- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -20/+8Why would anyone want to sake a Mac? For that matter, why would anyone want to configure Ubuntu so that its appearance and behaviour mimics Apple's software? I'm asking, not ranting...
- samanathon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Because they can! That's the best part of the "Mod" mentality, you have to try something just to see if you can do it. You learn a few things and go and mod something else!
- VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why in the hell would anyone want to run Linux on anything that has a processor? Because they can!
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11sake? If you meant sacrifice; no macs were harmed in the making of this, though one mac lost its keyboard. But a Mac CRT that died has been resurected as a beta iMac :) The configuration was just to make it apple themed. My lady likes Macs but Im a linux nerd so I made this for her.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4It was a typo... "fake", not "sake"
My bad.. *smile* - marksy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@schestowitz
"Why would anyone want to sake [fake] a Mac?"
Just for fun, and to see what you can do with spare/cheap parts. Looking at the final pics of thet00lman's mod, is pretty impressive - that it WAS a crt monitor, but now its a LCD, with computer inside.
I agree that, if you really want a mac then buy a cheap one. But there's a satisfying feeling in rivaling such a powerful company/computer manufacturer, that you don't get when buying a mac.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4It was a typo... "fake", not "sake"
- karuberutsu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Macs are okay, but that thing is ugly as hell.
- Huevoos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like it, resembles an old iMac G3 like the one I'm writing this thing from.
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Ugly? I guess its slightly, er, fatter then the new iMac LCD eh? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess.
- twoby4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1thet00lman - Don't listen to that blather. It's just an opinion, but come on... That has to be one of the best looking Mac mods ever done! Looks so machine age with the exposed innards - a well arranged bouquet of hardware. The Mac C3 mod was cool, but this is really a work of art.
Keep on going - we want more! - LoopyChew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Dugg on account of silly-ass Darth-Vader-helmeting.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wow. gEex0rs!
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2i love these mods. all the aesthetics of a mac w/o the ***** inside. they make pretty fish tanks too :-D
- samste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9looks more like an eMac…
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe they were referring to the old imac design
- condormcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3u guys are freakin mean
any mod is a cool mod
even if its of a mac - FluxHarmonic, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1YOU AUSSIE FREAK.
IT'S PRONOUNCED OS TEN.
NOT OS EX.- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who's aussie?!
dude, get a new keyboard, looks like your Caps is stuck... or you have a screaming problem and like to get dugg down? - jues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Flux
Not sure if you were just having a little spazzy fit or not, but we called it OS-ex here in the UK as well... - mrTribal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He sounds like a Kiwi not an Aussie...
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who's aussie?!
- narula, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1where's the slot-loading optical drive?
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agonised over putting in a slot loader, but decided against it - for now. Too scared of cracking plastic when i cut. I just mount a drive over the network if I need it.
- agiorlando, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1You gutted the mac! :(
I never liked macs anyways, good find - GO UBUNTU!- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it was just an Apple monitor case, no computers were harmed for the mod
- mightme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is a very awesome mod. Keep up the good work! Also, I will take 12. ;)
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not sure what people are up in arms about. They took an Apple monitor that no longer worked and reused the plastic (way to green it up!) to make a Linux box. It's not running the Mac OS (FTR, I call it OS X too, sue me) and no Mac was sacrificed to make it. Hell, even if they HAD ripped up a Mac to make it, it's still a cool idea. Kudos for effort! Dugg up!
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I really hope he discharged that Display before he took it apart, he could have seriously hurt him self if the bleeder in the display was not working.
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bought the case pre-gutted of trademe( ebay style site in NZ - no Im not Australian thank you!) So the guy I bought it off was the potential zap-ee..I believe that the original CRT died. It was being sold as a hampster cage! Thankfully all the plastic was there, and no big scratches of cracks.
- rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At least it is not running Windows...
I remember the second time I installed MkLinux on a Macintosh. I was greeted with a Windows 95-like desktop running with fvwm95. It lasted a couple hours - until I got a NeXT-like desktop (AfterStep, IIRC). It took me a while to have everytihing I needed installed. - Niro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Nice project.... but why not just get the case from Ebay.. they pretty much have many of these old iMac's, i even saw some people using them as fish tanks.
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did get the case from Ebay! (Well actually trademe.co.nz, the NZ incumbent equivalent).
Its funny how Ebay is going the way of the verb, like photoshop and google...
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did get the case from Ebay! (Well actually trademe.co.nz, the NZ incumbent equivalent).
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I haven't looked at the pics yet, but is it butt ugly brown like Ubuntu is?
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Brown anymore; i tweaked Ubuntu to blue everywhere, even bootup. The YouTube videos at the bottom show the software powerup and desktop :) The build photos do show the poo-brown color scheme of the default install tho..
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm not a graphic designer (or a designer of anything I'm afraid) but seriously, why would they choose a brown color? If it was for ethnic reasons it's retarded. I'm all for diversity but honestly, brown for a WM is butt ugly.
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wonder if MS thought of this when designing the Zune... :)
- TJENN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking at the pictures and watching the babbling videos, I think this is one awesome mod. I have an old blueberry imac beside me and thought the mod was very creative and interesting.
- thet00lman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you, my videos were originally kinda for my own documentation, but I got coaxed into putting up a build page, and these show it off quite nicely :)
