- Beshitehboss, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48You get a USB wireless adapter and stick in the middle of the strainer... then u put it on top of your head, and go search for rice.... oops.. i mean WiFi signal
- Archer06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Reading the article usually helps.
- aemaeth7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19This has been around for a long time. However, if you really want a wide access, there's a way to connect old satellite dishes to your computer and adjust the focus of the satellite to the frequency of WiFi, which would provide you a VERY long distance.

In this instructable I make a common WiFi Thumbdrive into a beefy wifi extender!'
The parabolic Asian cooking(dumpling) strainer is the perfect candidate for this project.
I was able to pick up 20 more access points in the city and connect to a network a few blocks away!
This is BY-FAR the most simple of all Wifi extensions! - GeneralKickass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
- Mark Twain - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i can imagine this in the next bond movie.
Chinese spy in all black sneak suit gets in secret base, pulls out pda, taps in code, pulls out dumpling strainer USB WIFI extension...SATELLITE UPLINK CONNECTING...

sarcasm - kahlessreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4According to a previous Digg post a Wok is actually many times better. One with good LOS can get signal a few miles away.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm more comfortable driving around for an access point than looking really suspicious with a dumpling strainer detector
- Grummond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://j-walk.com/other/wifispray/index.htm
- sparkysko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Used direcTV dishes work alot better. The size and shape of your 'satellite dish' is directly related to the frequency that it operates on. DirectTV uses 2.5ghz which is close enough to the 2.4ghz. There are tons of people who sell these on craigslist, yard sales, or just give them away. Then you replace their transmitter with yours. Works even better if you make a simple directional antenna, and point it at the dish. A biquad antenna is very well suited for using at a satellite dish because of it's small size. You can easily get 15-25dbi with a directional antenna and satellite dish.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Having recently built a cantenna, I have to say that they aren't that great because of their narrow beam width. You have to be very precise and know exactly what you're pointing at. If there's no clear LOS, you're going to have issues. I'm looking at a biquad antenna the moment to alleviate these issues.
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just build or buy a cantenna. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantenna
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3An old Satellite dish is ideal, as it is actually designed to be a precision parabolic reflector.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Serious question. So, with just the strainer and a USB wifi adapter on an extender cable I can use this with my laptop as a 2nd wifi connection? Or is it (for some weird reason) necessary to solder it onto the existing card lurking somewhere in the bowels of my laptop? I travel a ton and hotels sometimes have very ***** signals even on their own wifi systems.
(& Don't get me started on Days Inn...their wifi is the worst of any national chain.) - fino35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I usually don't complain about stories being old, but this was around before the first episode of the broken.
Still creative though. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you do want to make a cantenna, make sure it's the Tin Can version. It's cheaper for parts, WAY easier for construction and works like a champ. (It beat the pringles cantenna in a shootout, here's the link http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/has.html )
Here's ny cantenna:
http://www.neodux.com/?view=story.php&post_id=300 - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's "100% free" if you want to boost the range of your AP only, and you have the materials.
The cantenna is "100% free" if you have off-brand ravioli or a can of Dinty Moore on hand and an N-connector.
And don't try to tell me that a parabolic reflector on your AP is better than a cantenna. Not to mention the fact the cantenna is a little more portable for wardriving and hotel wireless uses. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These work great for such a project and they're cheap. ($14.99 + free shipping)

but id try my neighbors router - goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old as the hills but still groovy.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1du-hurr, nice try troll.
try metal, RF tends to reflect a little better with it. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, pretty lame too.
- capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was a joke. moron.

How far of a distance? I live out in the country, there is only one internet provider and cost is ridiculous... would this be something that would work. Can you give me more on your satellite/computer info? Thanks. - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2 I know you're kidding around but I wonder if the cantenna and dumpling strainer are two different devices, one being an antenna and the latter a reflector.
- TheYellowMole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wait, I'm confused. Do you:
a) plug this into your router, point it in a direction and head out that direction or
b) plug this into your laptop, head out a bit and point it at the router? - demonstro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now if I could just get a couple more of those USB extenders.....

How to Increase Your Wi-Fi Signal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY8Wi7XRXCA - haooken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I think its just that its easy to wedge the USB adapter inside of the wire mesh. and the handle makes for easy cord storage. I suppose...
- Beshitehboss, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Pictures or it didn't happen.
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Hmmm, this only works with Asian dumpling strainers? What about Italian dumpling strainers? Bosnian dumpling strainers? Canadian dumpling strainers? Do certain Asian strainers work best over others? Can we get better or worse reception with Korean strainers? Japanese strainers? Filipino strainers? Vietnamese strainers?

WTF is a WIFI Thumbdrive? I mean seriously, seriously, drive WTF? - Beshitehboss, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3@samnetwork
i wish i knew WTF is the WIFI DRIVE.... I wish i had made the discovery and written that article... but i didn't... so i have no clue WTF the author means by a USB WIFI DRIVE... but i know what a strainer is... kinda... - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Nice. I can't wait to try this out, hope this will work a bit better for my crappy wireless adapter.
Does this work with other bowl-shaped metallic things, or is there something special about the dumpling strainer? - ChuyMatt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Or, It is like one of those mirror telescopes, where it collects the radiation and focuses it at the general direction of the adapter.
- rovertly, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3No digg, because it's silly and gimmicky.
- ooMissioNoo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I can see myself walking down the street with a giant dumpling strainer on top of my head. As borat would say, "NOT!"
