    Also I would probably use the shadow/highlight for most of this.

    Just duplicate your layer and play with the blend mode instead or try the shadow/highlight tool.

I had been looking for a solution to these issues, and found that many text postings put things in the wrong order, or referred to the right tool, but in the wrong pull down menu (We all make that mistake sometimes when explaining things). This made it very clear, and helped me with a very common problem.
