are not only advising something that is against the law but luring people into a false sense of security. If you don't sterilize the needle then there is a big risk of you getting Hepititus A & B, Aids, etc. I advise each and every one of you people out there under 18 looking into this to just be patient and wait until you can get one professionally made. However, if you have a parent's consent you can get one before the age of 18 but I'm just saying sneaking behind your parents' backs and getting a homemade tattoo is immature and dumb. Use your common sense on this one people.
- wuebelknievel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok fmaxwell... ur an idiot. just leave ppl as they are. who cares if they have tats or not. it is growing in the U.S. and oviously ur one of those jerks that are not open minded or have any room for change in ur life. so keep with your boring life and let everyone else make their own decisions. a tattoo isnt going to make anyone any less accomplished. and if a boss does see a tattoo as something that affects who to hire, then that boss shouldnt be in charge of things.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first off, there's nothing wrong with construction. secondly, prisoners also wear shoes OMFG!!! that must mean there's something wrong with wearing shoes!!!!!11one. get a grip. i'm 21 years old and i'm doing what i love, that's all that really matters. what kind of high powered dream job are you workin at, huh, buddy?
- fmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1smackhero:
"luckily your type of elitist view is slowly dying out in the U.S."
You keep telling yourself it's "elitist" and "dying out." You'll find that tattoos are much more common among inmates than successful professionals.
"i work in the music industry, and i can assure you that atleast in this industry those prejudices do not exist. my boss, a successful record label exec, has more than a few tattoos himself, and so far i haven't seen my tattoos and piercings as being an impediment to my academic career or my work career."
It's not an impediment in the construction trade or custom motorcycle industry either. But most people on Digg are not looking for careers in those fields.
"as for my social life, i'm grateful that my tattoos save me from wasting time on judgemental[sic] ***** like yourself."
Go f*ck yourself. And get a shift key and spell checker while you're at it. Finding something to be unattractive and distasteful is not being judgmental. If you're put off by grotesque obesity, tongue piercings, nose rings, tattoos, or other things that people do to their bodies, then no amount of discussion about it is going to make you like the look. - juggalo373, on 07/21/2009, -0/+0leave some comments under my comments tab on my homemade tattoos http://usefulstuff.synthasite.com/tattoos-ive-done ...
