- Oetzi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It may not be the most complex thing ever but it is a fun idea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Cool make.
- BradC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes, it looks like he's from Malmö, which is in Sweden so that probably explains the grammatical errors.
I agree that for people who aren't that into electronics, this is a great little fun project. For example, one could use it to get their kids interested in these kinds of projects, and it's a very cheap and easy way for them to do it. Great post, Digg++ - z0l0pht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Knowing me, I'd crack the box 2 minutes after I built it, like every other case of Tic-Tacs I've ever touched.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I say they try to drill out a tic tac and make a flashlight out of that... Only then would I be impressed.
- gooru, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I would be careful doing that!
He soldered the batteries directly. Not a good idea! Do you really want to risk blowing up a battery in your face to have a cheap flashlight? - skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Soldering isn't that dangerous, as it doesn't get that hot.
Welding, however, is extremely dangerous near batteries. :P - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Do you really want to be flaming?
well....alright...
Poof! ... you're a lighter. - Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Call me when they make a tic tak flah bang. That way when someone comes up to you and says "Oh hey is that a tic tak can I have one?" then you could be like "shure" then you press a button and hand it to them and then *Flash* they would all be like"ow my eyse they burn" then you could be like "Hands off my tic takes beioch". That would be awsome! People would finally stop bothering me for a fricken Tic Tak.
*Horrible grammer intended*
Any way Digg - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This isn't soviet Russia. Just go out and buy a ***** flashlight.
- squegie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's actually what I thought the headline meant at first. Or at least a flashlight the size of a tic-tac. I was thinking... hmm.. I could see a tic-tac sized led, but battery and switch too? That would impress me.
- KaosX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ill forgive the grammatical errors because I think the guy just might be foreign.
All in all, electronics projects can be rather fun for the uninitiated....I think my first time making something electronic was a simple phone tap transmitter.
Im working on making a set of portable usb powered speakers for my iBook now...having trouble as to how to mount them to the screen but the electronics part is all done. - MrDolomite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3totally useless technology-related with pictures. that's what digg is all about. +dugg
- tripm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can buy a mag-lite with a keychain for 5 dollars... and it wont break when you step on it.
- dosle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this would be a fun little project to have your kids or a cubscout troop make! nice
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Not very... most people (I'd guess about 75%) wouldn't be able to write out a schematic for this.
*grrr*
Even though I log in and use a password, what's with the fekkin image passcode verification? - abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being simple doesn't make it non useful or cool. You would be surprised how many people don't know they first thing when it comes to electronics. This is the perfect project to get someones feet wet with. Did you ever think that this is a hobby that lots of people enjoy, that is why it made it to the front page! Here is something else that needs the same type of knowledge http://digg.com/mods/What_to_do_with_Blue_Balls you won't find a University student making this for a school project. But many people make these things for FUN.
- tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there any instructions for making the Pak-Lite:
http://www.9voltlight.com/
I know it's cheap and i could buy it with out all the trouble, but what can i do they don't ship to Israel. - MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5That's cool.
- rafster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Figure out how long it will take to make this vs the cost of a small Mag-lite. Doesn't seem like a very safe project for kids either (solder batteries?).
I can make a wireless audio device out of two toilet paper rolls - range = approx. 8 ft.! - sauvaget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i couldn't / wouldn't be bothered to do it, but it's fun all the same.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's cool.. But I've seen people build a wireless FM mic into one of those.
- tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Israeli.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Ill forgive the grammatical errors"? Indeed.
- twoschizos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg because it's a McGuyver thing.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You overestimate most people. That having been said, this would have impressed me a lot more if it had been a Nano-ATX PC in a tic-tac carton.
- tomakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In soviet russia light flashes you!
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My guess, it's probably just a couple of resistors (say around 640 ohm) connected to a couple of white leds in parallel. The only hard part is building the plastic cap to fit the battery.
- InFlames62, on 11/23/2007, -0/+0damn thats cool http://bodybuildingrecipe.com/
- ShitPoint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's a fun idea, ill make me one of these when i have time. seems to be easy to make... thanks for share it...
- laxmaster66, on 06/05/2009, -0/+0the whole point of making it is the experience, not that it is industry standard
- gordie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it's a risk but a small one. More of a concern to me would be damaging the battery without any external sign of it. Also, AAA batteries don't take to solder easily. A high wattage iron and a quick touch will do the trick. The correct method is in fact the use of a specialized spot welder. I might have preferred if a set of spring contact had been fashioned making the batteries more serviceable.
- bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tweeto are you Israeli or a diplomat? I live in Israel too :)
- hutectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A piece of crap ,the project would cost more to build than to buy one.
- CubeFarmDrone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I would be happier with just the TicTacs.
- tomakun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Actually I wouldn't worry too much about that. Have you ever touched a 9v to your tongue? Basically all you can feel is a slight tingling.
- ColinmH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Now that's the Funny :)........ But I agree with Dosle it would be fun for a kids project at school or something like that
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4MAKE ME A LIGHTER AND WE'LL TALK
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2The only thing I learned, I never knew that 3 AAAs would fit nicely inside a tic-tac box.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Lame.....
- IcanFLY, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I was expecting the switch to be controlled by opening the lid of the box.. then it would at least have *some* novelty. Ya, so.. it sucks.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Geez. The "Mods" category is really getting filled with crap these days. The guy even soldered the thing to the batteries directly. Lame.
Now if it was powered by the actual Tic Tacs themselves, then THAT would be cool. You could do it with pencil lead and Rhodoferax Ferrireducens. See http://sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=00054931-E680-1F58-905980A84189EEDF - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2If you're five years old, yes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Hey! Thanks for the idea. Digg my submission up in 5 minutes!
To keep with the recent theme I'll have a wildly misleading headline:
"Genesis Character Cup has the Light" - xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Dude, its some batteries wired to an LED and resistor... Even if you never did that sort of thing in science in school (should have, unless you went to special school), most people could guess how it goes.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4complete waste of time
complete waste of effort
I can buy a flashlight for less than the time/effort I'll put into it
but damnit, now I want one. Here's to this saturday's useless project.
*no digg though - its cool, but not front page worthy - dime, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6
... but does it run linux?
sorry, i couldn't help myself. mod me down, rip my testicles off, force me to watch ishtar. i must be punished. - linuxinit, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2How did this make the front page?!?! Jeez... Next thing we'll see: Somebody puts a lightbulb in a Sonic cup and calls it innovation.
- xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1A 12 year old could design and make that, i mean COME ON, how did this make the front page.
And some guy on the comments on that site is asking for a SCHEMATIC of it, LOL how stupid do you have to be to not know how to wire that. - eHardOn, on 10/12/2007, -18/+0..if I saw some DiggTard using this flashlight, I'd punch that person right in the *****' mouth. Then I'd empty the batteries from the TicTac box and put all the user's teeth in it.
