- BitwiseMcgee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19do hipsters generally have appointments? or jobs for that matter?
- ike368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8does anyone use this?
- loqqq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Techies often laugh at these paper-based solutions, but I challenge anyone with a Palm/Windows Mobile/Blackberry to quickly look at 2 or 3 separate pieces of data at the same time.
For example, I want to look at a weekly and monthly view of my calendar along with a list of contact--both in front of me. It's just not intuitive with one PDA-sized screenful of information at a time.
I believe this is why PDAs frustrate people after a week or so.
Not to mention how much customers love to wait while you spend two clumsy minutes tippity-tapping away entering their business card info. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7people are only digging this up because of the submitter.
- ninjadave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Where are they going to put them in their skin tight women's jeans?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8GUYS I WRITE IN AN APPOINTMENT BOOK , BUT I LIKE TO CALL IT A HPDA!!!1
this ***** is ***** crap. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Long time ago I invested the "TP PDA"
You just write ***** on a stack of toilet paper squares.
Great Idea, and Highly portable... But no venture capitalists seemed interested.
So I stopped marketing it, and went on to invent the "Write on any hand - Pen" It is a special Pen that you can use to write on your hand.
Mainly a repainted Bic Pen, no one seemed interested in funding it either.
Then I realized that I shouldn't invent USELESS *****. - bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sure to impress the ladies
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you mean like flashcards?
- ambrosious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one who hates the word 'Hipster'?
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Please stop stealing content from Lifehacker.com. Every other front page post is either a Lifehacker tip or a "Top 10 Piece of Crap for Today".
- astra05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It wouldn't be a pda then, as PDA stands for personal digital assistant. Maybe PPA, Personal Paper Assistant deems more appropriate.
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yet i get dug down...
- ciaziraphale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another lame attempt by Luddites to trash progress. I love my PDA. It keeps my schedule, list of DVDs, CDs, and other things organized. I can look up tasks easily and I'm not late for appointments. If you don't do anything all day, you don't need one but it you want to lead a busy life and do lots of things, a PDA can really help.
- Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice link to your blog, metrophilly, but you seem to be filling the role of "token Digg member vehemently against what opposite-spectrum Digg members are vehemently for."
Absolutely NOTHING against the electronic PDA, but personally, I use my 3x5's to collect thoughts and notes throughout the day, only to express them where they need to go at a later convenient time. The thing doesn't rule my life —I haven't crafted my own leather cover with a gold foil #43 seal for it— but it helps me keep things in line with my Memento-Guy-Pearce brain. The cards aren't so crumpley as Post-Its! ;-)
The Digg comment system could certainly do without the fan vs antifan crossfire, don't you think? - heffae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with the entering business card data hence I use index cards to capture information but my palm to organize it later. I carry way to much information around with me to have it all on paper. Then again I am a data pack rat and like to have as much information as is practical on me at all times. If I could carry wikipedia, all of Microsoft TechNet, and the entire FreeBSD handbook in my palm I would.
In all seriousness I find that having to sit down and transcribed data from paper to the computer gives me a chance to actually process the data in my mind and mentally organize my thoughts. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yup, I used to print out my own "PDA." It had a to-do list, appointments, notes, shopping list, my contacts, and 3 month calendar. I've gone back to using a small spiral notepad but with the addition of 3x5 calendar pages and contacts printed out from iCal pasted in the back. That's something I learned from using a hipster pda. Advantages: cheap, easily replaceable, durable, portable, doesn't need electricity, etc.
- FederalSource, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Is an Apple a requirement of being a hipster?
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The real question becomes, "What's a greener solution?". I use my PDA for taking a lot of notes - ie: client design changes. I could easily see myself going through 50 cards a week. Yes, it's cheap - but aren't we supposed to be SAVING the trees?
- heffae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do though not to this level. I just carry a stack of blank index cards so I can jot down notes and todo's immediately then when I get back to my desk I enter them all in my Palm. I used to try and write everything down on the Palm en even though I am fast with graffiti. It doesn't even come close to speed you can write on paper especially when you take into account all the little short hand marks people tend to develop.
- bmonzing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm digging it up because of Merlin Mann.
http://www.thatphoneguy.com
He's a genius of media.
He should write a full-length feature film (not necessarily a Phone Guy film, but a film). - patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just realized Kevin submitted this. All his fanboys will be quick to bury our dissent.
- ike368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, i was just wondering if this were a real life phenomenon or just something bloggers like to talk about..
i myself carry around a little book for writing things down, but not really for organizational purposes... then again, i guess i dont have too much to organize
RadiantBeing: thanks for alerting me to the printing thing in ical, i'd never thought of that - jshapiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A guy at my office does. Java Programmer
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use it to. Judging from the number of diggs we're not the only ones either
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, I dare you to find your daily appointment quickly with the iPhone. Who needs it! Get index cards and draw your website on there instead, and pretend you are retrieving email.
- argblat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.pocketmod.com/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1exactly... i noted that above.
- saltatory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i use a stack of index cards are purely collection material so that i always have somewhere to write something down. it's saved many good (and bad) ideas from my constantly wandering mind. sometimes i'll make a list of things i want to accomplish for the day too. more flexible than most electronic PDAs that i've used.
- macphilly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, the post had been dugg a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't have time to search Digg to find that link - work keeps interfering...
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1seconded. All opposed?
Motion carried! This is a douchebag full or lame. - isuisorisuaint, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8dumbest.product.ever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1nice
- PhillipLitt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2These are really nice. They are low-key and carry only the information you need.
- macphilly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Give it up! Simply rubbish, and here are the 43 reasons why Merlin Mann should realize it.
http://metrohair.blogspot.com/2007/01/why-hipster-pda-is-rubbish.html - joerod, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2does hipster mean cheap? go buy an old school palm it will serve the same purpose.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2gay. buried as ***** lame.
