It's really worth noting that this is all really a big hint that everyone should use DVI and not VGA - jpf., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great link! Thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1/me hugs his CRT.
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He does so much work to show the image as full screen. I do not have an LCD monitor so I am not going to bother, but wouldn't just pressing F11 in the windows image viewer work?
- jeebus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The nVidia drivers have an lcd auto adjustment thing too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmmm, it looks better. But it could just be psychological.
- DanGeech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mine: Looks exactly the same.
- jakbrud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didnt notice a difference, cant hurt though
- stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Auto-Adjust didn't do anything for me, but I dugg just for the ClearType hint. It looks so much better, thanks.
- marathon851, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't notice a difference after doing this
- freemdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this rules.
- das7282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Both of my LCD's are connected via DVI so I don't have auto adjust.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm. how can you do this on a laptop, the only thing that works is the cleartype thing[and yeah it does look better w/ that]. but what about the auto adjust?
- Gorbash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks a bit sharper. It didn't hurt any.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amazing. Ive never had my monitor clearer.
Ive been looking for something like this for the longest time and never found anything but i knew it was possible.
I love digg so much. - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no real difference for me (KDS 19" 16ms LCD), but I'm glad some folks are discovering the beauty of the ClearType tweak. Every LCD owner should have ClearType enabled!
- waazzuup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you
- c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I noticed an improvement on mine - before I hid the desktop icons, their labels were barely readable against the "special" background, but after auto-adjusting, the labels were clear as day. Color depth seems a bit better too. Good find!
- brian2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It actually worked! I have three 17" LCD's and it corrected the 3rd one that is connected to the VGA out. The other two that are on a DVI connection will not auto adjust. When I set the background image the 3rd screen immediately started to flicker. After I hit the auto button the flicker was gone.
- bvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good find.
- fartonmyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so what exactly goes on with the background?
- redsrule2500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I noticed a large difference on my samsung. I used to see little lines that would almost "fuzz" certain colors and regions, now it's gone!!!
Great find! - bad_vlad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Samsung 19inch lcd worked great THX
- slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:( i got5 CRT and 1 laptop LCD :( will it works?
- mardak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go go DVI
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have the picture on my desktop so I can do it again when it needs it. The clear type also made it much better, I can't believe I had that turned off before. Also I learned how to hide the desktop icons in windows it was worth the digg just for that.
- tibman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man that made a HUGE difference awesome digg, thanks.
- Deusiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ciphex this did not work with your DVI monitor (unless of course you were using the VGA input) otherwise if your using DVI the "auto tune" will have no effect as DVI does not need "tuning".
I did test this at work on an LG Flatron with quite good results. The text come across as much smoother however that's not a good thing in my opinion. I preferred the crisper look my screen had before and so switched back.
The results of this test are going to be dependent on your monitor with each model giving different results.
My overall opinion of this is that it's pretty much a waste of time for such as small visual change (call it an improvement if you will). - ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It worked for me running Tiger with one DVI monitor and one VGA utility monitor. I typically keep chat windows open on it... the type is clearer.
Even though OS X already does a great job of smoothing there is something to this picture. When i first applied it to the desktop the image seemed to "crawl" as the pixels seemed to not line up... or... something.. i dunno. But after the auto adjust on my NEC MultiSync oldass LCD 1530V... the crawling stopped and the background was crisp. After switching my desktop back and showing my applications i could tell an immediate difference. Still not as good as the Apple Studio Display.. but much better. Nice Digg!
Ci - lionwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This (seemingly) didn't do anything to my display, and I've had ClearType turned on since I've used XP. My LCD is getting a little rusty, though. I need to invest in a good 1280x1024 DVI LCD. Right now I'm stuck at 10x7. Ugh.
- gmattheis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A similar "trick" works on most Mac OS X systems as well, whether it be flat or CRT monitor. Go to your "displays" preference pane, click on the color tab and go through the calibration with the advanced features turned on, you'll see a difference right away when your colors are calibrated.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In very high resolutions, I think cleartype makes the fonts actually harder to read where you have to bump up the font size. But the fonts do look prettier.
In other news, I used his pattern on a high resolution CRT and then used the monitor's menu to cancel out the moire effect. - skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The ClearType setting is one of the first things I do on all new computers. I don't know why that is not enabled by default in new Windows installations. It just makes everything look so ridiculously better. I just bought a new Samsung LCD and the graphic tweak was interesting. Seems like most new LCDs come with a CD that contains a similar grey graphic/pattern for auto-adjusting.
- ChrisB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0F11 in Windows Image Viewer (to make the image fullscreen) didn't seem to work properly for me - there was a thin vertical line in the centre of the image. Best to do it the way the article says.
- braden.beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This worked great on my mom's LCD, which has been acting up ever since we got it. I never really had the desire to fix the thing for her, but when I saw this I thought I'd give it a shot, you don't have to set it as your background though, just do like asdfasdf said and hit f11 from the windows image previewer. Her screen looks perfect now, it's incredible.
- Viper2026, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will only do something if you're not using a digital monitor on a dvi port. Digital monitors need no adjusting.
- FuZoRBlade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0INCREDIBLE! I used this on my 17 inch dell and it worked perfectly...
- will-rom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing for me...
- salome191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i must be the exception, my 15 in. Dell got screwed up when i did it. i had fuzzy lines everwhere. o well.
- GameDNA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody have a link to why this actually works?
- Thorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that was great. Really makes the crappy LCD I have to use at work look a lot better.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0linkie no workie... :(
- jefflundberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got a dual monitor setup and tried it on the non-DVI connection and it actually did something... Before I clicked the button, the desktop appeared to be moving. Something with the sync, refresh rate, and the alternating black & white pixles. After running the auto-correct, it looks perfect! I have the older DELL 18.1" Ultrasharps.
- ddavis1972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey the link is gone what were the insturctions.
- hackhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0been using this trick for years... hahah not
- oneMadRssn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just tried it on my dell 17" monitor at work. it did something, things are different now. not sure if its better, or worse, or just different. oh well, hmm...i wonder if this monitor has DVI... *begins crawling under desk*
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seemed to help this HP monitor my dad uses somewhat... Worth a try just to see if it helps.
- dean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i can't tell any difference. but then again i usually have cleartype disabled. it looks horrid compared to the mac os and linux counterparts.
- dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You can't fool me. This is one of those psychological perception experiments where half the participants are stooges and attempt to convince the other half that black is white by all agreeing that the emporer is wearing a trendy green and pink shell suit, when in reality he's butt naked.
Nice try, but no goldfish.
